Bumping - Someone sent me a link with names of deserters and there were a couple in the months following this man's death but none of them had photos. I contacted the Army tips link that was on the page and sent them this John Doe's info. No reply so far.

I kept wondering about that Pegasus tattoo and thinking that maybe he lost a drunken bet or something. I found this yesterday: https://www.dvidshub.net/feature/SpartanPegasus

Spartan Pegasus is a multi-component, joint military exercise which validates U.S. Army Alaska’s unique capacity to conduct airborne operations and ground mobility in extreme arctic conditions. The exercise further refines planning and mission capabilities between U.S. Army Alaska, the U.S. Air Force, the Alaska National Guard, and the State of Alaska.

The Doe Network: Case File 3532DMLA

KWTindale.jpg

Keith William Tindale
Missing since June 1, 1983 from Barksdale Air Force Base, Bossier Parish, Louisiana
Classification: Missing

Vital Statistics

    • Date Of Birth: October 10, 1961
    • Age at Time of Disappearance: 22 years old
    • Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 6'0"; 160 lbs.
    • Distinguishing Characteristics: White male. Brown hair; blue eyes. He wears glasses.
    • Marks, Scars: Birthmarks on left and right knees, fracture of lower leg and right foot or leg, left index finger fracture.
    • Dentals: Available.
    • DNA: Available.

Circumstances of Disappearance
Keith Tindale was last seen on June 1, 1983 at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. He went camping with two friends on the East Reservation.
He is listed as a missing person, and is also wanted for desertion. Air Force officials consider Tindale's case one of a deserter who, afraid of a pending court-martial, gave away his belongings, took money out of his bank account and left. Records show Tindale had withdrawn $900 from the bank on May 31, 1983, purchased a motorcycle from a fellow airman and sold or gave away his personal effects that same day.
They say their files do not indicate foul play in Tindale's disappearance, and, therefore, the military never conducted a criminal investigation and never searched the East Reservation.
Tindale, a straight-A high school student described by his mother as a "book nut," joined the Air Force in 1980 after graduating from high school in Florida. After brief stints at bases in San Antonio and Wichita Falls, Texas, he went to Barksdale to work as a metal fabrications specialist. While in Louisiana, Tindale called his mother every other Sunday like clockwork and wrote a letter to his sister every week.
In May 1982, Tindale drove home to Florida on a Kawasaki 1000 motorcycle. Air Force personnel in Florida confiscated the cycle, and Tindale was threatened with a court-martial for stealing the bike. A year later, when he disappeared, the court-martial was still on hold.

They both have dental records available, but you never know unless you submit (if this hasn't already been done).

I thought the UID had brown eyes. That wouldn't match with Tinsdale's blue eyes.

Here's the updated Namus link: Unidentified Person Case

No ruleouts listed, at least not visible to the public.

Decomposition changes the color of the eyes to brown/black.
I'm always open to the stated eye color being wrong (if it's brown) just in case that wasn't taken into consideration.
I'm not saying that happened here, it's just a general knowledge thing. :)

I emailed the Sheriff's office about Steven Delgado. I asked about tattoos and if it was Steven in Florida or his family was in Florida. The timeline is off a couple months so I'm reaching a bit. Maybe the DLC is when the report was taken and not the actual date.

A medical examiner I talked to a while back told me the discoloration from decomposition is nothing like natural color and while the darkening can obscure what the original color was, it should never be mistaken for brown or black coloring. Of course not all MEs or coroners are competent, and even good people make mistakes, so it's possible.

I think it's quite likely our UID is somebody like Tinsdale, missing from a military installation.

There are some guys on here from the summer of 1984. I did email the Army but I never got a response. I wanted to see if I could shake a photo of any of them out of Ancestry or another such site but I haven't had time yet. If anyone wants to give it a shot here is a deserter list:
Army Most Wanted Fugitives

Desertion is absent for 30 days so the July/August cases would be the most probable. We don't know how much leave he had or when he was due back so it's a bit of a guess but anyone in 1984 would be likely if he was active.

Think I found the Find a Grave for the family of DGF, missing July 9, 1984. His father seems to have been a career army man, with service in WW2 and Korea as well as overseas during the cold war. I won't post a link because of sleuthing nonrelated people, but it's easy to find (obviously, since I found it :p )

May have found a brother of HWT.

I found him, too, and his yearbook picture and sent it to the medical examiner yesterday to see if they could compare to any of their pm photos if they have any.
I also asked them to contact CarlK to do an updated recon for him and asked them to consider DDP.

I found this guy on the Army deserter list:
DOUGLAS GLENN FALER Male White Rank E1 Desertion Date 7/9/1984

Then there is a new article about (what seems to be) the same man graduation from some training in Texas. The article is dated June 14 but doesn't say when the graduation actually was. Presumably it was in May or June.

I'd love to believe I found the John Doe but if the tattoos tell a story then he shouldn't still be an E1 unless he got knocked down rank(s) for something.

Desertion is usually 30 days AWOL so Pvt Faler didn't report for duty about June 9, 1984. John Doe was found May 24.

If he graduated in May and then went away for Memorial Day Weekend (or went to Florida becuase that was where he was to report to next) and drowned it kind of makes sense and it all lines up. Except for the E1 thing...........

Yeah, Faler is the guy I found. I think @Alleykins has a picture from his yearbook. Didn't want to post it here in case he's not still missing.
