yes, and alcohol.
How do we stop addicts from using while pregnant legally though?
I've heard of addicts being charged after they give birth to addicted babies, but that does nothing to prevent the problem.
Many of these women don't even get pre-natal care so I'm not sure how you would inform them. Or IF they would even care.
You'd have to give out free drugs that don't damage the fetus to attract the real addicts. But with alcohol there would have to be
a media blitz to reach women.

I agree. Can they test him for this?
They can if they want to spend the money. Just the fact that he
was treated by several mental health facilities tells us they had
a pretty good idea, his brain was damaged. Maybe they didn't know to what extent, unless they did extensive brain scans but
the professionals probably had a pretty good idea what was wrong.

True it is a serious problem with no easy answers except offer free birth control to addicts.

Unless it’s a method like an IUD, it would still require the addict to be responsible enough to effectively use birth control. Sad.

‘It was my job, and I didn’t find him’: Stoneman Douglas resource officer remains haunted by massacre

He had worked as a sheriff’s deputy for 32 years, as a school resource officer for 28, and at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for nearly a decade. He was the lone deputy stationed at the school, sworn to serve and protect a community of students who called him “Dep,” honored him with awards, and invited him to proms and football games.

He had been admired and maybe even beloved up until a former student named Nikolas Cruz allegedly arrived at school with an AR-15. And ever since, Peterson had been living inside those next seven minutes. He had briefly considered changing his name or moving out of state, but even if he could somehow outrun infamy and embarrassment, he had decided there was no escape from the questions and doubts that consumed him.

‘It’s all crap’: Parents lash out after Parkland cop Scot Peterson ends silence

"You're a hero or a coward, and that's it," Peterson told his interviewer.

Peterson acknowledges the opprobrium with which his name now is associated. In the hours since the interview appeared, he's been referred to on Twitter as "the disgraced former campus deputy," the "scorned Parkland school cop," a "dirty little coward" and "the coward cop."

"How can they keep saying I did nothing," the Post quotes Peterson as asking his girlfriend. Peterson had studied surveillance footage, the story says, and reviewed witness statements in an effort to understand what went wrong. "I'm getting on the radio to call in the shooting. I'm locking down the school. I'm clearing kids out of the courtyard. They have the video and the call logs. The evidence is sitting right there."

A phone call about a possible hostage situation in Parkland on Tuesday morning led police officers to swarm the home of one of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School's most outspoken student activists.

It turned out to be a prank called "swatting" — an illegal hoax call increasingly employed as a harassment tactic.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office said the target of call was the Parkland home of Stoneman Douglas senior David Hogg.

'All the signs were there.' On video, guard says school knew Parkland shooter posed threat

"Nikolas Cruz. I knew the kid," security guard Andrew Medina told Broward detectives in a sworn video-recorded statement released by prosecutors on Tuesday evening.

As soon as Cruz began walking "like on a mission" toward the building, Medina followed and began frantically texting fellow security guards. "We had a meeting about him last year and we said if there's gonna be anybody whose gonna come to this school and shoot this school up, it's going to be that kid," Medina told detectives on the day of the Feb. 14 shooting.

Mental illness and brain damage are not the same thing.
Exactly. Do the folks commenting have proof that Nikolas Cruz has brain damage? Or are they speculating? Serious question: Is this website for gathering factual evidence, sharing updates, sources, research, etc.? Or making speculations? Or both? I'm new here and seeing a lot of comments stating NC has brain damage and fetal alcohol syndrome- this is the first time I've heard that. Any evidence? Thanks!

Stoneman Douglas campus monitor describes seeing shooter Nikolas Cruz arrive at school (with video clip)

"PARKLAND, Fla. (CBS12) — Prosecutors released new video of an interview between Andrew Medina, campus monitor and baseball coach, and Broward County Sheriff's Office detectives.

Medina said he saw confessed school shooter Nikolas Cruz getting out of a gold-colored Uber around 2:20 p.m.

"He pulled out, he came, he's walking down with a black bag in his hand and a backpack," he said. "He's beelining. He's got his head down. He's on a mission, you know. He's on a mission."

Medina said Cruz appeared to have a purpose. He alerted the security guard in the 1200 building, where the deadly shooting happened.

“I said, ‘Coach Taylor, got a suspicious subject on campus. Got a black bag in his hands. Keep your eyes open because I think he’s going into your building,’” Medina told detectives...."

Attorneys For Nikolas Cruz Seek to Block Release of His Statement to Detectives After Shooting
The motion says Nikolas Cruz spoke to Broward Sheriff’s Det. John Curcio while under arrest but was not issued a Miranda warning

"Attorneys for Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz are seeking an emergency hearing to block the release of a statement the confessed mass killer made just hours after his capture.

The defense claims prosecutors are prepared to release a transcript and video of the statement Thursday or Friday, but want Judge Elizabeth Scherer to block that release until she determines which sections may be exempt from public release.

A hearing has been scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m. to address the motion.

As grounds, public defender Howard Finkelstein argues release “will cause significant trauma to an already beleaguered community, impede the defendant’s constitutional right against self-incrimination, as well as his right to a fair and impartial trial.”..."

Update on Parkland shooting: Cruz in court (with clip)

June 08, 2018

"Attorneys for the Parkland Florida shooting suspect want to block the public release of some of their client's statements.

Nikolas Cruz entered the courtroom Friday morning with his head down. His attorneys argue that Cruz's statements could cause significant trauma to the community.

They added that the release would violate Cruz's constitutional rights to a fair trial and against self-incrimination.

The judge says she needs to review video and transcripts of the statements before ruling. ..."

Parkland shooter's lawyers and prosecutors debate release of confession

June 08, 2018

"A Broward judge on Friday put a temporary halt on the release of the Parkland school shooter’s recorded confession after defense lawyers sparred with prosecutors over how much to make public.

Nikolas Cruz gave a statement to Broward Sheriff’s Det. John Curcio hours after Cruz shot and killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and injured 17 others on Feb. 14.

The recording lasts about 12 hours, with a transcript running more than 200 pages, according to attorneys.

Cruz arrived for Friday’s hearing in his red jail jumpsuit, head down and sporting a buzz-cut. He appeared to laugh for a moment as he first sat down after a few words from his defense lawyer, special assistant public defender David Frankel. For the rest of the morning, he was expressionless.

Frankel and other defense lawyers say parts of Cruz’s statement are exempt from release under the state’s public records law, while other portions should be redacted out of sensitivity to the victims...

Broward Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer declined to give defense lawyers an advance look at the state’s proposed redactions, but she agreed to review them herself to decide whether Cruz’s rights as a defendant were protected.

She ordered prosecutors to hold off on releasing the confession until she makes her decision...."
