Florida State University professor Dan Markel was found in his Tallahassee, Florida, home on Friday. Police say there were no signs of robbery or burglary and have yet to disclose any motive.
According to Tallahassee police, officers found Markel after a neighbor called 911 at about 11 a.m. with reports of a "loud bang."

Markel, 41, was rushed to a local hospital, where he died the following day. "While we cannot release specific information or details regarding this case, the Violent Crimes Unit is releasing that Mr. Markel's cause of death was a fatal gunshot wound to the head," Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo said in a statement.
By Monday, police had categorized the case as a homicide, and according to Tallahassee Police Department spokesman David Northway, Markel was the intended target.

There was a movie recently about that. Apparently most “hit men” people hire are actually undercover cops. Apparently from what I understand, real “hit men” don’t exist.
ty, I've followed many murder cases where the hit was made by a derelict in need of money and had no qualms about killing for money. Maybe some that are asked are LE but there are still plenty of others out there willing to do the job. JMOO

Oh "hitmen" exist. Just have to read the international news. ..." the trial exposed the covert world of Mr. Le Roux’s band of guns-for-hire, who, he testified, were kept on retainer for as much as $10,000 a month — plus expenses for food, fuel and travel. Mr. Le Roux admitted that he paid his men an extra $25,000 for “bonus work,” which he described as “acts of killing and any other acts of violence.”
No desperation needed....just greed and lack of humanity.

Ex-U.S. Army Soldiers Worked as Hitmen for International Crime Boss, Say Prosecutors

There is another case I read, also ex-military/soldier of fortune types who also were just caught. (in USA) Life is precious...
these dumbos could have gotten good paying jobs being guards for movie stars or some such. Why do they always think they won't be caught or have their employers/accomplices turn on them??

Indeed, if you go this route the hitman you typically end up with does turn out to be a Luis Rivera or Sigfredo Garcia -- not Léon: The Professional. The Adelsons were truly bozos to think that it was a good idea to let Katie Magbanua arrange for the murder of Dr. Markel.

Yes, the 1994 movie “Léon: The Professional” (directed by Luc Besson and stared by Jean Reno, Gary Oldman, and Natalie Portman) describes vividly the life style of a “skilled” Hit Man. The movie is supposedly an exaggeration of a real life character’s skills, who operated in Marseille and the surrounding southern departments of France.

The Criminology literature does report some interesting studies (e.g. see attached article) about Hit Men. Sigfredo Garcia could be considered as of “The Dilettante” category. Sigfredo Garcia has allegedly accepted The Adelsons’ contract as a way to make ends meet financially and … to earn a piece of heaven from Magbanua. One could really conclude that Charles “The Dentist” Adelson has messed up Garcia and Magbanua’s lives in several respects.

Luis Rivera could be in “The Journeyman” category. Luis “King Tato” Rivera is a Crown member of South Florida’s Latin Kings criminal underworld. This Latin King status allowed him to source “ghost guns” and to access “local logistic” from local Tallahassee goon. King Tato gave Sigfredo “Tuto” a gun he “got from the street” for the Dan Markel murder. Although both King Tato and Sigfredo “Tuto” were out of their territory in the Big Bent Area of Florida Panhandle, they easily sourced Mr. Nobles to procure drugs, to give them a ride to Auto Parts shop, and to book hotel room for them.

Perhaps, the underworld notoriety of “King Tato” helped police identify him from screenshots of video surveillance clips while enlisting the resources of police local intelligence networks (FBI informants) in South Florida. Since “King Tato” was already in Federal Prison in 2016 serving his RICO conviction, investigators flipped him to reveal “The theory of the crime” (see his PCA) that “The dentist hired Katie, Tuto and him to murder Dan Markel because The Lady (allegedly Wendi Adelson) wants her children back”.

The scary thing is that the modus operandi of the successful Hit Men in “The Master” category is much mysterious as understudied by the Criminology literature for lack of data and cultural diversity. Described in the attached literature is a rare review study of Hit Men within British culture.

In the US, an informative example of real life Hit Man is the case of Richard “The Iceman” Kuklinski (sounds KKK, his real name). The Iceman’s persona is the most revealing case in “The Master” category as the FBI was able to join the dots of his many hits after he got caught. Further, he volunteered to speak publicly on camera (YT videos) while in LWOP in federal prison.

In the Russian culture, the unsolved murders by defenestration and poisoning reported by the news media open a little window on their Hit Men’s modus operandi. Perhaps, defenestration and poisoning are just the tip of an iceberg.

The fictional literature abounds of nasty Hit Women in “The Mistress” category (pun intended). Perhaps, they are so successful to the point of going under the radar of law enforcement in many cultures.

I doubt "a professional" would take the risk of working for CA. From my aforementioned post..sadly "hitmen" are very real. As with so many criminals, it is never their first time. CA was too flashy, odd, cocky and "Mouth of the South" lacking in self awareness. However, I can see someone leading CA along just to take his money.... he is sloppy and arrogant in thinking everyone was enamored with his money and brilliance. People can appear to be clever, but actually do stupid things. I have wondered why/how CA , a periodontist, knew so much about LE/investigative techniques ie "The Bump?"
What has improved?
IMO it is LE's ability to go high tech: CCTV's, computers, wire taps, financial assessments etc.
This was a horrible crime, however the physical evidence usually presented or exhibited to a jury did not exist: No fingerprints, No DNA and No weapon were found/used to solve the murder of DM or garner 4 convictions, so far. Interesting, huh?

Yeah I was just about to say the majority of hitmen are gonna be complete bozos like LR/SG not some highly trained ex special forces hitman..

Or police informants. In many, many cases, to my understanding, the person someone approaches and asks “do you know anyone who can get this done” then goes to the cops, and the cops send an informant posing as the person’s “contact.” In my opinion, this is what Katie should have done.

Yeah, except KM was too greedy and cold blooded. And now she sits right where she needs to be for good.

…do you think it was preplanned for CA to get off on appeal with Rashbaum taking on Donna?
Nah I don't think so. DR was chasing $$ and his 15 minutes of fame. He couldn't care less if DA and CA are free or doing life.
