PNJ is still running the replay if anyone missed it before - not sure how long they will replay this though:

http://pnj.com/article/20090717/NEWS01/90717018/4-p.m.-news-conference

Morgan didn't really say anything we didn't know already - he said they decided to call a presser to address the contents of the safe. He basically said:

- they knew the contents of the safe from the inception
- he stressed that the reason that they did not tell the public the contents was to protect the prosecution of the case
- they have yet to determine if the safe was opened by the perps
- he said the safe has an electronic mechism - it's still being processed by the crime lab
- he called this level of the investigation like "master level chess"
- a delicate process in which they don't want to jeopardize the prosecution of those in custody

A reporter asked about other motives - he would not address that.

Something to what? Don't mean to be dense here but can you elaborate?

CS may have tried to pawn or sell stolen property from the Billings' robbery? LE won't confirm or deny other items were stolen other than the safe.

A reporter also asked if there was another safe and the Sheriff said he could not answer that.

I wonder if anyone caught Rick's Blog Post yesterday about the press conference notes? Have a look and also look to the comments below at

"Maybe, Rick, But...."

His repeated statement that “it is what it is,” coupled with his defensive posture and frustrated tone (which he has not displayed before), lead me to suspect he was more likely responding to the fact that the Feds have now subsumed the ECSO in the investigative process, leaving local law enforcement to tie up “loose ends” and such on the terrible crime of murder.

My opinion is that this presser was called to defend the LE's decision to withhold the contents of the safe. He said there was some speculation that could have been hurtful to certain people.

He said there was a lot of hoopla and speculation about the contents of the safe. He said he didn't care if the safe contained beanie babies or bubble gum... it was the object that was material to this case - it removed from the home of the crime and that's why they wouldn't reveal the contents.

He seemed to be stressing their need to hold back certain pieces of information.

Here's my take on both pressers from today:

- the LE would not reveal the contents of the safe which caused major suspicion aka "hoopla"
- the family was hurt by the "hoopla," so they wanted to rush to defend the family against the "hoopla" and tell everyone what was inside
- it made the LE look like they were hiding that info because it might make the Billings look bad, but that wasn't the reason
- LE needed to defend their position, particularly due to the Sunshine Law in FL

Could be wrong. But that's how I see it.

This charge could be DS's father. Arson, notice the home town=Brewton (Escambia Co Alabama, where DS was arrested).
http://www.escambiaclerk.com/xml/xml.asp?ucase_id=13006900

Remember PL had arson investigation on one of her Georgia properties (previous post).

Geesh, getting tricky, we have to look up all 3 surrounding counties (Escambia FL, Okaloosa and Santa Rosa). Has anyone found online court records from Escambia AL?

I agree, it is a little tricky.. In our county, we can look up all transaction on one property by utilizing the Legal Description. I have not been able to find this search function of these sites. Anyone know if this kind of search can be done?
:banghead:

One more thing...

A reporter asked if there was another safe in the home... Morgan would not address that.

That opens up a whole new possibility... did the perps get the WRONG safe?? I would not put it past this crew. Just imagining that makes these animals look like the biggest buffoons in the universe.

OT: Morgan seemed very tense during this presser. He looked extremely tired with bags the size of luggage under his eyes. I assume they've been working a lot of long hours on this.

Yes, I certainly did, and I am now going to go modify or remove my post that used the word 'arrest.'

Dang, I am going back to lurk mode, and throwing my junior sleuther badge under the bed.

Sorry for confusion, all on me. :behindbar

It's all these danged initials! :behindbar

Don't you dare go back to lurking.

The local news said that LPG Jr's wife, Tabitha, is wanted for questioning - but apparently she left her residence with the kids and has not been located in about a week. LE can't find her.

IIRC, yes, at least one of the three counties had that function and I used it, but the other two did not appear to... so I guess it's a crap shoot depending on which one the property is in.

Having the tax id or legal description for the property opens up other ways to search...

And finally, just one other semi-related tip, if you go to one of the GIS ( the "g" is "geographical" not "Google") server map sites to a property, you can find info on any adjacent property or across the street, nearby, etc, just by 'pointing and shooting' with your mouse to select a place of interest, then that can take you back to the detailed record information - owner, legal description, tax id, etc.

I told my Mom yesterday that the Sheriff, after all this is wrapped up, should take PLW boat out and go fishing for a couple of days. He's earned it.

Thanks. My concern was that people were confusing the person who reported the crime (AS) with her (CS).

I am now hoping whoever was supposed to turn off the security system comes forward. They will be found out so they may as well come in now.

Please don't go back to lurk mode, the more sleuths on the case the better! :)

There are tons of players involved in this case, its easy enough for anyone to get confused.

No don't leave!!!:)
Besides those sleuther badges are in short supply,LOL

I agree.

To anybody who's still confused about what happened:

There's an AS (NOT the AS who reported the crime.) that has been looked at in relation to CS. So the mistake was completely understandable and and it was fixed right away. But the thread was going so fast that the two AS women were confused for a page or two when the name became initialized.

Spencer = Reported the crime
Simmons = somehow related to someone with the initials of CS -- not sure about that part of the investigation.

They can ask as long as they do not use coercion .... he much apply his rights to remain silent on a question by question basis. :)

Case Law - Miranda v Arizona

If the individual indicates in any manner, at any time prior to or during questioning, that he wishes to remain silent, the interrogation must cease ... If the individual states that he wants an attorney, the interrogation must cease until an attorney is present. At that time, the individual must have an opportunity to confer with the attorney and to have him present during any subsequent questioning

"Have you change your mind" "Do you want to talk to us now" those are all questions

If anyone has a link or runs across a link for streaming video of the last press conference, please post it.

The PNJ.com video freezes at about 8 minutes with 4 minutes left.

Local news on WEAR TV 3, interview with Sheriff says they are wanting to speak with Tabitha, wife of LPG Jr, via information from neighbors she and her kids have been gone for about a week.
