SPRINGFIELD, Ill. National spotlight on Casey Anthony's murder trial in Florida may not have led to a conviction last summer, but it has inspired potential legislation in both Illinois and Missouri regarding parental responsibilities.
After Anthony reportedly waited 31 days to tell authorities her 2-year old daughter, Caylee Anthony, was missing, lawmakers around the country began to craft legislation that would put a deadline on how long parents have to report a missing child.
Illinois and Missouri joined states including Florida, New York, Oklahoma and West Virginia in pushing legislation that would result in criminal charges if parents did not report missing children within a 24-hour deadline.
ORLANDO, Fla.
Two Occupy Orlando members were arrested outside the Orange County Courthouse on Friday after security officers told them they were on private property.
The arrests came in the morning hours, but the occupiers told WDBO they were in one of the two free speech boxes drawn up during the Casey Anthony trial.
The group continued standing in line Friday, waiting for the closing arguments in Orlandos first OccuTrial to begin at 9:30 a.m.
Dr. Pollanen, Ontarios chief forensic pathologist, ruled the cause of death was positional asphyxia, caused by pressure placed on the teens chest after he was taken or fell to the ground during the arrest, according to an SIU news release. The officers were cleared of criminal wrongdoing.
On Monday, police lawyer Gary Clewley says U.S. pathologist Dr. Werner Spitz, who recently testified for the defence at the Casey Anthony trial, will propose an alternative theory based on summaries of eye witnesses and police testimony, as well as EMS reports. Its not clear when hell testify.
Youre likely to hear more about the video through the day. So take that as a warning.
Republican Rep. Michelle Ugenti (you-gen-tee) of Scottsdale sponsored the bill, which would make it a felony punishable by a presumptive sentence of 1 1/2 years if a parent to fails to report that a child under age six has been missing for 24 hours.
More than a dozen other states have considered similar legislation after Casey Anthony didnt report 2-year-old Caylee Anthony missing for about a month. The mother was acquitted of murder in the daughters death.
Attorneys for EquuSearch founder Tim Miller have asked the court to appoint a special master for his deposition.
Miller attorney Marc Wites is also asking for a protective order staying the deposition until the special master is appointed.
Each side will have to pay 50 percent of the special master's costs.
While Miller may be deposed and questioned as an individual, Casey Anthony so far has managed to largely avoid most questions at deposition while she challenges her criminal convictions for lying to law enforcement. That appeal protects her from saying anything self incriminating.
One of the main concerns was that Anthony never notified law enforcement that her daughter was missing. Because of the sudden retort over this fact, the Maryland General Assembly has recognized the need for legislation that requires a parent or guardian to report to law enforcement, after a specific period of time, that the child is missing.
http://mlis.state.md.us/2012rs/filecode/E1.htmIt is unfortunate that this legislation has to form out of a reactionary circumstance, but the need has appeared none-the-less. The public’s attention has been captured, and a new law needs to be created in response. “Caylee’s law” has already been considered in other states, and Maryland should not wait any longer to follow this trend.
Profit Concerns from the Casey Anthony Trial
In addition to criminal concerns, some legislators are considering measures to prohibit participants in a criminal trial from profiting from their experience. Florida HB 51 (2012), for example, to be considered in 2012, would prohibit a juror from requesting or accepting any benefit or compensation related jury service until 270 days after the end of the trial. Similar laws already exist in California, Delaware, Louisiana, New York and New Jersey.

"I'm just really starting to feel good about a lot of things. It's about time," she reportedly said in the two-minute recording. "I'm really starting to like the way things are going and where they're going. I'm just happy. I'm really happy."
Casey Anthony's legal team has filed a formal objection to the request by attorneys for Zenaida Gonzalez to produce the "audio recordings" mentioned in Anthony's video diary.
WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said these videos are her way of gaining acceptance.
“I believe this is her attempt to do what she thinks is necessary in order to get back into society,” Sheaffer said.
He said it won’t be easy for her to fit back in.
“I think that she’s going to be a social leper for the rest of her life,” he said.
In the video Casey said she’s “really starting to feel good about a lot of things” and she is “really starting to like the way things are going and where they’re going
