PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) -- Two senior prosecutors who specialize in homicide have been assigned to the case of the 12-year-old Florida girl whose body was found in a creek days after she went missing.

But little else has been made public about what happened to Naomi Jones between May 31 when she was last seen and Monday, when two fishermen found her body.

The Pensacola News Journal (http://on.pnj.com/2rJyBFW) reports police have questioned two people on interest in the case. No one has been charged in her death.

:please:praying police get the person(s) responsible. This is too heartbreaking. :tears:

No new info that I've found yet..I am so thankful Naomi was found when she was, because we had torrential rains, for hours, last night and flooding -I'm sure that creek has risen even more. I'm going to the candlelight vigil being held tonight at the Tabernacle, directly across the street from where she was found. There will be another vigil/memorial at the Olive Baptist Church, the staging area for the search, tomorrow night.

Ths is the homicide showing up on the arrests: http://wkrg.com/2017/06/07/pensacola-police-make-arrest-in-2013-murder/

I thought I read that there was 2 POI, but no charges have been filed against them. So no one that is on the arrest roster is either POI. Is that not correct?

[h=1]12-Year-Old Missing Florida Girl Found Dead, Last Chatted With Friend On Facebook[/h]
The body of a 12-year-old African-American Pensacola, Florida, girl, who went missing last week after chatting with a friend on Facebook, was discovered Monday in a creek, reports The Pensacola News Journal.
Jones, who had graduated from fifth grade at Ferry Pass Elementary School, disappeared from her apartment complex on East Johnson Avenue on Wednesday, writes the news journal. Cops have not released a timeline of events detailing what happened to the young girl from the time that she went missing to her death.

Divers for the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday continued to search the creek for evidence. First Judicial Medical Examiner’s Office said that examiners also began an autopsy, writes the publication.

“She was looking forward to going to middle school, and she wanted to be a cheerleader,” said Ferry Pass Elementary School Principal Rhonda Shuford, writes the News Journal. “She was a very happy student and energetic, she was very caring about her family.”

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office doesn’t have any suspects in the homicide investigation of 12-year-old Naomi Jones.

At a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Sheriff David Morgan says preliminary reports show Jones died of asphyxiation (suffocation). Morgan said he had hoped to have suspects in the case at this point, but as of now, there are only persons of interest in Jones’ death.

Sheriff Morgan revealed that Jones was using multiple social media apps, including Marco Polo, to communicate with individuals online. Those exchanges were said to be sexual in nature, and may have contributed to Jones’ disappearance and death.

Twelve-year-old murder victim Naomi Jones of Pensacola died of asphyxiation within 24 to 36 hours after her disappearance on May 31, Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said Wednesday.

Morgan said there are no suspects in the case, although there are currently three persons of interest.

"I wish he had good news -- that we have definitive suspect and someone we are seeking a warrant on to bring into custody," the sheriff said. "But we don’t."

One of the previously mentioned persons of interest in the case has been cleared, he said.

Morgan said, "Are they suspects? No, they are not. They are people who had association with Naomi."

It was also stated at the news conference that the child's*immediate family and extended family have been cleared.*

Morgan said it’s believed Naomi was transported from the area where she was taken.

The sheriff said Naomi was known to be a scrapper -- someone not likely to leave with or talk to a stranger. Based on that profile, he said, it's believed she was likely approached by someone she knew.

Law enforcement has received some 300 tips in the case and served 35 search warrants.

Naomi Jones was likely killed within the first 24 hours to 36 hours she went missing.

Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said in a press conference Wednesday that Naomi likely died by asphyxiation, based on the preliminary autopsy results.

ECSO investigators are continuing to speak to several people of interest, but Morgan stressed that does not mean they are considered suspects.

No family members are considered people of interest, Morgan said.

"Those individuals, to the best of our abilities at this time, we have no reason to believe they are involved," Morgan said.

The FBI will continue to play a role in the investigation and ESCO has requested the services of their behavioral science unit.

“Since the investigation started there have been more than 200 law enforcement officers on the ground, more than 300 interviews were conducted and 30 search warrants were issued,” Eddins said.

Naomi disappeared after and her siblings returned home from an afternoon walk on May 31. She left behind her cellphone, keys and purse at her home.

Naomi’s mother, Shantara Hurry, told WKRG News that it was her son who first called her, telling her Naomi was missing. “I rushed home from work to find my daughter … and she was nowhere to be found.”

Morgan told WKRG News that investigators believe the girl last had contact with a friend over Facebook before disappearing.

Officials have not delved into details of Naomi’s death. Jeff Martin, director of the First Judicial Medical Examiner’s Office, told The Pensacola News Journal on Tuesday that they expected to complete her autopsy by the end of the day and would only release the results if it didn’t jeopardize the ongoing investigation.

I have a friend, retired LE whose niece's daughter is related to Naomi's family. :(

Oh man :(. What is Marco Polo??? I have never heard of that app.

Wednesday a vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the Deliverance Tabernacle Christian Center on West Detroit Boulevard. Thursday, another vigil will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the Mount Olive Baptist Church. Jones' family has requested that those attending this vigil bring pink and white candles. This will be the public's only opportunity to meet the family, as the funeral service will be private.
