Some Ebola experts question assurances with much unknown about strain

Dr. Philip K. Russell, a virologist who oversaw Ebola research while heading the Army's Medical Research and Development Command, said much remains to be learned. “Being dogmatic is, I think, ill-advised, because there are too many unknowns here.”
If Ebola were to mutate on its path from human to human, said Russell and other scientists, its virulence might wane — or it might spread in ways not observed during past outbreaks, which were stopped after transmission among two to three people, before the virus had a greater chance to evolve. The present outbreak in West Africa has killed about 3,400 people.
“I see the reasons to dampen down public fears,” Russell said. “But scientifically, we're in the middle of the first experiment of multiple, serial passages of Ebola virus in man. ... God knows what this virus is going to look like. I don't.”

Thank you for sharing the link to the petition. Just signed it. I hope that poor dog is allowed to live and be quarantined. :(

I think they are concerned that dogs might be carriers without developing symptoms. Maybe they at least could test the dog to see if this dog actually has the virus.

Agreed! How can they blanketly state that they were neither ill nor infectious. Duncan was living in that apartment when he actively came down with symptoms- he sweated, had diarrhea, and vomiting. Ebola can live on surfaces for up to 6 days! I see the judge's actions as irresponsible too. He's not calming fears, he's helping spread fear.

I agree. Judge is so worried about Duncan's family being shunned. How about worrying about not spreading the deadly disease instead? New studies show some people might have the virus but not show symptoms. So their insistent claims that only those with symptoms are infectious would appear to be WRONG!

Javier Romero has ceded ownership of Excalibur to a local vet/radio personality in an effort to save his life.

Last night the pet dog at the centre of a growing Ebola row in Spain took a new twist as it emerged its owner had ceded possession to an animal welfare group which is now trying to save it.
Health chiefs in Madrid obtained a court order to sacrifice Excalibur and sent police to the home..
They were understood to be planning to gain entry to the property in the Madrid suburb of Alcorcon last night so they could take it away and put it down.
But a lawyer working for Madrid-based animal welfare group Mascoteros Solidarios rushed to the couple's flat to try to prevent the animal sacrifice.
The move came after Javier, who has been quarantined in a Madrid hospital with his wife, handed his pet dog over to the organisation's president Carlos Rodriguez, a vet and well-known radio presenter in Spain.
The association confirmed in a press release tonight: 'Teresa Romero's husband Javier, has ceded the custody of his dog to Carlos Rodriguez through a WhatsApp message while he is in Carlos III Hospital in Madrid.

Mascoteros Solidarios spokesman Beatriz Ramos said: 'We're not suggesting doing anything that endangers public health.
'All we want is for the authorities to consider the option of treating this animal like a human being and putting it into quarantine.
'This dog has been interacting with other animals over the past few days who in turn will have have been interacting with their owners.
'It's something that needs to be studied and we don't believe that just putting the animal down is the answer.'

Madrid health chiefs said the animal was a health risk and could transmit the Ebola virus to humans.
.. 'The only way of eliminating the existing risk of the transmission of the illness is by putting the animal which has been in contact with the virus to sleep.'

'If this problem worries them so much I think they should look for another type of alternative solution, such as putting the dog in quarantine and observation like they've done with me. Or perhaps they feel they should sacrifice me just in case. Of course a dog is easier, it doesn't matter as much.'

Just quarantine the dog for a month...sheesh

Dogs could be carriers without every developing symptoms.
So quarantine is not going to accomplish much.
They need to test this dog to see if it has the virus.

This just makes me angry.
Spain brought in two patients with Ebola. Patients died anyway, and now they got Ebola possibly spreading around. And an innocent dog might have to die.
These patients should have been treated in place.

Very wise.......and that is exactly what I thought as well, they do not know that dogs aren't carriers.....I think it is very irresponsible NOT to quarantine the dog and then test it, and very very soon....

You are most welcome! And Thank You for caring! :)

I agree with you. I hope as well that the dog "Excalubur" will be spared. There is as well a twitter hashtag #SalvemosaExcalibur where many people comment and care.

I found that info on the Spanish online newspaper (someone posted it here) and run it through Google translation. Here is the link again if someone is interested:

It was irresponsible to bring Ebola patients into countries that didn't have Ebola.
We all knew what could happen (and did).
By the way Duncan is not in one of the four special Ebola prepared hospitals. So who knows what is being spread around in Dallas. They might not be as equipped as the hospitals where the other patients were brought in.

Exactly, we now know for a fact that Duncan had Ebola when he flew, he just didn't develop a temp. yet.

Yeah, noone has reported anything on the markets Louise and her family may have initially gone to for food when they were initially told they could go out and not be quarantined. I'd like to know where they went and what precautions were taken at those places to disinfect.

Touching the microscope? What is it.. I've only done cataract surgeries and even then we wore full gear but not biohazard gear.. Always had to keep arms between waist and below shoulder etc

Possibly if the hand had been in contact with contaminated secretions, but I was referring to the sequence of photos of the 2 suited men and the washer hose with bubbles going everywhere.
In this group of photos:
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/ebola-outbr...repare-1460880

It is assumed that these are reusable suits and that the soap and water is to remove contaminants from the suited men.
Therefore, the water and soap spray from the suits is also contaminated when using the principles of aseptic technique. The walls and floor would have to be cleaned and dried to be clear of contaminants.
However, one can easily see the men exiting the dark red- orange door ( an elevator door?) with soap bubbles and water without soap splattered all over the door. They have to walk through the door, thus they are once again contaminated. Assuming that the doors open to a communal area of the facility, the doors are also a source of contamination/ particulate matter from the water spray.

The way around this is of course to wear disposable suiting and remove it according to aseptic technique in the ante- chamber of the isolation room.
At Dallas Presbyterian, they are providing showers, but it is after the isolation wear has been removed, of course.
The photos referenced above would be comical if the situation were not so serious.

OK thanks, I see what you are saying, and yes they would be contaminated again.

.....plans could theoretically prevent some people who are infected with the Ebola virus from entering the country. They also cannot possibly stop every person with Ebola who may arrive in the country. This is because of the simple realities of the disease ravaging West Africa, whose symptoms take time to manifest, as well as the nature of air travel in the 21st century.

Public health officials are realistic about this point, openly stating that the danger of additional Ebola cases in the United States will remain real as long as the outbreak is raging in West Africa, where the disease has killed more than 3,400 people and infected double that number.
“The plain truth is, we can’t make the risk zero until the outbreak is controlled in West Africa,” Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for....

My quote option is being weird but referring to the link above for Cariis' post: http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/eb...pplies-cripple-care-ebola-hit-liberia-n220686

“Before the epidemic, six physicians served all four counties (range = one to three per county). At the time of the evaluation, only three physicians remained; the others had left Liberia because of the epidemic,” they wrote.

“In two of four hospitals assessed, nursing staff members were not coming to work or had abandoned facilities; in another hospital, health care providers had not been paid for three months but were still providing basic care.”

Only 6 doctors for a country that is the size of Tennessee and has over 4 million people. Hospital that don't even have running water. This is crazy. Good Lord, so in order to help other countries have to build hospitals, provide doctors and staffs, establish running water, and bring all supplies etc?? What an incredible cost and amount opower. How overwhelming for these foreign doctors to deal with!!

So they do build a hospital/clinic and bring in supplies only to be hit by armed thieves who looted the place and caused patients to flee or escape?? They stole mattresses and other vital supplies, including contaminated materials. For what?? To sell to others who had no idea that it was contaminated?? Cause a new outbreak?? http://www.cnn.com/2014/08/17/world/africa/ebola-liberia-attack/

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/afric...liberia-clinic-looted-201481713725590885.html The head of Health Workers Association of Liberia, George Williams, said the unit had housed 29 patients who were receiving preliminary treatment before being taken to hospital....Of the 29 patients, 17 fled last night. Nine died four days ago and three others were taken by force by their relatives," he said. "They had all tested positive for Ebola."

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/report-armed-men-attack-liberia-ebola-clinic-freeing-patients/
"A crowd of several hundred local residents, chanting, 'No Ebola in West Point,' drove away the burial team and their police escort. The mob then forced open an Ebola isolation ward and took the patients out, many saying that the Ebola epidemic is a hoax. "

"West Point residents went on a "looting spree," stealing items from the clinic that were likely infected, said a senior police official, who insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the press. The residents took medical equipment and mattresses and sheets that had bloodstains, he said. Ebola is spread through bodily fluids including blood, vomit, feces and sweat."

I know this isn't new news but WTF is wrong with these people. Attacking the facility, stealing contaminated stuff, etc. How can you help people in a situation where you have people actively trying to go after to, threaten you with violence, steal contaminated stuff and spread lies that Ebola is a hoax.???

Nope, I couldn't do it, wouldn't go there to help. I have worked as a first responder and #1 rule is OUR SAFETY FIRST!!! No one going to help should ever be attacked and put at a deadly risk like that!!

Yeah, noone has reported anything on the markets Louise and her family may have initially gone to for food when they were initially told they could go out and not be quarantined. I'd like to know where they went and what precautions were taken at those places to disinfect.

I wonder about that too.

They are burned in special medical incinerators which are constructed for the purpose of disposing of infected or harmful waste.

How are they to clean Duncan's ventilator and dialysis equipment?
