I have seen this article or headline of it over the internet but here is an interesting BBC report which mentions the arrest in the Golden State Killer case:

I gave my DNA away. Can I get it back?

Here is part of the article:

In April last year, it was revealed that US police uploaded DNA they suspected of belonging to a man thought to have committed multiple rapes, murders and burglaries across California, to GEDMatch, a free online database where anyone can share their genetic code in order to search for relatives who have also submitted theirs.

From this, police were able to create a complex family tree with the details of around 1,000 people, which led eventually to the third and fourth cousins of Joseph James DeAngelo, who was arrested and charged with the crimes.

None of those whose data was compiled had given prior consent for their data to be used in a murder enquiry.

Here is a report about DNA Databases in relation to China that mentions the Golden State Killer case. Anne-Marie Schubert in some statements has suggested that governments should be involved in the regulation of investigative genetic genealogy as its use is likely to spread throughout the world as more and more criminals are identified through its use:

Here is an article about DNA testing in Washington State. Of course it has to be a very good thing that more DNA kits get tested:

Here is part of the article:

“Victims come forward to hold their assailant accountable, but also to prevent and solve future crimes. DNA evidence has led to the capture of the Golden State Killer and helped solve a double murder in Snohomish County, so I can only guess what cold cases these soon-to-be uploaded DNA samples might help uncover,” Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes said.

The identifications over at DNA Doe Project are on a roll at the moment!:

1. The Jane Doe formerly known as Orange Socks has been identified as Debra Jackson.

Texas police identify 'Orange Socks' woman dead for 40 years as Abilene woman
An Abilene woman has been identified, using DNA testing, as the murder victim "Orange Socks," whose body was found 40 years ago dumped in a concrete culvert along Interstate 35 near Georgetown.

The Williamson County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday the victim was 23-year-old Debra Jackson. Her body was found Oct. 31, 1979, and an autopsy showed the death was due to manual strangulation.

At the time the body was found, the case was called Orange Socks because that was the only clothing on her body.

“She was not reported missing by the family as she had left home in the past and was believed that she just had not returned home,” said Sheriff Robert Chody (CHOH'-dee) during a news conference.

Authorities haven't identified a suspect in Jackson's death.

2. The Jane Doe formerly known as Philadelphia Jane Doe or Kensington Jane Doe.

Pending confirmation from LE. Her case is still being investigated, but the DDP has confirmed a positive identification.

Swedish LE has enlisted the services of Parabon Nanolabs to solve the 2005 murder of Marie Johansson.

Translated from link:

"- We have nothing to lose on this, says criminal commissioner Peter Thylén and continues:

- We saw that this company in the US can create a phantom image on a DNA and as they write they have a number of solved murders that they think they have helped with in the USA.

(...)

Peter Thylén says that they are the first in Sweden to get help with this technology. It has cost $ 4,000.

- If you think about preliminary investigation costs, this is nothing. For example, if you see what we have to pay to the telephone companies to retrieve telephone/mobile data, it is a very low cost."

Once again, Swedish LE has enlisted the services of Parabon Nanolabs, this time to solve a presumed filicide.

Translated from the link:

"One winter day 2002, a deceased infant was found outdoors in a pedestrian tunnel in Kungsängen, north of Stockholm. Investigators are now hoping for public help by publishing a phantom image of a suspect.

"With the help of the DNA found at the crime scene, we have been able to produce a phantom image of what the woman, who is suspected of having committed the crime, looked like at 25. It is important to emphasize that the method used to create the image is about probabilities and assumptions, which means that it must not be perceived as an actual photograph of the suspected perpetrator", says Mats Pettersson, head of the investigation of the Cold case task force at the Stockholm region police force."

Here is an article about the use of genetic genealogy in Michigan:

Forward Focus: Troopers use new DNA technology to reopen cold cases

Here is part of the article:

He said having a new option with genealogy testing opens new possibilities when looking for suspects.

"Do we submit it to a lab that is gonna consume the entire sample looking for one suspect profile hoping that our suspect has been locked up and has a criminal conviction and his or her DNA profile is on file, or do we submit it to a genealogy website where we can reach a broader spectrum of individuals and hopefully get it pointed in a direction of our suspect if a family member has uploaded their DNA to it," Criger said.

"This is going to be a game changer for us," he said.

Here is a recent interview with Billy Jensen where he talks about investigative genetic genealogy and the OPT IN to GEDMATCH campaign to identify offenders in the same way the suspect in the Golden State Killer case was identified:

Chase Darkness with Me by Billy Jensen - Interview | BookPage

Here is part of the interview:

Thousands! Thousands of crimes. And it’s not really 23 and Me and Ancestry.com though. Let me clarify: You cannot use those two databases. They’re private. But what we’re asking people to do is take the information 23 and Me and Ancestry.com send back to you and enter it into public databases like GEDmatch.com, which is how the Golden State Killer was caught. Since the Golden State Killer was caught using this technology, over 50 murders have been solved using this same technology. The more people that enter their information into these databases, the more crimes we’ll solve. Now it’s just a matter of getting the police departments to do it and follow that trail—as well as follow that trail for all cold cases. What I would love to do is create a team that just goes to every police department and collects the DNA they have and then enters that information into these public databases. That would enable them to put that information into the hands of amateur genealogists, who could create a list of suspects, which they could then hand over to police departments. The answers are all out there—not just murders but sexual assaults as well.

Police: Serial rapist caught through DNA match to brother

Williams said Brandon Deangelo Young, 34, was connected to the sexual assaults after DNA taken from several victims' rape kits came back as a familial match to someone in the offender DNA database.

That familial match was to Young's brother. Williams said the DNA hit led them to identify Young as a person of interest in the case.

ETA @Niner (creator of this thread) I just realized the title of this thread was for parabon and nanolabs and gedmatch. Not sure that this is the appropriate place to put this.

But I don't see another place that has a thread for genealogical DNA matches. If anybody has one, let me know of the link to the proper thread in this type of case as possibly I don't think this type was the intention of Niner?

I thought of this thread because of the middle name of the perpetrator was DeAngelo.

Update: NorCal Rapist suspect arrested. He’s a 58-year-old safety specialist at UC Berkeley

September 21, 2018 10:06 AM
Five months after an arrest in the East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer case, authorities in Sacramento announced the arrest of another serial rape suspect Friday morning: the so-called NorCal Rapist, who terrorized victims over a 15-year period beginning in 1991.

Roy Charles Waller, 58, a UC Berkeley safety specialist who lives in Benicia with his wife, was arrested Thursday by Sacramento police as he arrived at the job where had worked for the past 25 years, Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert and Police Chief Daniel Hahn announced Friday at a press conference at the DA’s crime lab.
[.....]
Schubert said Waller was found after investigators in her office entered DNA from the NorCal Rapist crime scenes into a “genetic genealogy” website called GEDmatch – the same site used to find DeAngelo.
[.....]
Detectives have said previously that the rapist may have been seen on surveillance videos when he forced victims to drive to ATM machines and withdraw cash, and that he had attacked at least 11 women through 2006.
[.....]
Waller is scheduled to be arraigned Monday, 9/24 in Sacramento Superior Court. He is being held on 12 counts of forcible sexual assault with enhancements, according to Schubert. Those charges stem from an Oct. 13, 2006, assault on two women inside a North Natomas home, the last attack in the series.

a lot more in article.

ETA: Noticing @Niner started both threads lol. It’s probably already here... :)

You can post any kind of DNA match type cold cases on here. Not just the Parabon, etc. stuff. :)
