Shamed ex-deputy Scot Peterson seeks protection from Parkland parents

"Former Broward Sheriff’s Deputy Scot Peterson wants a Broward judge to protect him from having to answer questions about his inaction the day he took cover outside Marjory Stoneman Douglas HIgh School while Nikolas Cruz went on a killing spree inside.

Peterson, who resigned under pressure days after the Feb. 14 massacre, said in court papers filed Thursday that he has been subject to insults and ridicule, and labeled a coward by members of a statewide commission investigating the shooting.

Peterson, one of several defendants named in a civil lawsuit filed by the parents of shooting victim Meadow Pollack, said he fears for his safety if he shows up at a Dec. 17 deposition and the girl’s father, Andrew, is there.

“Extraordinarily high emotionalism … is driving people involved in the MSD [Marjory Stoneman Douglas] matter,” wrote Peterson’s attorney, Michael Piper. “It would be disingenuous to deny the very real possibility of Peterson’s deposition being disrupted, even to the extent of physical violence.”

Peterson is asking Broward Circuit Judge Patti Englander Henning to postpone his scheduled deposition, make sure it takes place in the Broward courthouse, and keep everyone out of the room except for lawyers, a court reporter and a videographer...."

School dumps quiz titled, 'Does Nikolas Cruz Deserve to Die?'

"The administration at Coral Glades High School in Coral Springs distanced itself from a quiz given to students Friday with the headline “Does Nikolas Cruz Deserve to Die?” — saying it’s been yanked from the curriculum.

The quiz asks 10 questions about the death penalty, including students to give statements for and against the death penalty, and whether they are based on fact or emotion. Another reference in the quiz to the Feb. 14 Parkland massacre is a “Let him rot forever” quote from Parkland student activist Cameron Kasky.

The quiz content appeared to come from The New York Times Upfront, a magazine for high school students, published by Scholastic Inc. in partnership with The New York Times.

A picture of the quiz was posted on Twitter on Friday. A student said it was sent to him by a parent of a student from Coral Glades High. “Crazy idea, don’t give kids assignments on the shooter that killed their friends?” Kenneth Preston wrote....'

"FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. —The guard who was attacked by Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz last month should not be allowed to continue supervising him, Cruz's lawyers argue in court papers filed Friday.

Defense lawyers want Sgt. Ray Beltran and Cruz separated for everyone's safety —the deputy had been getting under Cruz's skin for weeks before Cruz punched him on Nov. 13 and wrestled away his stun gun, according to defense lawyer Melisa McNeill.

Now that Beltran is a witness against Cruz and the victim in a criminal case, he should no longer be supervising Cruz at the Broward Main Jail, McNeill argued.

In a series of emails obtained by the South Florida Sun Sentinel, the Broward Sheriff's Office rejected defense efforts to assign another deputy, arguing that inmates don't get to force the agency's hand by attacking people they don't like....

Reyes turned down the request.

"In 2017 the Broward Sheriff's Office Department of Detention had over 80 incidents of inmate violence against staff. In those incidents staff were material witnesses as well as the listed victim," he said. Parkland Victim’s Dad Slams Schools for Quizzing Students on Nikolas Cruz

"The father of a Parkland shooting victim took to social media on Friday to share his outrage about a new school assignment for Broward County students.

Andrew Pollack, whose 18 year old daughter, Meadow, died during the shooting at Stoneman Davis, tweeted, “This is absolutely despicable. Broward schools is now giving assignments to students on the shooter that murdered my daughter and 16 others.”

He shared a photograph of a quiz that the school system is giving out to students. You can see that, and his original tweet, here:...

After his daughter, Meadow, was killed in the Parkland shooting, Andrew Pollack became a strong supporter of a bill that would put guns into the hands of school staff. He was in the gallery when the Florida School Safety bill was passed in March. Speaking to reporters after the vote, Pollack said he hopes no parent ever has to experience what he did:

“My precious daughter Meadow’s life was taken and there’s nothing I can do to change that. But make no mistake, I’m a father and I’m on a mission. I’m on a mission to ensure that I am the last dad to ever read a statement of this kind.

"Investigators and prosecutors must release hundreds of pages of interview transcripts related to the Parkland school shooting or risk violating the state’s public records law, attorneys for the South Florida Sun Sentinel and Miami Herald argued in court papers filed late Monday.

The news organizations say the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which conducted 191 interviews, or the Broward State Attorney’s Office, which obtained them as part of the case against Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooter Nikolas Cruz, are “unlawfully and improperly denying access to the records and should be ordered immediately to release them.”

The interviews are tangential to the criminal case — FDLE’s goal was related to identifying “system failures” before and during the shooting, including questions about law enforcement training and the emergency response to the tragedy as it unfolded. The interviews were conducted for the Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Commission, a statewide task force charged with making recommendations to avoid a repeat of the shooting, which claimed 17 lives.

Under Florida law, police agencies and prosecutors are not required to release information that is part of an active criminal investigation. Information that is provided to criminal defense lawyers becomes a public record, but even then prosecutors are required to withhold certain portions, including confessions....

Prosecutors have already released numerous witness statements, videos from outside the school and cellphone recordings made by Cruz prior to the shootings.

According to the motion, Scherer admitted during a Nov. 27 hearing that continued interaction between Cruz and Beltran was "not a good idea," but she expressed concern that she didn't have the authority to issue such an order.

Since April, the 15-member Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety commission met seven times to dissect the events leading up to the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High that left 17 dead and another 17 wounded. Its findings have prompted resignations and reassignments at the Broward Sheriff’s Office and Stoneman Douglas and effected policy and protocol changes in several governmental organizations.

Commission chair and Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said the investigative phase of the commission, which will sunset in 2023, is “significantly done.”

At Parkland, the new records — 643 pages of interviews of officers on the scene conducted by FDLE — show that did not happen. BSO deputies who responded to Stoneman Douglas said they were hampered by faulty radios and bad information.

"A Florida lawyer representing 15 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High students says he is "exploring all of our options" after a federal judge ruled that law enforcement and school officials had no legal duty to protect students during a Valentine's Day rampage at the school that left 17 people dead.

The ruling came as a new report separately revealed that school officials rewound a school surveillance video as the massacre unfolded, confusing officers trying to track down suspected shooter Nikolas Cruz.

Lawyer Kristoffer Budhram filed suit claiming the 15 students suffered "psychological injuries" as a result of the attack. The suit claimed the school district and county either have a policy of allowing “killers to walk through a school killing people without being stopped” or failed to adequately train employees to respond.

Budhram argued the students deserved protection under the 14th Amendment right to due process, citing a “clearly established right to be (free) from deliberate indifference to substantial known risks and threats of injury.”

Judge Beth Bloom dismissed the suit in a ruling filed last week.

"The critical question the court analyzes is whether defendants had a constitutional duty to protect plaintiffs from the actions of Cruz," Bloom wrote. But she determined that "for such a duty to exist on the part of defendants, plaintiffs would have to be considered to be in custody.” ...

This week the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, citing newly released records, reported that school officials rewound school surveillance video to find the gunman, then described Cruz's whereabouts to officers. But the school officials apparently did not make clear to the officers that the information was several minutes old.

"The Federal Commission on School Safety's final report this week contains discussions of two areas where the media and mass school shootings intersect.

One is a relatively brief chapter on the potential effects of violent entertainment on school tragedies, something that federal reports in the wake of other major incidents have also addressed. The other is about the effects of press coverage of mass shootings.

"This is the first federal report to examine the issue of media coverage as it relates to the perpetuation of violence," says the report, a point reiterated by U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos in a conference call with reporters on Dec. 18.

In its report, the commission states: "Press coverage of school shootings is often sensational, which can exacerbate the trauma of those directly and indirectly affected and potentially incite successive events." It says that reports indicate the alleged shooter in the Feb. 14 mass shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., has "received letters of encouragement, greeting cards, and even money in prison," all as a result of his high public profile based on media coverage.

Although the commission's report names the Parkland suspect, Nikolas Cruz, in footnotes, it does not name him in the main text, a move evidently in keeping with one of its principal recommendations that media outlets adopt the "No Notoriety" campaign...."

Parkland Shooter Obsessively Texted Girl He Labeled in His Contacts As 'Warning Love Of Your Life'

"...The Miami Herald reports that Nikolas Cruz harassed a girl who lived near his workplace, obsessively texting and calling her non-stop in the weeks leading up to the February 14 shooting.

This girl was referenced in a video Cruz made on his phone right before the shooting. BSO released the video in May.

“My love for you, [redacted], will never go away,” Cruz said, topping off a droning speech about his loneliness, isolation, and anger. “I hope to see you in the afterlife.”

Cruz stored her as “Warning Love of Your Life” in his phone’s contacts. While the girl texted with Cruz, she never dated him and did not reciprocate those feelings, reporting that she was afraid of him.

The report notes that a month before the mass killing, Cruz went online and posed a jarring question on the Quora Q&A site: “I am neurotypical. How can I pretend to be a psychopath and get diagnosed as one?” And during an interview with lead detective John Curcio of the Broward County Sheriff's Office, Cruz seemed to be in distress at times, but the detective wasn't buying it. At one point, Cruz starts to hyperventilate, but Curcio writes that it "appears to be an act."..."

I don't know if the report I posted is the newest report released that the media is writing about, but it's the most recent one that was posted on the Dec 20 article (it is 425 pages). I haven't been able to find another one.

"Immediately after a 19-year-old shot and killed 17 people and wounded 17 others at a Florida high school on Valentine’s Day, people leaped to explain what had caused the latest mass slaughter....

“There is little good research on what are probably a host of problems contributing to mass violence,” says criminologist Grant Duwe of the Minnesota Department of Corrections in St. Paul. Duwe has spent more than two decades combing through federal crime records and newspaper accounts to track trends in mass killings.

Perhaps this dearth of data is no surprise. Research on any kind of gun violence gets little federal funding (SN Online: 3/9/18; SN: 5/14/16, p. 16). Criminologist James Alan Fox of Northeastern University in Boston has argued for more than 20 years that crime researchers mostly ignore mass shootings.
