'It never ends': Search for Susy Tomassi spans 4 months
INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — They planned a summer vacation to Italy together, but Patrick Tomassi was forced to go alone after his wife vanished March 16. She hasn't been seen since.
Patrick and Susy Tomassi planned to connect with family in Naples and attend a wedding in July.
That changed in mid-March, when Susy Tomassi, 73, walked to the back porch of The Quilted Giraffe on U.S. 1 in south Indian River County — the restaurant the St. Lucie couple owns together — and vanished.
Patrick Tomassi said he stepped inside to take a phone call while his wife went out to read, and when he returned, she was gone.
"Everybody says, 'you need to get away. You need to go see your family,'" he said.
He hopes reconnecting with family will be a distraction from the agonizing reality of his situation: It's been more than four months without a shred of evidence.
"It never ends," he said. "People ask you, 'how you doing? How you doing? How you doing?' It's kind of a tough question. It's been four months and nothing."
Police continue to search for a missing 73-year-old St. Lucie County woman named Assunta Susy Tomassi who has dementia and has been missing since March16. On Friday, volunteers from Fort Pierce with Angels of Hope were in Brevard County tracking down tips. They were passing out flyers, canvassing shopping centers and visiting homeless camps tracking down leads. Members of the Angels of Hope circle up for a prayer before heading out to canvas shopping centers and homeless camps.
Indian River County sheriff's deputies said the case hasn't gone cold. They are still getting tips and actively investigating Susy Tomassi’s disappearance.
“We’re still catching calls from around the state,” said Maj. Eric Flowers, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.
Most recently, the investigation led detectives to Clearwater, where reports were received about a woman who looked like Susy Tomassi. After pulling video and credit card information for the woman, detectives determined it wasn’t Susy Tomassi.
Detectives have even been solicited by a psychic, who claimed to have information. Other apparent sightings have led detectives out of state.
“None have panned out at this point,” Flowers said.
