This is sad. Self serve buffets are not likely to return, ever.

Coronavirus: Sweet Tomatoes permanently closing 97 restaurants

Trying to think of other restaurants/businesses with buffets as part of their business model

Golden Corral
Drury Inns (have free buffets, open soda bars for folks who stay there)
per googole

What about all the hotels that had self serve continental breakfasts.

It is going to have to return to prepackaged items I think. Like what you get out of a vending machine. Either that or they’ll have to hire food prep staff to make to go boxes. I can’t imagine hotels going to that effort. The whole premise of a hot breakfast at a hotel, was to get you to stay there. Now, so many hotels offer that, it isn’t a novelty.

The to go product companies are one of the big winners in this mess. Lots of foam packaging, plastic dishes, utensils, packaged condiments, etc.

Probably back when Disney was sending a file over to be uploaded into the database, I’m sure some people still had hours. It was probably best to send everyone rather than actually figure out who didn’t need it. They have a skeleton crew there to maintain plants, buildings, pools, etc.

My kid just got approved for UI on May 9th. They are retro paying her for 4 weeks. She could never get on the system and finally sent in paperwork. They did not even look at the last 2 weeks of March. They must have picked the day they got her paper application as her start date. She had 1 day in April that they gave her 5 hours. She sat on the phone trying to get thru and it kept hanging up on her, stating they weren’t taking calls. So she can’t even reach them to report hours worked!

Yes. As we were trying to reduce the use of plastics, etc., this pandemic will make this problem even worse.

The problem I encountered was that UI is still using the same laws, for this pandemic situation, that they used previously. And UI laws were never intended for actually helping claimants.

An example, my Mother was disqualified from UI because she had quit a job 15 years ago. That disqualification was still on her claim. She needed requalifying wages to take the disqualification off of her eligibility. No problem for her, but it held up her claim until someone took off the hold.

There are lots of reasons why people may be ineligible for UI. Benefits are based on the first four quarters of the last five, in most states. Therefore, if you were not working last year, you don't have enough wages for eligibility.

Or wages were reported under wrong social Security number, one digit off, no benefits.

That being said, there are actually a lot of jobs open right now. So people who are not eligible, get busy. Grocery stores are hiring, hardware stores, trucking firms...or apply for assistance programs.

Disney World now accepting hotel reservations for July 1 or later

Although it’s still unclear when the park will reopen, Disney World says it will start accepting hotel reservations for July or later.

According to Disney’s website, guests can now make reservations for arrivals on July 1 and later. Previously, Disney World had stopped accepting reservations before June 1.
I remember when we were young adults (1980s) prior to being parents, a bunch of us would get 2-3 hotel rooms at Disney. We didn’t go in the park. We went to visit all the different pools, all the displays, the restaurants, bars, watch the parades, fireworks, Fort Wilderness campground had free Disney movies, etc. There is a lot to do without going in the actual theme park. We’d take a boat to the water park too.

Jaw drop. Well, of course, looking strictly at the data provided by the State of Florida, every thing is going great. Nothing to see here.

"Come enjoy the beaches." (Line from "Jaws").

(Off topic) has anyone had the new Shingles vaccine? I had my 2nd one on Monday, and am having a terrible reaction.

The new 'killed virus' vaccine? I've been thinking about getting it but have not done so yet. What sort of reaction have you had?

A lot of the time, UI claimants are part of the problem. They are frustrated with calling, not having money. So, by the time they actually get a person on the phone, they want to vent their frustration. Don't do it.

Thank the person on the phone.
Verify your information.
Answer questions politely.
Don't yell, or use profanity. Don't tell the UI claims rep that they are "idiots".

Have a pencil, paper, and your check stubs ready. Know the last three employers that you had, with dates of employment written down.

This should really be on the UI website.

I had like a "mini flu". And I have never had reaction to any shots. And admit that I thought people who "claimed" to get sick from flu shots were probably hypochondriacs.

I apologize for thinking that way. It was awful. Better now.

Good advice. These people are just trying to do their Job. It’s not their fault that the system is the problem.

Remember that lady that passed out while driving with a mask and wrecked? I have a feeling that lots of folks don't know how restrictive the air flow can be for a long time, and they could pass out or worse on a ride that makes a person anxious etc... and asking kids to wear a mask all day... herding cats.
In the FL heat no less!

I’m trying to wrap my head around what is going to happen if we have a major hurricane in the middle of this! o_O

At the very first inkling of a storm, quickly..very quickly... make a reservation at a hotel on the other side of the state if no relatives to stay with outside of your area. There's usually a free cancellation within 24 hours. I've done that before, and made each of a few days separate reservations as they each stand alone to cancel.

Years ago I was on a trip to visit family in Michigan. We were 2 hours from airport. The first inkling that we heard a major snow storm was coming, I made a few reservations at the airport hotel. When the BLIZZARD came, we were in our 4 wheel drive on the way to the airport to catch the plane before the blizzard hit. We were too late... flight cancelled. All local hotels were booked full by the time we arrived. Yet, we went to the hotel.. and we stayed at that hotel for 5 days as the airport didn't open until January 6th (we got out on the 7th).

It's the opposite from Florida, but same in that make the reservations EARLY and cancel if you don't need.

Five of Michigan's Most Memorable Snowstorms
5. The North American Blizzard of 1999

This is yet another storm that hit after a stretch of mild winter temperatures. Just after the New Year on January 2nd and 3rd of 1999, the Great Lakes Region was struck with blizzard conditions. West Michigan was hit hardest with up to 28 inches of snow falling along the Lake Michigan shoreline in South Haven.

In many communities, schools and businesses were closed for days. However, thanks to modern snow removal equipment and techniques, the state was able to get most major highways reopened within 24 hours of the storm. Airports didn’t fare as well. Detroit Metro left passengers stranded in planes on the runway for hours, and it was days before airports were running on time again at full capacity.

Thanks for the article. With Michael people really only had 2 days to get out. With projected landfall in any one of 4 states, everyone was waiting to see where it would go, and with that sudden turn it was too late for the people in its path. I just hope the counties and state are prepared as they say they are, and the shelters are safe so COVID19 won’t spread again.

I agree 1000% with you......
