DNA Solves Cold Cases/Parabon Nanolabs & GED/Match.

Here is a recent article from the New York Times:

Genealogy Sites Have Helped Identify Suspects. Now They’ve Helped Convict One.

This may sound a little been contradictory but I can only be honest. I have spent years trying to get answers for victims relatively in cold cases to put it bluntly before they die. In my opinion the defence team did not do a good enough job for this man in this case and the science behind DNA genealogy needs to be directly challenged. In my opinion this mans legal team failed in their duty to present a robust defence for their client. It is my opinion they failed their client and did not do a good enough job. If any lawyers from genealogy cases read this board I would urge them to read this post. It needs to be a robust defence attacking the science behind DNA genealogy which I believe is flawed and the FBI know this and the lawyers in cases like the Alabama one need to be praised for doing a good job for client. This is my opinion:

Mr. Talbott’s lawyers said they viewed genetic genealogy as just another way of generating investigative leads. “Police have always used a variety of things to develop tips,” said Rachel Forde, a public defender, in an interview. The brother of one of the victims had even consulted a psychic at one point, she said.

Here are details of rape cases which have been solved using DNA genealogy. Sacramento LE have also of course used DNA genealogy to identify suspects in the Golden State Killer and NorCal Rapist cases:

'John Doe DNA' from 1992 matched to California rape suspect

Here is a quote from the article:

Schubert called the use of investigative genetic genealogy "the latest and perhaps the greatest advancement to help law enforcement find the truth and solve violent crime," adding later that "the tools are there. We're going to use them."

Here is another article about this case and I am pleased that his lawyers are now taking his case up as an innocent man. As I say I am a supporter of LE and the police but I want to see the right offender caught and the right people pay for crimes. Others may think Mr Talbott is guilty but I do not and this is my opinion based on your first amendment as we near the 4th of July and also based on the fact I believe the suspect in the Golden State Killer case is also not the actual offender:

Relatives’ DNA in geneology database leads to murder conviction

Here is part of the article:

Forde did, however, tell CNET that the jury made a mistake by focusing on the DNA evidence, and that Talbott plans to appeal the conviction. From her emailed statement:

Every American should now be concerned that the mere presence of their DNA at a crime scene could now lead to a conviction for a crime they didn’t commit.

I believe the science in the DNA genealogy is flawed so the DNA of individuals is not actually at the crime scene although it is presented in this way by LE who again in my opinion do not understand the DNA genetic genealogy they are hastily using. As I have said I am very sorry for the victims relatives in this cases and others and I to would like them to get answers.

Isn't it Great that they are solving all these cold cases with DNA genetic genealogy! I find it amazing!

I really don't know "why" you are against this type of DNA findings? I mean - they put the DNA in - get a family tree - Ms. Moore does a chart - they get DNA from a suspect - and if it matches DNA at the crime scene.... well who else could it be??

I know. I see genetic genealogy as being like any other tip or lead. Some tips don’t work out. So what? The actual direct DNA comparison is tried-and-true—accepted forensic science for close to 30 years.

This guy has been living in my area hiding out.....until now.
Deltona man indicted in North Carolina cold case sexual assault

The link does not work for me, but I found another source that reports this:
COLD CASE BREAKTHROUGH: Testing of rape kit leads to DNA match, arrest in 1996 sexual assault

Soller's arrest was made possible through a DNA match after a statewide push by Stein to process backlogged rape kits.

"We know that DNA can breathe new life into cold cases," Stein said.

This rape kit was submitted for testing in October, and the results came back three weeks ago.

Police were able to find a DNA match because Soller had been arrested for assaulting a police officer in Florida.

No 'new' DNA methods were used like Parabon Nanolabs, but glad this person is off the street. And there will be more to come since they are testing backlogged rape kits. High time!

Here is a recent video about the Washington case where a man was convicted through the use of genetic genealogy:

First, I very very strongly agree that the use of DNA in a number of different ways is an extremely valuable tool for law enforcement. I support its use wholeheartedly, when properly overseen and verified. But by itself, DNA technology isn't a "miracle cure," as this shows:

https://www.newsobserver.com/news/special-reports/article10365422.htm

By the way, the attorney general of North Carolina in that particular link has been replaced by Josh Stein, mentioned in the link about the Soller arrest. This is just my opinion and I hope it's not out of line here, but everybody I know agrees with me that Stein has been a Lone Ranger style hero--he's really improved the DA system. IMHO only. Sorry if that's over the line.
