'It never ends': Search for Susy Tomassi spans 4 months

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — They planned a summer vacation to Italy together, but Patrick Tomassi was forced to go alone after his wife vanished March 16. She hasn't been seen since.

Patrick and Susy Tomassi planned to connect with family in Naples and attend a wedding in July.

That changed in mid-March, when Susy Tomassi, 73, walked to the back porch of The Quilted Giraffe on U.S. 1 in south Indian River County — the restaurant the St. Lucie couple owns together — and vanished.

Patrick Tomassi said he stepped inside to take a phone call while his wife went out to read, and when he returned, she was gone.

"Everybody says, 'you need to get away. You need to go see your family,'" he said.

He hopes reconnecting with family will be a distraction from the agonizing reality of his situation: It's been more than four months without a shred of evidence.

"It never ends," he said. "People ask you, 'how you doing? How you doing? How you doing?' It's kind of a tough question. It's been four months and nothing."

Police continue to search for a missing 73-year-old St. Lucie County woman named Assunta Susy Tomassi who has dementia and has been missing since March16. On Friday, volunteers from Fort Pierce with Angels of Hope were in Brevard County tracking down tips. They were passing out flyers, canvassing shopping centers and visiting homeless camps tracking down leads. Members of the Angels of Hope circle up for a prayer before heading out to canvas shopping centers and homeless camps.

Indian River County sheriff's deputies said the case hasn't gone cold. They are still getting tips and actively investigating Susy Tomassi’s disappearance.

“We’re still catching calls from around the state,” said Maj. Eric Flowers, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.

Most recently, the investigation led detectives to Clearwater, where reports were received about a woman who looked like Susy Tomassi. After pulling video and credit card information for the woman, detectives determined it wasn’t Susy Tomassi.

Detectives have even been solicited by a psychic, who claimed to have information. Other apparent sightings have led detectives out of state.

“None have panned out at this point,” Flowers said.

New clue revealed in search for missing woman in Vero Beach
The sheriff's office said she left her family's restaurant, the Quilted Giraffe, on US 1 in Vero Beach. She's last seen on surveillance video walking near South Vero Square.

Investigators released a new photo that they're asking people to take a good look at. The image shows someone apparently getting into the passenger side of a white truck near where Tomassi was last seen.

The sheriff's office realizes the image is not of the best quality. They hope someone recognizes the truck. Or, if anyone knows of someone who drives a white truck who used to visit the area and now no longer does.

There is a $15,000 reward offered by her family for her safe return. There's an additional $5000 reward for credible information, according to the sheriff's office.

Family members said the then 73-year-old was in the first stages of dementia when she went to the back porch of The Quilted Giraffe, at 500 U.S. 1, on March 16 around 5:15 p.m. according to a sheriff's report.

Patrizio Tomassi reported his wife missing around 6:45 p.m. telling deputies he looked for her for 1 ½ hours in a nearby plaza off U.S. 1 and Oslo Road where she frequently shopped, but couldn’t find her.

Searches in nearby swampy conservation land had no results. In 2019, detectives released surveillance footage enhanced by the FBI.

New Video Shows White Truck Picking up Pedestrian (1)

Officials said it showed for the first time what is thought to be the last known sighting of Tomassi.

In footage from what appears to be a camera near a generator behind Publix in South Vero Square, a large white pickup pulls up to Oslo Road and stops as a figure similar in build to Tomassi passes behind its tailgate walking west.

The person returns to the truck and gets in the passenger side before the truck pulls away appearing to go east on Oslo Road, which ends at a boat ramp and conservation area.

Security video from the day she vanished shows Susy walking through South Vero Square, the shopping plaza next door to the family’s restaurant.

Different video shows her talking to someone in a white pickup truck before getting into the truck.

“You could see it,” Patrick said of the video. “She goes to the driver’s side and talks to this person, then walks around the truck and gets in the passenger seat. Then she disappears.”

Patrick said that was a symptom of Susy’s dementia: she thought everyone was a friend.

Police have been searching for that pickup for four years but haven’t had any luck finding it.

On Tuesday, they released clearer, more defined photos of the truck.

IRCSO detectives say the truck had been seen in the plaza several times before, so it’s possible people who were at South Vero Square Plaza might know the driver or be able to provide details. Plus, the truck was known to frequent the nearby Oslo Road Conservation Area.

Detectives also say they’re hoping the driver could shed light on Tomassi’s disappearance.

Assunta Susy Tomassi – The Charley Project

Last updated February 16, 2022; details of disappearance updated.

Details of Disappearance
Tomassi was last seen at the Quilted Giraffe, the restaurant she owned with her husband on south U.S. 1 in Vero Beach, Florida, on March 16, 2018. She walked away from the business at 5:40 p.m. and has never been heard from again. Her husband realized she was missing and began searching for her twenty minutes later.

She got into the passenger side of a white truck near south Vero Square after leaving the Quilted Giraffe. A photo of the truck, as taken from security footage of the area, is posted with this case summary. The video showed the driver rolling down the window and speaking to Tomassi before she got inside the truck, after which it pulled away.

Police would like to speak to anyone who remembers seeing a white truck in the vicinity at around the time Tomassi disappeared, as they want to identify the driver. They believe the truck had seen been in the area several times before she went missing.

Tomassi had been known to leave the restaurant before to visit the nearby Family Dollar store, but she's never gone very far or stayed away very long before. Her husband sold the restaurant after her disappearance and the building was torn down. Foul play is not suspected in her case, but it remains unsolved.

Wasn't there a license plate on the truck? I thought in the new photos released that there was a license plate on the truck? The first images released were very grainy. Maybe technology has improved.

One photo shows a very blurry license plate. Perhaps they can’t make it clear enough to be readable. However, DMV records should be able to give them a short list of who is registered with that type of vehicle in that county. Most perps aren’t going to loiter or troll for victims far from home. JMO.

To be behind a plaza could mean an employee of a nearby business because who else would have a reason to be back there? Nowadays there’s a lot of homeless people living in the landscaping around plazas. I’m not sure how populated areas like that would have been back in 2018.
