The "doing more with less" argument doesn't work, especially when the agency is chronically understaffed for decades.

If you need more people, you have to hire them, not borrow them from here, there and yon. They're highly skilled protection agents, not grocery store security guards. JMO

You either professionally staff a critcal agency or you go the cheap route and end up with problems.
I didn't say anything about doing more with less. And why can't the Secret Service ask for help from other federal agency's. They do it all the time with local and state LE.

Using even local police to help with the golf course perimeter would have worked. So far the Secret Service can't seem to figure out how to do it's job and that's a really big problem. JMO.

Another thing to consider is the would be assassin was allowed to escape by the highly skilled protection agents of the Secret Service.

It was local LE who did an excellent job in apprehending him.

They already do ask for help from other agencies, etc. They've stretched that about as far as they can.

In addition to staffing shortages, longer hours worked, more people to protect, the scope and number of threats has also increased.

This article provides a pretty good summary

Let's agree to disagree.

Have you seen how large that golf course is? They're not superheros who can fly around like spider man. Seriously, Trump needs to start providing his own security at his own golf courses. Taxpayers shouldn't have to pick up the tab for that. JMO

Here is something to ponder. The SS is very capable of utilizing outside agencies ( local and state/county LE) in an urgent, un-planned situation. Case in point....Las Vegas this summer, President Biden had an urgent medical emergency. He was quickly whisked away, additional agencies were called to assist with road blocking and securing areas to get him safely to a hospital in Vegas. A sudden change of plan, mid route to the hospital, the services were then instructed to now travel to the airport, get him safely on a plane and head back to DC. All of this was done quickly and successfully on the fly, with multiple agencies involved and with much thanks and gratitude.

So, yeah......why couldn't they think on the fly in WPB?
I don't think that those two situations are really comparable. Emergencies trigger a whole different level of collaboration between agencies. Choosing to play golf at the last minute is very different to needing urgent medical care.

Taxpayers need to get their monies worth out of their government. That means providing the needed protection to all presidential candidates so they are alive on election day.

JMO.

And also thanks to a concerned citizen who saw, took photos and called LE within minutes. A true hero. Without him/her Mr Routh would be in the Ukraine no doubt.

If the Secret Service had not been such a failure in providing President Trump with adequate security there would be zero talk about how it's his fault that this assassin got so close to killing him.

All I see is deflection from the real problem. The Secret Service. JMO.
I think whether he has any responsibility here is a fair question considering he is the only one having such a problem with inadequate security and that the latest incident happened on his own property, which he had every opportunity over the years to secure better considering he is supposedly a billionaire with the funds to do it.

Very true.

I find it sad that a civilian was the only one monitoring the perimeter and not any kind of LE. JMO.

I think the question why President Trump is the only candidate being attacked and his protection has failed twice in as many months to be very concerning.

I hope that Congress finds the answers to why. JMO

For a normal amount of protection, I agree. But when a protectee makes arbitrary demands, especially for recreation activities, that stretches the assets of the SS, they're usually told they shouldn't take those risks. If a protectee decides at the last minute to go play at his own golf course and there aren't enough agents available to provide adequate coverage, he should schedule the golf for another time, when SS has time to recruit outside help.

It's common sense. If he insists on going anyway, in spite of SS warnings, he's taking the risk not only for himself, but for the people who have to protect him. How hard is it to schedule these things in advance so adequate coverage can be arranged?

These people are professionals who work for the federal government. They're not personal security guards he can order around like his own employees.

Golf is not a medical emergency!

A hallmark of our country should be that excellent protection is afforded to any and all who are running for president. Full stop. Post-1963 assassination and post-1981attempt there should be full funds available to said candidates and officials. The only caveat here would be that the candidates and officials MUST always acquiesce to the guidance of the agency sworn to protect them. The people running are equally responsible to ensure the safety of the people protecting them by letting make the calls. Once a politician is in this position, they should not be able to do whatever they like whenever they like because it impeds protecting them. Not saying Mr. Trump created situation here in any way. But the failure in Butler, PA indicates that there is a need to restructure to insure his well-being. As an American public, our tax funds should be used to maintain the well being of candidates. But it is important to be clear that this is not a blank check for coverage or permission for any candidate to push for money for everything they wish to do in the private time. Once a person is president, it seems like there are always rampant opinions on what they do or where they fly. I think that has some merit. IMHO, they deserve to be protected because they are vital assets but it has to be done with a mind of the private activities and costs to the taxpayer.

NO! Just no! There are limits to what SS or any part of our government can control.

Unsure about your emphasis. There are limits to what any agency or human can control but excellent security with keeping these people alive at any cost seems to be an easy goal, JMHO.
