A man who is accused of brutally beating a family member and her two young children with a baseball bat in Bridgeport on Wednesday morning appeared in court on Thursday and his bond has been set at $10 million.

One of the victims, a 6-year-old boy, is in critical condition, according to police.

The little boy’s 33-year-old mother and 4-year-old brother have been upgraded from critical to stable condition.

Sorry but single moms need to be so careful these days who they let into their homes; not undermining that this surviving mother is a victim.

Some of the articles indicate that he was imbibing while inside the residence - this seems like an unfortunate case where, either due to lack of support or inability or misplaced attachment, the mother was not able to get away from this abuser.

It's shocking that the PO was ordered just over 2 weeks before this; although we know statistically, that would also be one of the most dangerous times to be near this man.

This poor mother will regret whatever judgement she made that led to the loss of dear Jathan for the rest of her life, not to mention the trauma she and the surviving 4yo will carry. Moo but having read some of the things he had already put her through, she has my deepest sympathies. It's really hard to know in the moment whether Choice A or B is more likely to lead to a violent, deranged, drug-addled abuser to attack you. Do you let them in and hope they calm down, or do you hope every time you exit your front door, they aren't there to "teach you a lesson"?

I 1000% understand the sentiment that women and single moms need to be cautious, especially for the sake of children. But the only person who bears fault for this tragedy is rightfully behind bars. omo

I hope this guys defense isn’t going to be some variation on the ‘insanity’ plea. Especially in light of all these attempts at arraignment and him going loco on police. His defense will try to whip out the old ‘insanity’ plea. Also I hope the mother don’t start the ‘He is a really good guy when he’s not on drugs’ stuff either. I am a firm believer that drugs just exacerbates the conditions people already have. So if you are evil in your heart then the drugs just brings that out more. As for ‘Angel Dust’ I’m sure the defense will have reams and reams of studies that say it makes you psychotic. This guy needs to be in prison forever and/or the DP. If he gets off on insanity plea he will be out in a year or less. I read a story the other day about a guy that had gotten off on the insanity plea and sent to an institution and was back out on the streets and killed again within a year. So it happens all the time.

I still have questions.

My point was that did the mother know what he was capable of, and tried to think it would work out better next time ?
Jathan didn't get a 'next time'.

It sounds like there was a restraining order in place, so I'm wondering if he broke into their home (in which case she has my total sympathy & also she needs to show LE that there was a breaking and entering -- e.g., broken lock, shattered window, etc.) or did she allow him in when he was fairly sober; in which case I am sorry mainly for the two little kids, since they're helpless !

Imo, a parent or caregiver is the first line of defense for innocent children.

There are domestic violence support safe houses out there, and a mother can take their kids and flee, sometimes the safe house employees will pick them up.
My coworker worked at a DV rescue facility, and the saddest part is that sometimes a woman with her babies or small children will actually call the abusive partner and have them come and get her; even after the employees have put themselves at risk to rescue her in the first place !
Sometimes even the violent 'familiar' is preferred to the unknown.
