A source with the GBI told 11Alive News on Sunday that the attempted abduction in North Carolina happened a few days prior to the August 11th disappearance of the 38-year-old mother, but would not go into any further details.
11Alive's Jerry Carnes said Monday morning that after talking to GBI officials, they said that while a light-colored SUV was seen in the area of the Cornwell abduction, and a similarly described vehicle had been seen near the attempted abduction eight or nine days earlier.
The attempted abduction happened near Ranger, N.C. A woman was walking near the Ranger Community Center when a silver late model SUV knocked her to the ground. A man approached the woman, but when another car approached them, the man fled.
The GBI stopped short of saying the two vehicles were the same.
In a Monday afternoon news conference, GBI officials released an artist's sketch of the SUV, and a sketch of a man who investigators were looking for in connection with the attempted kidnapping. He is described as a white male in his mid 20s with dark hair.

Three months after the reported abduction of a Blairsville woman, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Union Co. Sheriff's could release details today about a break in the case.
WSB News has learned that a that the recent escape of a Cherokee Co., North Carolina woman from her an abductor could shed new light on the disappearance of Kristi Cornwell.
On Saturday, the family auctioned off their lake-front vacation home to raise money for the search.
The three-bedroom Union County house, which has been owned by the family since 1958, garnered $355,000, Richard Cornwell said.
"That was a difficult thing to do, but something necessary," he said.
About 10 percent of the money will go the auction company, but the rest will be used in the search. The money will go to help pay for helicopter rentals, newspaper ads and 60,000 postcards mailed to area residents.
On Sunday, the family continued searching the Blue Ridge Mountain area via helicopter.

“I would say there is a great deal of similarities,” said Mike Ayers, special agent in charge of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s regional office in Cleveland.
On Monday, the GBI released a sketch of a possible suspect in the alleged Blairsville kidnapping and asked the public to help find a silver Nissan Xterra with tinted windows and a brush guard on the front.
The suspect, a white male in his mid 20s with dark hair, is also connected to an attempted abduction in Ranger, N.C., which is about 25 miles north of where Cornwell was last seen.
In both cases, the man in the SUV targeted women on remote residential streets around 9 p.m., Ayers said.

Still hope for Kristi Cornwell with new G.B.I. information

Special agent in charge of the G.B.I.’s Northeast Georgia Region Mike Ayers issued two pictures of a man and a silver Nissan SUV he was driving when he knocked a woman down and started approaching her August 2nd in Ranger North Carolina, 25 miles from Blairsville, where the former probation officer disappeared August 11th while walking on Jones Creek Road.
The incident in Ranger occurred around 9:00pm on August 2 while a woman was walking along a road toward the Ranger Community Center. A vehicle pulled up behind her and knocked her to the ground. A man got out of the vehicle and as he approached the woman, another car drove up and the man left.
As the man drove by, the woman, who was not seriously injured, saw his profile since the driver's side window was rolled down. She also noticed that the vehicle is a silver, late model SUV. The North Carolina State Patrol was notified and interviewed the woman, but no report was filed.
After media reports of Cornwell’s disappearance included that a white or light colored SUV was seen in that area of Union County the evening of August 11, the woman called the tip line to report what had happened to her.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into a possible link between a kidnapping in northeast Georgia four months ago and an attempted abduction about 25 miles away in North Carolina.
GBI spokesman John Bankhead says someone tried to kidnap a woman walking along a road in Ranger, N.C., on Aug. 2. He said the woman got away because another car scared off the suspect.

Person Who Took Kristi Cornwell Might Have Tried to Snatch Another Woman
Georgia Woman's Boyfriend Heard Her Abduction; Family Praying for Her Safe Return

Now, after nearly four months, investigators believe that a similar crime just days before might shed light on what happened.
On Aug. 2, another woman, who has not been publicly identified, was walking along a road in Ranger, N.C. -- approximately 25 miles from where Cornwell was last seen – when, she told investigators, a "vehicle pulled up behind her and knocked her to the ground," according to a statement released today by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
"The timing and the vehicle description involved in this incident indicates a possible connection to Kristi's disappearance," said the statement.
But the man was apparently scared off when another car approached the area. The woman, who did not immediately report the incident, did so only after hearing about Cornwell's disappearance and later helped authorities develop a sketch of the suspect.
