but I think the killer knew her & was invited there & the gift was possibly for him and that's why he took it with him ... wonder if it was engraved ... wonder if he was married ...

I think the killer lived in the neighbourhood and that's why he didn't need his car keys - was able to run home and had a spare set at home anyway ... or even if he drove & parked a few blocks away, was still able to escape and retrieve his car later on

I suspect the killer knew Jan as well ... JMO

ETA: deleted sentences about the watch, as I see now that the babysitter actually lived there

ETA 2: deleted another sentence as I see nothing about Jan walking in as the killer was exiting on the AMW website

The assailant(s) removed the following items from the premise, prior to their escape. Square case, Seiko, men’s gold watch. The following words are Inscribed on the back of the watch, “To Randy, Happy Birthday, 5/11/90, All my love, Lisa”. Florida drivers license, in the name of Lisa Story, and a credit card in the name of Lisa Story.

Randy must have been Lisa's boyfriend.

VIDOCQ INVESTIGATION FINDINGS
They think a person or persons entered the townhouse through a sliding glass door, then climbed the stairs to the bedrooms.

They believe the killer or killers found Lisa Story first and quickly suffocated her with a pillow.

They think Robin heard a noise and came to investigate, and that she was silenced with blows to the face and then suffocated.

They believe that while ransacking the place, the killer found a pornographic magazine and a sex toy belonging to Story, and then violated the bodies of his victims.

Society members were intrigued by the pornographic magazine, and by the fact the killer apparently perused it near the foot of Story's bed. It might have prompted his post-mortem burst of sexual violence, they said.

"It fits a certain deviant profile," said psychologist Walter. "In the minds of some killers, the murder isn't over until they say it is over. I hope the Cape Coral police will explore this fully."

The briefing prompted a host of questions:

Footprints in the bathroom suggested the killer might have taken a shower. Were the drain contents collected, someone asked. No, came the answer.

Was the neighborhood canvassed? Yes.

Were stolen credit cards used? No.

Were phone records carefully examined? Yes, but a better job could have been done, Garrett answered.

Toyota car keys were found on the scene. Were traffic records checked for possible stops of a Toyota around the time of the crime? Yes.

Lisa Story and Jan Cornell worked together at Cape Coral Hospital. Were those connections, and their friendships and relationships, thoroughly explored? Yes, Garrett said.

Jan married the boyfriend she visited the night of the homicide and has taken his name, but asked that she be identified as Cornell out of concern for their safety.

Jan also had another daughter who must have been older. She wasn't mentioned as living in the house.

Jan went to a psychic with members of Story's family, but didn't think much of the result. "It cost us a lot of money to feel dumber," she said.

I have an incredible amount of respect for the VIDOQ society, and all LE in fact. I am thrilled Walter did the profile and I am interested to read that there was a second set of DNA etc found at the scene. I wonder if Walter and the VIDOQ society knew that when they visited the case or if they simply believed it was a crime likely committed by more than one?

This is very energizing!!! I wonder when the profile will be back??

At least now we know that the vehicle was a Toyota. :)

So I was doing some reading on Toyota and ignition cylinders. Dealerships will cut new keys to replace lost ones if you have DL, registration and title to the vehicle.

Of course, the killer(s) may have had spare keys....

"Cornell said she then became vaguely conscious of footsteps in the house, then more footsteps, "a lot of footsteps." But she acknowledges today that her memory of the footsteps is uncertain."

This is from Jeannie's link...this was what I was referring to when I made the statement about Jan believing someone ran out of the house...my mistake.

So there was a crushed ring? There is a lot here to work with, no wonder LE believes they can put it to bed.

I wonder if Lisa was the intended victim. Everything taken belonged to her. Who was Randy?

Will they release the profile to the public? It is interesting about the second set of DNA. I wondered about that too. This was the first time (I believe) that a smashed ring has been mentioned.

Of course, the killer(s) may have had spare keys....

That would mean either he had to show the registration, etc to have a key made, hot wire it, have a friend who is a locksmith, or go to Toyota.

One other option on the key that I just thought about. I had a car that they gave me a blank for. If I ever lost my keys I could use that to make a key.

I'm with you on the Vidoq Society. They are something else! They have a member for each year they have existed. So each year they add one more. Invitation only to join. Quite an honor! They amaze me.

Not being directly involved seems to allow them a more objective point of view and they deal strickly with the facts not the emotions of the families. That has to help too.

LE has to deal with the active scene and families and that has got to be one of the hardest jobs in the world! I believe they try their best. Of course some are better than others but I do believe they wouldn't do that job if they didn't intend to solve crimes. It takes dedication.

I certainly hope they can solve this. Not only Robin's family but Lisa's deserve to know what happened and someone needs to pay for these murders.

One statement by the Vidocq Society intrigues me:

I wonder what they meant by that? Could there be others?

:rose: Lisa and Robin are our Featured Cold Case from 7/31 to 8/6/2011 :rose:

I think one interpretation might be that the killer is still involved in this case somehow. Inquires about it, stirs people up about it, sees the principals regularly.
