Hostel security guard arrested after American woman vanishes in Costa Rica: Police

"While FaceTiming with a friend around 7:20 p.m. that night, Stefaniak told him that she was thirsty, according to the timeline. When he suggested that she boil some water, she told him that all she could find was a skillet and said that she was going to ask one of the security guards to buy her a bottle of water, since it was raining, the family told WFTS. It is unclear if she had contact with one of the security guards."

RIP Carla.

I'm not surprised the guard has been arrested; he really managed to talk himself into trouble quickly with that 5am story. Aside from that, it's crazy that such an offhand comment ("I'm going to ask the guard for some water") pointed everyone straight in the right direction. Nice one Carla.
God, if she hadn’t said that, he may have gotten away with it!

Bismarck Espinoza Martinez Identified as Suspect in Carla Stefaniak Case | Heavy.com
Martinez is 32 years old, authorities say. He was taken into custody late Monday evening after investigators said he was providing conflicting statements about his story and that his story in question didn’t match up with security footage.

On Monday, the remains of a female body found about 200 feet from Stefaniak’s AirBnb rental was confirmed to likely be the body of Stefaniak, herself, by Espinoza. Chief Espinoza said that the body had stab wounds in the neck and other parts of her body, and that her injuries were “consistent with being hit in the head.” He maintained that the body still needed to be fingerprinted before they made an official announcement.

Costa Rican authorities find blood in Airbnb where Florida woman vanished | Daily Mail Online
Law enforcement officials in Costa Rica arrested a security guard Tuesday in connection to the murder of a Miami woman whose body was found outside the Airbnb she rented out.

Bismark Espinosa Martinez, 32, is currently the sole suspect in the killing of Carla Stefaniak, 36, who was not seen or heard from since last Tuesday.

Director of the country's Judicial Investigation Department, Walter Espinoza, said the cause of death is head trauma.

The director added that the suspect, who was staying in the vacation rental room next to Stefaniak, gave contradictory statements during questioning.

Very true but how did the coroner id the body if they haven't gotten the dental records yet nor has anyone from the family provided a dna sample? (per family's statement posted above)

Maybe the guy confessed to killing her, and that’s how they know it’s Carla

He likely committed the murder at/after 9pm when her phone went out. He had about 9 hours time until the other guard would arrive at 6 am for his daytime shift.

There was no power. It was raining.

He stabbed her in the neck. Did she scream? Did someone hear something? Or was the rain muffling all sound?

The stab wounds on the arms were likely defensive wounds. There must have been a lot of blood from the neck wounds, unless they were superficial and he killed her by hitting her in the head with something. But there was blood in the room, we know that already.

He had 9 hours, probably a bit less, to clean and straighten up the room, and clean himself, wrap the body in plastic bags and carry it behind the property. Bury it. Pack her belongings, hide them. Where?

Maybe someone heard him moving around, getting plastic bags, cleaning supplies, dragging her body out.

How long was the power out? Did it suddenly come back and someone saw him?

Where is her luggage? Where is the knife and the other weapon he used to hit her with? Likely something from the room that he grabbed while they struggled. He probably came only with the knife.

Poor Carla. How frightened she must have been.

I have so many questions ...

All MOO

Catching up.

I agree he likely killed her right about the time her phone went silent to others. Her family and friends said she was always contacting them all the time via her phone and she went silent that night before the morning she was going to leave.

It seems pretty obvious the security guard who brought her the water is the main suspect here. Plus he was the one who claimed she left around 5am and changed his 5am Uber story to a 5 am Taxi when he probably realized his Uber story could be invalidated. So he was already changing his story about how she left at 5am. There was no record of her contacting anyone else for a ride and she had a ride ready at 8:30am and that Uber driver came for her and she was nowhere to be found. The new security guard got the story from the guard who told him the 5am BS.

This is all too easy to figure out what happened and I just hope there are not more victims back in those woods. CR investigators better tear those woods apart back there because it would not surprise me if he had a couple more victims back there.

This is horrible and its a tourists worst nightmare come true. From the looks of the pictures of the place that investigators released it looks like they should be able to find more blood evidence as I doubt he was able to clean every speck of blood since this sounds like a terribly violent awful crime.

You can bet money that he went there with sexual assault on his mind. Murdering her may or may not have been planned. But since she most likely resisted him, game over. All jmo

I'd even be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that he went there with consensual sex on his mind, but then became enraged when he was rebuffed and then it turned to sexual assault (probably, in my opinion).

It's unfortunate that some facts are being skewed by the reporting since poor Carla was found.

example : "The Stefaniak family said they spoke to the Uber driver, Airbnb host and security guards who all say they saw Carla leaving the Airbnb with her luggage around 5am and getting into an unknown car." (Daily Mail)

The Uber driver, airbnb host and the second security guard did NOT see Carla leaving at 5 am in an unknown car.
The fact is that the first overnight guard Martinez SAID he saw Carla leaving, and told the morning guard so. The host and Uber driver were TOLD Carla left at 5 am.

Such reporting can result in the perception that all these people lied and were therefore in cahoots.
It's not correct and throws a bad light on the host, Uber driver, and second guard...and such false info could result in some unfair consequences for those who had nothing to do with Carla's disappearance and murder.

The first guard Martinez is the suspect, the liar, and the alleged killer.

On FB Finding Carla:
One relative, David Alastre, who is there in CR, stated a few minutes ago that the family doesn't believe it is Carla.

Wow, the body was fou

Perhaps she did leave the compound at 5:00 am, but not by choice. Sometimes suspects tell lies that are cloaked in truths.
