I saw this. So sad. I know closure doesn’t really exist but maybe finding her will offer some semblance of peace to her family. Interested to see how the white truck she was last seen figures into this though.

Back on March 3, a fisherman reported finding skeletal remains approximately 150 yards north of Oslo Road deep in the mangrove tree coastline.

At that time, deputies went through personal items found near the remains leading them to believe they had found Tomassi

Authorities say the 73-year-old was last seen in 2018 getting into a white pickup truck behind the Publix at Oslo Road and U.S.-1.

I’m so intrigued by how - 5 years later- remains were suddenly found in an area that had reportedly been searched. Also, how were there even any “personal items” in decent enough shape after 5 years, at least 3 hurricanes, and the Florida climate for LEO to actually be able to go through to help in identification?

Tomassi, who was in the early stages of dementia, walked away from the Quilted Giraffe restaurant March 16, 2018, and was never seen again. The mysterious circumstances surrounding her disappearance — including investigators' belief that she may have been abducted — led to a years-long search by both police and the community, and even involvement by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Tomassi was last seen behind the Publix at U.S. 1 and Oslo Road, and the remains were found about a mile from there. Investigators believe the remains belong to Tomassi because of personal items located near the site

The mysterious circumstances surrounding Tomassi's disappearance — including investigators' belief that she may have been abducted — led to a years-long search by police, the community and the FBI. The family offered a $15,000 reward.

When Tomassi disappeared five years ago, video evidence appeared to show her heading east in the direction of the boat ramp.

Surveillance footage from shops in the South Vero Square plaza show her walking along U.S.1 near Oslo Road, toward the Oslo Conservation Area. The conservation area is heavily wooded, with trails and a small channel of water winding a tangled path to the Indian River Lagoon. Aside from the trails and a boat ramp at the east end of Oslo Road, there is only a University of Florida outpost, home to mosquito researchers, and the Pelican Island Audubon House.

In 2018, Tomassi's family enlisted the help of nonprofit Texas EquuSearch, which, using horses, conducts volunteer-mounted search-and-recovery efforts.

It was routine for her to walk to a nearby park and smoke a cigarette, her family said at the time. But detectives believed Tomassi may have been abducted, as surveillance video showed a pedestrian, who appeared to be Tomassi, getting into an unidentified white pickup truck behind Publix.

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – Skeletal remains discovered in a mangrove swamp in March were found definitively to belong to Susy Tomassi, the missing 73-year-old with dementia who forensic analysts said was shot and killed after walking away from a family restaurant five years ago.

The identity and cause of death were announced Tuesday by Indian River County Sheriff’s Office officials citing findings of local medical examiners and University of Florida forensic anthropologists.

Dental records were among laboratory measures used to identify Tomassi from remains found March 3 in a dense mangrove swamp of the Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area north of the Oslo Road Boat Ramp.

“We have, I would say, the majority of her skeletal remains recovered,” said Sheriff Eric Flowers. “As well as most of the clothing and her belongings. The majority of them were recovered.”

Flowers would not disclose the location of the gunshot wound, but said no other signs of trauma were uncovered from the bones found scattered in the “muddy, murky, mangrove area.”

“That’s the main thing − the gunshot wound,” Flowers said, after a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

*********
Sheriff Eric Flowers reported on Tuesday that Tomassi had been shot and that it contributed to her death.

The department also reported that Tomassi’s body was found near expensive items, including jewelry, so they do not believe it was a robbery attempt.

Investigators reported that the last time Tomassi was seen alive, she was seen getting into a white truck at a Publix located at Oslo Road and U.S. Highway 1.

A witness came forward saying that a man driving a similar-looking truck attempted to get her to go in the truck with him just before Tomassi was reported missing.

The witness told authorities that she could not recall the exact date that the incident occurred, but says it occurred several months before Tomassi was reported missing.

The suspect is described as a man 30 to 40 years old with a medium build with almost shoulder-length brown hair.

The sheriff’s office says they did not hear about this tip until recently.

If you believe you have any information about this incident, you are asked to contact Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-800-273-8477.

The sheriff's office says it has gotten 22 calls and is following up on 14 of the tips, and the other eight were about the information they were already aware of.

The sketch is of a man who another woman says tried to lure her into a white pickup truck a few months before Tomassi disappeared in 2018.

Sheriff Eric Flowers will hold a news conference at 2:15 p.m.
The article I posted earlier seems to have been removed. When I search for news about ST from the past day it still shows as result, but when I click on it it goes to a different article. I think it may have been an error on their part..

There’s no mention of a news conference on Indian River Co. SO FB page. Indian River County Sheriff's Office
