I wonder if Drejka was provoking the fight after it started, as per his usual self. jmo moo

I doubt it. Thus far, it appears that another inmate made a lethal weapon with a lock and a sock. Sounds like a revenge attack. I wonder if perhaps it was an ordered 'hit'. I hope the investigation is thorough although I'm as skeptical as Trevena regarding FL DOC.

Trevena called the statement and its lack of details, “laughable." The Department of Corrections, he said, “is incredibly inept at protecting inmates.

“There are frequent attacks and beatings resulting in inmate injury and sometimes death,” he said. “Sometimes the correctional officers are complicit in these attacks.”


He was separated from the other prisoners and prison officials are reviewing whether to place him in protective custody.

Editor’s note: In an earlier version of this story, Drejka’s attorneys said he was being held in protective custody. State officials say they have not yet made that decision.

Prison inmate attacked Michael Drejka over death of ‘brother’ Markeis McGlockton, report says

The inmate accused of attacking and injuring Clearwater parking lot shooter Michael Drejka said it was in retaliation for the death that landed Drejka in prison: Markeis McGlockton.

Benjamin Martin struck Drejka with a combination lock attached to a sock on Feb. 11 while both were inmates at Lancaster Correctional Institutional near Gainesville, according to a Florida Department of Corrections report obtained by the Tampa Bay Times.

Martin, 31, of St. Petersburg, told prison officials he attacked Drejka because he “shot and killed his brother Markeis McGlockton on the street," the report said. But prison investigators said they’ve found no record that Martin is a relative of McGlockton, a 28-year-old father of four from Clearwater who was killed in a 2018 dispute over a parking space.

After the attack, Martin was placed in a disciplinary cell and faced prison sanctions on charges of aggravated battery on an inmate and possession of a weapon. Prison officials didn’t respond to questions about Martin’s current state of confinement, whether he was disciplined and whether he will face criminal charges in the Feb. 11 attack.
