Mum of 11 admits to starving 13-month-old to death

A 47-year-old Florida woman avoided a first-degree murder charge by pleading guilty to felony aggravated manslaughter in the starvation death of her 13-month-old daughter in 2016.

In accepting the plea deal on Monday (local time), Kristen Meyer also agreed to testify for the prosecution against her 42-year-old husband, Alejandro Aleman, the Palm Beach Post reported.

Meyer’s deal included a 23-year prison sentence, with credit for the four years she’s been in jail.....

The family came to Florida from suburban Chicago and had nine other children — ages 15, 13, 11, 8, 7, 6, 5, 3, and 2 — when the child died. Meyer had an 11th child in September 2016.

The Department of Children and Families had been following the family since 2013 and an internal review concluded “there were missed opportunities” to intervene, records show.

As part of the deal, Meyer will seek mental health treatment in prison, public defender Carey Haughwout told the judge.

Prosecutors dropped charges of aggravated child abuse and animal cruelty that Meyer had been facing.

Status Check Hearing (@ 8:30am ET) - FL - Tayla Aleman (13 mos.) (April 1, 2016, Loxahatchee) – *Alejandro Aleman (38/now 42) “Dad” arrested (9/26/26) & charged (9/29/16) & arraigned (10/21/16) of 1st degree murder, aggravated child abuse & cruelty to animals. Plead not guilty. $60K bond, no bond on murder charge. DA will seek the DP.
Trial was set to begin 8/19/19-motion to continue granted 6/28/19. No date set.

9/30/20 Update: Status check hearing was rescheduled on 11/18/20. 10/27/20: Agreed Order to house witness in the Palm Beach County Jail. 11/10/20: Agreed on Order. 11/12/20: Status check hearing on 11/18/20 was cancelled & rescheduled to 1/13/21.
*Kristen D. Meyer-Aleman (43/now 46) – Plead guilty (plea deal) to felony aggravated murder & sentenced (10/26/20) to 23 years in prison. And with plea deal will testify against her husband.

Father charged in toddler's starving death takes plea, gets 20 years

WEST PALM BEACH — Alejandro Aleman, accused of starving his 13-month-old daughter in 2016, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of aggravated manslaughter of a child Wednesday morning, following his wife's plea in October.

Aleman, 43, was sentenced to 20 years by Circuit Judge Cheryl Caracuzzo. He was given credit for the nearly five years he's spent in custody awaiting trial.

Kristen Meyer was sentenced to 23 years in prison in exchange for testifying against her husband.

If Alejandro Aleman had gone to trial and was convicted in Tayla Aleman's death, a jury would then have decided if he should be sentenced to death.
