I haven't read the book, only the passage provided in the linked article above.
I don't have a problem with it for an honors class. People have sex. I'd hope by the 9th grade., honors students would be aware of that fact.

I'm of the opinion that there is a difference between sex, and sexually explicit.

I'm all for teens reading. Period. I'm not all that particular about what. Literacy and enjoying reading should be encouraged and supported.

The 6 o'clock news is scarier to me than people having sex.

I do think parents should be able to opt their own child out. I would hope patents realize by opting their child out they'd actually be creating more interest in the child to read it. Or at least the explicit parts.
Opting out IMO shouldn't be news.

Baer himself went to EAGnews (Education Action Group) BEFORE he went to the School Board meeting that night.

Here is just a small portion of what EAGnews says about Baer in their article:

"For Baer, this incident is the latest indication that the nation’s public education system is bent on indoctrinating children with moral relativism.

He believes the politicians and educators running the public school system want to dismantle the family unit, and undermine traditional morality, “though they’re never going to admit this.”

“Many people in education and government truly believe our children are theirs. That parents are only the custodians who feed them and put a roof over their head. These school incidents are a byproduct of this ‘we know best’ philosophy. They believe they have the authority to do this. If people were more complacent, which is hard to imagine, it’d be even worse.”

Baer plans to attend the Gilford School Board meeting on Monday evening to discuss this issue with the leadership of the school."

I didn't introduce politics to the discussion, he went with a political agenda. It was obvious to me from watching the video that there was something more going on. I simply decided to see if I could discover what that might be. If people aren't interested in knowing more, then that is their decision. For myself, especially these days, with incidents such as this one, its imperative that I know more about 'what is really going on'.

Thanks IB Nora for the explanation - much appreciated. These days it does seem like there's an agenda with just about everything- nothing seems to be "it is just what it appears to be". I keep looking for the rose colored glasses I misplaced somewhere - I liked looking at life a whole lot better when I was looking at it through them ;) Alas I seem to have permanently lost them...

IMO Its his daughter. He could have simply sent a note to his daughters' teacher stating she wouldn't be reading that book. Period. End of it.

The dad was making a mountain out of a mole hill. It's a free public education. If he doesn't like the way things are being run, there are many options.

All IMO

I agree. Send a note and ask for an alternate assignment.

I would not be happy if that book was being taught in my child's class - especially an honours class. Not because it isn't appropriate, mind you, but because it isn't literature. It is, IMO, poorly written pop fiction. Furthermore, I don't agree with banning books or what have you just because it offends one's morals. Literature is supposed to make us cringe, think, cry, be offended, and amazed. Most 14 year old kids know more about sex than their parents think they do, but that is neither here nor there.

I am all for reading, as well. There are SO many books that kids can read, that are of a far higher quality. I mean, who thought it was a good idea to have raging hormone teenagers sitting around reading this stuff for school? I'm not appalled by it, I just think it's a dumb decision.

In order to opt out, the parents would need to know about it BEFORE their kids start reading it. Wasn't that the whole issue? The parents didn't know beforehand.

ETA: Actually, I am a little appalled. Not by the sex, but that this crap is considered literature now. That actually scares me.

Totally disagree. The dads concerns were valid. Free public education doesn't mean anything goes.
This is one reason people home school.
Fyi, my grandkidlets won't step a foot in a public school.

Thanks for this. Why am I not surprised.

I find this story is more entertaining:

Yea! I hope my grandkids will be home schooled.

Co-ops are becoming so popular here! He did classes at co-op, online live classes through Landry Academy, free college courses offered by places like Harvard, and currently I hired a SAT prep tutor 4 hours a week. He's 16 and should be enrolling full time in the fall:)

I have not read the book, but I have read the explicit sex scene in question, and find it despicable that a school would offer this as reading material to still impressionable 14 year olds. Oh, and an honors class doesn't necessarily mean the brighter students in it are more emotionally mature than the rest of their peers.

How many parents want their daughters or their sons reading about an incident in which the boy pins the girl's hands over her head, bites her on the shoulder, wants to have sex with her, she says no, so he rapes her, and then afterwards she tells him she loves him. WTF?
Suitable for 14 year olds? I don't think so!

This is wrong on so many accounts it's unbelievable, including, imo, distributing pornographic material to under aged children. Think about it because in it's true light that's what this sexual passage is, *advertiser censored*.

I don't care if the parent had another agenda, we don't need garbage in our schools confusing young minds as to what is or isn't acceptable behavior.

Parents should review any book assigned by their child's teachers, and if one is found to be objectionable request another choice.

I know when I was in high school, students were passing around the juicy books of the day, but I can guarantee you, teachers, principals, and school boards weren't complicit, and why not? Because they were books intended for adults, same as the book in question here.

About how the school board meeting was conducted, they did that here in my town with a city council or electric board meeting. The city owned Electric company went way up in rates and undercharged many, and it's poorly run. They had cops at the meeting, citizens told to attend a different meeting, couldn't speak, etc. The same scenario. Parents should have every right to deny a child reading any book they don't think is age appropriate. The teacher and principal should have handled it, IMO. Our taxes pay their salaries along with federal money they get to run schools.

While I am no fan of hidden political agendas in general, or the tea party in particular, I do have to point out that at least this parent bothered to take an interest in his child's school work. How many of those parents would have ever known what was in the book had they not heard it from him?

There are literally millions of reading choices out there. Save the sex stuff for college students. There is nothing so useful in a JP book that's worth exposing 14 year olds to this crap. Yes, they know sex exists. That doesn't mean parents have to be cool with them being assigned something like this.

I'm not going to call this guy a hero because it does appear he has his own agenda, but by not just privately contacting the teacher, he alerted lots of other parents who might have just trusted the school system without ever checking the book out.

Interesting... on one hand, shouldn't every parent be more supportive of public schools, and not causing trouble ? The public schools have a hard enough job as it is ; but they do that job well.
On the other hand, I'm not sure Mr. Baer isn't entitled to his own opinion...isn't there an alternate book his daughter could read ? He didn't seem out-of-control or dangerous---to me.
moo
Wow..

No, you don't walk lockstep and not voice your concerns over YOUR child's education. Parents SHOULD be involved.

Parents should not be force fed 'rules' for their own children and voicing concern is not 'causing trouble'.

ARRESTED! This man was ARRESTED! Never raised his voice or said anything threatening. Concerned about his child reading sexually explicit material.

ARRESTED!

Your kids see worse than this on the Internet and hear worse on the school bus every day. :twocents:

I know I did, and that was twenty five years ago lol.

And that makes it ok?

No, that sounds like giving up. You can monitor what your children see on the internet. You just have to be involved!

Unless you hover over their shoulder every minute they're online, there is no avoiding it. IMO, hovering doesn't make for a healthy kid, or parent for that matter.

I think it's fine. It's one passage in a larger story. Has nothing to do with "giving up", but rather not being hysterical about teenagers reading about sex.

Edit - that's also not even taking account account the talk kids have amongst themselves. You might hover over their shoulder and watch every keystroke online, but are you also going to tag along and monitor every conversation they have with peers too?

The thing is that it is not just about sex and teens. AS a teen I read books that had passages about teen sex.. This is graphic 50 shades of grey stuff and not appropriate for reading material in school. If a Parent wants to give permission for their kid to read it it is one thing but that is not what happened here.

Yep. You have to monitor it. especially these days.
