Do you feel you are safe? Do you think that this case is bound to drop into the cold case files for future sleuthers to ponder over, never to determine who killed Janet? Do you feel that is a good thing? A good thing for Kaiden to grow up, not trusting people, cause he will know that his mother's murder was never solved, that someone out there killed his mother and it might be someone he associates with? Is that fair to Kaiden?
Just think, all the evidence has been kept and stored for future reference. Everyday they come up with new forensic techniques to study that evidence. There is no statue of limitations on murder.
Someday, someone may pull out the dusty files and then say- of course I can prove who committed the murder. When that day comes what will you be doing? Maybe it will be your wedding day. Or Kaiden's wedding day. The day you have another child, or Kaiden has his first child. How would you explain to a wife, through the visitation window, what happened that night? How will you excuse what you did? Do you anticipate the fear and condemation you might see there?
By now you realize you can never really relax. You have to stay alert, being careful that you don't let something slip. Do you ever feel as though if you were to get drunk, that you might actually confess? It's a heavy burden isn't it? You try to move forward with your life, yet have to keep looking back over your shoulder. Always in fear that somehow, they will get the proof they need. How will they do it? Will it be a new forensic technique? A witness who observes something you said or did? A piece of evidence that had been previously missed? Scary isn't it?
Memories can be so comforting, or so terrible. When you close your eyes, what do you see? The way she could smile, or the look in her eyes that night? The look in her eyes when she was happy, or the way the wound looked?
So you keep yourself busy, that way you won't have to think. But every time something good happens in your life- you will be looking to see if they are coming for you today. H*ll of a way to live isn't it?
