"Schenecker told the jury he'd had no reason to distrust his wife, whom he divorced in 2011, months after she was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. She was drinking more — enough to alarm him —but he felt no hesitation. When he talked to his children several days into his trip, they seemed untroubled as well, he said."

And yet...in his emails of the month prior, he wrote:
"Julie's not doing so well...isn't taking all the meds...won't get out of bed until 4-5 p.m."
"Her drinking and driving could have killed herself, our kids..."
"The kids (both now) are VERY angry with her...she's not living up to what she's supposed to do/be as a mother..."
"I MUST protect them (the kids); they are telling me they feel unsafe...they've asked their father for protection (the hard part is that they've asked protection from their mother)"
"She's been in bed pretty much 24/7 for the past 5 weeks...her memory is shot, and her balance is way off. She's been falling quite a bit lately."
"She's mentioned suicide"

The children, at ages 13 and 16 could see to their own meals, make it to carpool and to activities. As a military officer, he was used to having to leave his children and wife behind. The fact that the children were angry with her was another matter to be dealt with in long-term family counseling he was seeking.

IIRC, he considered bringing his mother in to help, but Julie nixed the idea, saying she'd be okay. She'd done it many times before and he hoped it would work out for a grand total of 10 days. If he had known of the total hatred she felt, I wonder what he would have done.

Aside from responding to your post, I would also address the idea of a major intervention. At best, it would have forced JS into long-term treatment, but only if she agreed. Otherwise, the only power PS had was to have her Baker Acted, which only lasts for 72 hours in FL. She is intelligent enough to put on an act for the doctors for that time and not seem a danger to herself and others. Once home again, I have no doubt her amount of rage would have increased exponentially. JS was walking a very thin tight-rope. In this case, he decided to trust his wife's word.

Good point! It's possible he felt she had gotten better and perhaps he thought she would accept help if needed. These examples are going to make it difficult for the jury in deliberation. I'm still of the mind she knew right from wrong. Husband and I have asked ourselves how he could have left her alone. Imagining your wife could murder your kids is probably something most Of us think happens to other people. I do think that she would've killed anyone who had come to help out. It is a complex case and it's no wonder we have a wide variety of opinions!!

Even though he'd left the family numerous times in the past, it sounds like JS had reached a new low -- she was barely functional, was falling a lot, had lost short-term memory, was drinking (she hadn't abused alcohol previously), the children were afraid of her driving, and yet she would be responsible for carting them to soccer games and such. JS's Mom wrote Parker, concerned that JS was suicidal, offering to come, but only if he gave the go-ahead.

I'm sure Parker must be haunted by "...if I had only..."

They haven't been released yet as far as I know.

ETA: Morning Sleuthers! I'm not sure why or how I copied both posts. Haven't had my coffee yet and I have bumble thumbs apparently! lol
I went to make some coffee and do up the dishes and we're still waiting I see.

:waiting:

Oh as I'm typing this she's in the courtroom! We're Live Folks!!

What happened to the 15 minutes until trial began? Idc if her legs are numb. Wheel her in on a wheelchair and start the trial. Mentally ill or not, her children didn't have these rights because JS took them from them.

BBM: Just offering up a fyi on this: Here in FL the initial time frame for a Baker Act is indeed 72 hours, but it can be extended if the attending physician deems it necessary for a longer stay.

I think this is a delay tactic by JS. jmo

I don't think she is a very happy person today that the DR made her have to go to the trial.
