Boise Police Department News Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 30, 2009
Missing boy case now a Homicide
Wednesday, August 5th - Boise Police have received confirmation from the Ada County Coroner's officer that the body found in a canal Monday, August 3rd is that of missing 8 year old Robert Manwill, 8. Click here for the latest on, what is now a homicide investigation.

Comments from Deputy Chief Jim Kerns, Boise Police Department, 6:00 p.m. Media Briefing, Wed., Aug. 5, 2009

Good afternoon, I’m Deputy Chief Jim Kerns with the Boise Police Department. Standing behind me is the Chief of Police of the Boise Police Department, Michael Masterson.

The information we can release today is in cooperation with the Ada County Coroner’s Office. The expertise of the Coroner’s office has been a valuable new tool for investigators in this case.

The body of the boy found in the New York Canal on Monday was positively identified this afternoon as that of 8 year old Robert Manwill.

Preliminary results of the autopsy give us reason to believe 8 year old Robert Manwill’s death was NOT an accident.

The case is now being investigated by the Boise Police Department as a homicide.

There remains NO evidence that Robert was abducted by a stranger.

We believe we will determine when and how Robert died, and who is responsible.

We will hold those responsible for Robert’s death accountable for their actions.

Our focus today remains the same as it was on July 24th… on Robert… and to find answers to what happened to cut short the life of this little boy.

Because this is now an active homicide investigation, as with any investigation of this type, we will not be able to hold the daily news briefings we’ve held for the past eleven days.

This is now a criminal investigation… and our justice system demands criminal investigations, no matter how complex, be thorough and methodical.

Please understand, we cannot compromise legal procedures and the integrity of this very important case with the premature release of investigative details.

This investigation is proceeding with urgency, and more answers will be made available at the appropriate time.

Citizens have been incredibly supportive of our efforts… and we appreciate that support more than words can say.

Our local media has been very responsive in helping us keep our community informed.

Keeping this community informed has been an important strategy in this investigation. You will be notified as soon as we have another major announcement in this case.

Justice will not be denied for Robert Manwill.

Thank you.

Who killed Robert? "We will find out who did this"
01:44 PM MDT on Thursday, August 6, 2009
<snipped>
The case started to rapidly change on Thursday 30th. That night, police began searching the Jenkins' Boise Bench apartment, removing materials from the home, including cabinets, computers and more. Police also towed a vehicle from the complex.

The next day, just as thousands of volunteers were scouring the city, police announced a change in tone to the public. Kerns told the media that police believed Robert "was the victim of a tragic event."

Then, late in the day, police responded to a home on Southdale Street in Ada County, and began probing dirt in the home's backyard in some sort of search.

The next day, that search was abruptly called off - and very few details came out until the discovery of Manwill's body near Kuna in the New York Canal Monday.

KTVB spoke with the family of Ehrlick, Jenkins' live-in boyfriend.

Since the boy’s disappearance, he's been in and out of the hospital for unspecified treatments, according to family.

A vigil is scheduled to be held on Shoshone St. at Cherry Ln. It will take place Friday at 8 p.m., and the community is invited to attend.

Boise Police now say Robert Manwill's death was no accident and are now treating his case as homicide.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday evening, Boise Police Chief Deputy Jim Kerns said "Justice will not be denied for Robert." Kerns said the justice system demands investigations like this one be thorough and methodical.

He says the police cannot compromise legal procedures with the premature release of details.

Daniel Ehrlick, Jr. is the boyfriend of Robert's Mother, Melissa Jenkins. His father, Daniel Ehrlick, Sr., told CBS 2 that his granddaughter told him that his son is being treated at Intermountain Hospital - a psychiatric care facility in Boise.

Police have not named any suspects, and no one is in custody.

'10 days for a body to float to Cloverdale Road'
Story Created: Aug 6, 2009 at 10:28 AM MDT
Story Updated: Aug 6, 2009 at 10:42 AM MDT
<snipped>
Paul Devau, project manager for Boise Project Board of Control, says it is possible for a body to float the 14 miles from where Robert was last seen at his mother’s home, to where his body was found.

‘It takes about 10 days for a body to get from Boise to Cloverdale Road,” Devau said.

Ten days is the time from when Robert was last seen to when his body was pulled from the water near Cloverdale Road.

Devau also said there is only one set of body gates at Cloverdale Road and they were never dropped.

Devau believes if the body was severely decomposed, it would have been in the water a long time.

"The body would have been underwater for most of the time," Devau said.

Devau also said a body in the canal would not get tangled or stuck in any debris.

Unnoticed, it could have just kept on floating downstream.

Neighbors keep Robert's memorial safe from storm

Gina Guzzetta-Dalrymple spent the night in a tent on Shoshone Street, keeping an eye on Robert Manwill's stuffed animal shrine near his mother's apartment in Oak Park Village.

And with other neighbors, she covered the sidewalk memorial with tarps, protecting it from the storm.

"Because if it got all demolished, the Ronald McDonald house couldn't use the stuffed animals," she said. "That's where they're going, and if they got all moldy and demolished, they have to be thrown away."

While police now conduct a criminal investigation, the community continued with preparations for a public memorial for Robert Friday evening at 8 p.m.

"It makes me sad, but it's not surprising," said Gina of Robert's murder. "It didn't take a rocket scientist to see that something went awry."

During a news conference at Boise City Hall West, Robert's aunt Trish Burrill singled out those who found the boy's body and notified authorities. She said the family wanted to meet those people.

Robert Manwill's mother, Melissa Scott Jenkins, and his father, Charles Manwill, attended the press conference. His father, from New Plymouth, had custody of the boy, but he was staying with his mother in Boise July 24 — the night he disappeared.

The family also offered thanks to the many law enforcement agencies that have been involved in the investigation. Boise Police Department Deputy Chief Jim Kerns said Wednesday that the boy did not die in an accident and that the death was a homicide.

A candlelight vigil is planned for 8 p.m. Friday on Cherry Lane near Vista Avenue on the Boise Bench. A memorial service has also been scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Cloverdale Funeral Home, 1200 N. Cloverdale Road, Boise.

During a Thursday news conference at Boise City Hall West, Robert's aunt Trish Burrill singled out those who found the boy's body and notified authorities. She said the family wanted to meet those people.

The family has set up a MySpace page about the boy.

According to the site, Robert was a happy boy who loved to give hugs and dance to music on his MP3 player. Robert loved movies, especially comedies and slapstick humor. He loved cartoons, Transformers, Garfield and Harry Potter books. He thrived on reading, the Web site says, and was always at 150 to 200 percent of his reading goal at his school, New Plymouth Elementary.

"Robert's favorite thing to do was laugh," according to the site, which features numerous family photos of Robert enjoying birthday parties, Easter and Halloween ... Robert loved to meet new people and make new friends ... He loved life and people so much that he would run up to strangers and give them hugs. Although Robert did have a temper, most of the time he was the most happy and loving person that one will ever meet."

Stick to facts when explaining tragedy to young children
As the Treasure Valley mourns Robert Manwill, parents can take the opportunity to reinforce a message of safety.
Published: 08/07/09
<snipped>
The disappearance and death of 8-year-old Robert Manwill has been top of mind for many Boise-area families who have struggled to explain to their own children the details of what happened and why.

With details still emerging in the case, parents are challenged to stick to the facts and not allow their own fears to confuse or terrorize their children.

"We have to tell our kids the facts about the case, not about the dangers of the boogeyman as it regards Robert - at least not now - since we don't know if one was involved," said Barbara Miller Johncox of Boise, who has two sons, 12 and 8 years old, and a 3-year-old daughter. "We do need to talk about canal safety. (Tuesday) night when we saw Robert's picture on the news, I said, 'That little boy was found in a canal, and he was dead. And it's so sad that he is gone, because a lot of people loved him a lot.' They were quiet and thoughtful, and made a connection for themselves."

It's OK to tell your children 'We don't know what happened,' " according to Young.

And use this as an opportunity to reinforce a message of safety, Young said.

"My message to our kids is simple, direct and heartfelt: 'Never, never, never play in a canal,' " Johncox said. "I've talked with them about where the water comes from, the farms and pastures it travels through and all the bacteria, feces, broken bottles and dangerous things the water picks up along the way. It is like putting your body inside the hole of an outhouse. I've talked about how rapidly the water flows, and at times unexpectedly so, and how it is extremely hard to get out of one given the steep embankments."

Parents should be mindful of a child's age and level of comprehension when addressing questions or discussing facts.

Fundraising Efforts for the Family of Robert Manwill

Efforts to raise money for the Manwill family has become the new focus for neighbors and community volunteers.

The ongoing vigil outside the home of Robert's mother is now covered due to rain and wind, but people here remain steadfast.

According to Gina Guzzetta Dalrymple, the concern has changed to helping Robert's family financially, "because the family can't really afford to pay for the funeral services and it's a very high cost for everybody."

Dalrymple says she's hoping this effort will take some of the stress off the family, "I'm glad there's at least part of a closure -- that we know where his body is, and that justice will take it's course on whoever did this to him."

The money being raised will go toward funeral expenses and any remaining funds will go to the Ronald McDonald foundation in the name of Robert Manwill.

Praise for the community's support during the search for Robert Manwill, 8, of Boise, has come from all corners, and not only for the way people responded to the missing boy but also how the public rallied around the Ryan Stockdale family.

When police needed volunteers to help search for the missing boy whose body was ultimately found Monday in a canal, the public answered the call in an unprecedented way: more than two thousand people showed up.

And throughout Robert's ordeal, the public response has made Boise's finest proud.

"Citizens have been incredibly supportive of our efforts," said Deputy Chief Jim Kerns with the Boise Police Department. "We appreciate their efforts more than words can say."

Friday night marked two weeks since 8-year-old Robert Manwill was originally reported missing. Hundreds of community members showed up to honor the little boy and say goodbye.

"Robert is our little boy and now he is your little boy," said Trish Burrill, Robert's Aunt, as she addressed the crowd.

A number of Robert's family attended the vigil, thanking the community for everything they have done over the past two weeks.

Dozens of green balloons were released into the air in honor of Robert's favorite color.

"I think everybody grew to love Robert if they knew him or not," said Stephaine Mishler, a Boise resident who helped search for Robert since the beginning.

Many people who attended the vigil said they hoped it would help bring closure to not only the family but also everyone who supported the search effort and let Robert into their hearts.

"We are a strong community and I think tonight will help bring hope that if something happened to another child we would all be there," said Amber Jones, a resident of Boise.

Candles were lite and a moment of silence was heard before the crowd left.

The family of Robert Manwill speak out
August 7, 2009

A vigil was held for Robert Manwill Friday night in Boise. Earlier in the day, Robert's family addressed the public. Despite the latest news that police are calling his death a homicide, his family is sticking together.

The family says, in a way, Robert Manwill is finally home and for the first time since his body was found, they addressed the community.

"We also know that Robert is in your hearts and that you need closure just as we do," says Trish Burrill, Robert's aunt.

With Robert's mom and dad in the background, the family spokesperson offered words of thanks to the police department, investigators, and everyone whose let this little boy into their hearts.

"We as a family have given it much thought and would like you to meet Robert," she adds.

"To lay our sweet loving boy, Robert to rest with God," says Burrill.

Hundreds of teddy bears from Manwill memorial will be donated Saturday
Published: 08/07/09

More than 200 teddy bears that have been left at what has become a makeshift memorial site for Robert Manwill will be taken to the Ronald McDonald House on Saturday, according to the Boise couple who set out the first trio of teddy bears after the 8-year-old went missing July 24. The personal letters, photos and other items left in tribute to Robert will go to his family.

With each passing day, the number of teddy bears grew. Visitors left other items, including photos, cards and candles. It became a gathering spot for nightly vigils, with many lighting candles.

Gina Guzzetta-Dalrymple, 36, felt so moved to watch over the site — and keep the candles burning — that she decided to sleep in a tent next to it.

"I wanted to make sure the vigil stayed safe and secure," she said.

At about 6:45 p.m. Thursday, her third night watching over the site, Guzzetta-Dalrymple was arrested by police and taken away in handcuffs. :furious: She was booked into the Ada County Jail on two outstanding misdemeanor warrants for failure to appear in court. She posted bond and was out by midnight.

Guzzetta-Dalrymple said she is really angry about getting arrested.

"There's only a homicide (investigation) going on. Let's go after me," she said Friday. She said she planned to camp out again at the site Friday night.

Boy gets emotional tribute
August 8, 2009

As the sun went down Friday, hundreds huddled in a Boise to pay tribute and say goodbye to slain 8-year-old Robert Manwill.

Emotions grew high and candles burned brightly as families gathered near the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Cherry Lane and Shoshone Street.

Some wore green ribbons and ate green cupcakes while holding the same shade of balloons in honor of the New Plymouth boy's favorite color — even the candleholders were green.

Neighbor recalls boy
Neighbor Tori Oldroyd, who attended the vigil with her husband, Craig, said she saw the young boy the same day he disappeared:

"It matched up exactly with the time on the reports," she said.

"We have a puppy and I was outside with the puppy when Robert yelled back to his friends that (he) couldn't stay."

Holly Sheffield of Boise said she grew up with Robert's mother and felt she should pay her respects, coming to the vigil with two of her children and her cousin, Jeanette Brooks.

"I was amazed at how the community came together to look for Robert. It's sad it takes something this devastating to bring us together, but it's amazing," Sheffield said.

Range of emotions
No suspects have been named in the incident, but Boise Deputy Police Chief Jim Kerns said there is no evidence a stranger abducted Robert.

"I think that when a little kid dies, it brings together an entire community in a different way than when you hear about murders on TV," Pope said. "The scary part I think is that now no one knows, so there is someone who killed a boy out there."

Robert Manwill's mom followed steps in custody case
The state has a procedure to decide whether a child is reunited with family after possible abuse.
Published: 08/09/09
<snipped>
The case of 8-year-old Robert Manwill has raised two persistent questions:

Why did his mother get 30 days in jail, a suspended fine and probation for fracturing the skull of Robert's infant half brother?

Why was the baby allowed to return to his mother, who was still on probation for harming him?

Robert was found dead on Monday after being missing for more than a week. Boise police say they are investigating his death as a homicide. Robert spent most of his time living with his father in New Plymouth but was visiting his mother in Boise at the time of his disappearance on July 24.

2ND HEADLINE:
WHY DID MELISSA JENKINS GET THE SENTENCE SHE DID?
In March, Robert's mother, Melissa Jenkins, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor injury to a child after Robert's half brother, Aidan Ehrlick, then 8 months old, suffered a fractured skull in October and was placed in foster care.

3RD HEADLINE:
WHY WAS THE BABY RETURNED TO HIS MOTHER?
Jenkins and boyfriend Daniel Ehrlick had been working to get Aidan back since Jenkins' sentencing in March.

4TH HEADLINE:
WHAT'S THE STATE'S PROCESS FOR DECIDING CUSTODY CASES?
The Department of Health and Welfare treats every case of suspected child abuse individually, said department spokeswoman Emily Simnitt. But for any report of child abuse from any source, the state takes the same general steps.

5TH HEADLINE:
WHY WAS ROBERT ALLOWED TO VISIT HIS MOTHER'S HOME?
The presence of numerous children in a household naturally complicates custody issues.

Community Continues to Honor Robert Manwill

Before the green flag dropped and the cars were speeding around the track, there was a more somber mood at the Meridian Speedway. Racers and fans had a moment of silence to pay tribute to Robert Manwill and his family. Robert's mother and father were both there. Drivers also put green ribbons on their cars. On Robert's uncle Kyle Burrill's car was a poster of the nephew who used to watch him race.

"He loves it, he loves racing," aunt Trish Burrill said about Robert.

But until the community knows exactly who, or what killed Robert, they likely won't be able to put this case behind them.

The search for Robert Manwill is over, but the community is still reaching out in full force.

Neighbors Monica Dalton and Heather Fieseler weren't able to join any of the searches for Robert. But they still wanted to do something for the little boy and his family.

The laps represented the 11 days Robert Manwill was missing and was away from his family.

"This is something serious that some people just brush off like it happens every day - but us, it really hurt us," she said.

One stop along the route was the boy's memorial, where volunteers were still cleaning and getting ready to donate Robert's toys to the Ronald McDonald House.

While heading back to Jackons, getting ready to start the fourth lap for Robert, Fieseler says although remembering the little boy is their number one priority, they also want to remind all parents to keep a close on eye on their little ones.

Robert Manwill's funeral draws nearly 500 mourners
05:03 PM MDT on Sunday, August 9, 2009

With so many questions still unanswered, the family of Robert Manwill, and the community at large, sought closure Sunday afternoon at the funeral of the slain child.

There is nothing more tragic nor more difficult to understand than the death of a child, especially one complicated by homicide. Sunday was a tearful coming together of those who feel this loss the most.

"I believe Robert Manwill should be remembered as Boise's peace child. What began as a community search for a missing child and ended in the discovery of the tragic death of sweet innocent boy has brought an entire community together," said Pastor George Sova.

Sova also read letters from Manwill’s parents, detailing some of their memories of Robert and their desire to have his killer found. Manwill’s family and loved ones then released doves, which Sova said was a symbolic tribute to Manwill’s spirit.

“As Robert's dove soars over the horizon and out sight we can softly whisper, there. He is gone, but we can be sure that over that horizon, other's will look to the sky and joyfully exclaim, ‘look, here he comes’,” Sova said.

Sova talked at the service about the need to serve justice in this case.

“The search continues not for Robert but for his perpetrator and as we speak law enforcement agencies across the board are working diligently seeking to solve this horrendous crime against an innocent child... so that it will not end on a shelf of unsolved mysteries somewhere,” Sova said.

Police have not released any details about its investigation so far.

Hundreds Gather To Say Farewell To Robert Manwill
August 9, 2009

The family of Robert Manwill carrying his remains walks in to one of Robert's favorite songs. Two weeks after the 8-year-old disappeared from his home, he is being laid to rest. Family members welcomed the entire community to share in the life of the young boy who managed to capture the hearts of many. The ceremony honored the boy's life. The family full of emotion did not speak publicly but Robert's mother, Melissa Jenkins and his father Chuck Manwill wrote the last words to their son on paper. It was read by the pastor.

"Robert I will always love you and I will always be thinking of you. Mommy"

"Robert you were a little light in a dark and cruel world and you were taking from us long before your time on this earth should have ended", words of Chuck Manwill.

Robert Manwill touched so many lives and that includes the many people who knew him in New Plymouth. His teacher Christie Morales fought to hold back tears as she spoke about the young boy who loved to hug.

"And as for today we can assure that God and all his angels are getting lots of hugs from Robert. We love you and miss you Robert", says Morales.

Robert Manwill's family has stood behind police for weeks as they searched for the little boy. Again today, they walked together, this time slowly, carrying Robert's remains.

Pastor George Sova spoke for the family during Sunday's services.

"What began as a community's search for a missing child and ended in the discovery of a tragic, tragic death of this sweet innocent boy," Sova said.

The eight-year-old's teacher, Christie Morales was among those who traveled to Boise for the funeral, from his hometown in New Plymouth.

"When you spend seven hours a day, five days a week with someone, you get attached," Morales said. "Robert was one of my kids and it's not fair to lose someone so young."

Morales's words were echoed by Robert's mother, Melissa Jenkins and father, Charles Manwill, in letters, their last words to their son.

"You were a gift," Sova said. "Though it was extremely short, you will always be in our hearts."

Treasure Valley mourns 'everyone's child' Robert Manwill
Robert, surrounded by family, is buried with his grandfather and half-brother

Several hundred - including a contingent of the Idaho National Guard in dress uniform - turned out for the funeral at Boise's Cloverdale Funeral Home and Memorial Park, a small percentage of the thousands who searched, held vigils and found themselves connected to the child with a reputation for impishness.

Black-clad pallbearers carried a glass-encased urn containing Robert's ashes that sat in in front of the crowd. Sova called on those gathered to connect as a community with "an outpouring of love."

Sova read a letter from Robert's mother, Melissa Jenkins, and a fierce letter from his father, Charles Manwill.

Manwill also expressed confidence in members of the Boise Police Department and FBI, who are working to solve the mystery surrounding Robert's disappearance and death.

Family members, including Robert's siblings, kissed and whispered to white doves before releasing them to carry messages to Robert during Sunday's outdoor service. Raucous country music songs - Robert's favorites - also were featured.

The family and guests proceeded to a gravesite, where they buried the child with his grandfather and half-brother, Charles Manwill's son, Michael, who was stabbed to death in 1993 by another ex-wife.

Robert Manwill lived primarily with his father and stepmother, Afton, in New Plymouth.

He was visiting the Vista Avenue-area apartment of his mother and her boyfriend, Daniel Ehrlick Jr., when he went missing on July 24. Police, Idaho National Guard members and thousands of residents searched for the boy.

Ehrlick has been convicted of burglary, battery and possession of drug paraphernalia, and he is banned by the courts from being alone with Robert's half-sister.

Police seized vehicles and evidence from the apartment home, saying it appeared Robert was the victim of a "tragic event." Police also extensively searched the yard of a South Boise home rented by a friend of Ehrlick's family.

Family and friends of Robert Manwill, 8, attend his funeral service at Cloverdale Funeral Home in Boise Sunday afternoon. Robert's mother, Melissa Jenkins, right, is consoled by her mother Dorie Jenkins. Robert's father, Charles Manwill, left, grieves with his wife, Afton. The family was joined by several hundred people for an outdoor service. Many from the Boise community who helped search for Robert when he was reported missing July 24 attended the funeral.

Letters that were read at the funeral:

A letter from Melissa Jenkins to her son, Robert Manwill.

"Robert, it's Mommy.

I want to tell you I love you. Robert, I dearly miss you.

My favorite times with you were just laying on the couch watching 'Tom and Jerry.' Watching you play on the swings. Listening to you make silly raps. How you could eat ice cream and not make a mess is beyond me.

I loved to watch you jump in the mud puddles and go swimming.

But my memory that I will hold tightly is of you in the ocean. You were frolicking in the waves and shrieking with delight when I called for you. And so Mommy had to hold you and you screamed.

Then you had to go poo and you almost pooed on Papa's feet.

So as you go and make your journey to a wonderful place in Heaven, I will always remember you playing in the ocean, shrieking with such delight and joy.

Robert I will always love you and I will always be thinking of you.

Mommy."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Letter from Charles Manwill to his son, Robert Manwill.
"Robert,
You were a little light in a dark and cruel world. And you were taken from us long before your life on this earth should have ended.
I remember before you were even born, talking to your mom on the phone late at night and she would hold the phone to her belly so I could say good night to our little sunshine. That's the way it was even before we knew that you would be a baby boy.
You touched the lives of everyone you ever met with your exuberance for life. I would simply explain to them that you were 100 pounds of energy packed into 50 pounds of body.
I know that you were not in any way perfect, you had your faults just like the rest of us, from that annoying in-your-face attitude to your insatiable need to add your two cents to every conversation, even when you had no idea what we were talking about.
However, once someone met you, there was no forgetting the name Robert. Because someone was always yelling your name and telling you not to do this or not to do that.
Later, you had such a special way of touching people's hearts in such a way it was so easy to overlook your shortcomings and love you for just being you.
For hundreds of years, Philadelphia has been known as the 'City of Brotherly Love.' But these last two weeks have proven beyond any doubt that Boise is the City of Brotherly Love.
You have always had a large family, Robert, both immediate and extended. But over these last two weeks your family has grown by literally thousands of people.
I remember how when you would get into trouble or even when you simply didn't get your way, you would always claim that 'This is the worst day ever!'
You would say this over the most minor things that were truly laughable such as actually having to finish your homework, or writing your spelling words to practice your handwriting.
Son, July 24, 2009, was the worst day ever.
That is the day that someone ended the beautiful little man that you were.
My first reaction was to find the low-life SOB and make him suffer in oh so many ways for the horrible crime he perpetrated against you.
Mom Afton holds me back and reminds me that this family can't afford to lose another member in pointless revenge. Especially since it will not bring you back to us. And we need to let the police and the FBI do their job, a job that they do well.
We need to allow the justice system to do their job and bring the *advertiser censored* to justice.
You know, I am not a religious man. And many times I don't believe in God. But I do know and believe there is a special place in Hell for anyone who could hurt such a special little soul like you and rob the world of your shining light.
Rest assured, Robert, that while your remains are being held close to your grandfather's chest, with your brother Michael at your side, rest assured that the police will continue to work tirelessly until they are able to bring the justice you need and make the one responsible for taking you from us ... to the maximum extent that the law will allow.
I need you to know, Robert, we will never, ever forget the time we were allowed to know you. You were a gift, though extremely short. You will always be in our hearts."
Community says goodbye to young Robert Manwill
August 10, 2009
<snipped>
A tearful memorial service for slain 8-year-old Robert Manwill drew hundreds to the green lawns of Cloverdale Memorial Park to pay their respects on a bright Sunday afternoon.
The ceremony was punctuated by the release of dozens of white doves and some of Robert's favorite music, including country singer Trace Adkins songs and "Amazing Grace."
Sova acknowledged that the search goes on for the person who killed Robert and applauded the effort to find the boy.
"I believe that Robert Manwill should be remembered as Boise's peace child. What began as a community search for a missing child and ended in the discovery of a tragic, tragic death of a sweet innocent boy has brought an entire community together," Sova said.
"My prayer this afternoon is that as a community we will not let little Robert Manwill's death be in vain. Let us keep his memory alive with continued demonstrations of community connection, with outpouring of love and unity for and with one another."
After weeks of heartbreak, Robert Manwill has been laid to rest. He may be gone but Robert is surely not forgotten. In yet another emotional show of support, hundreds came out to pay their final respects to the community's lost little boy.
"He was lost and now he's found...he's going to heaven for sure," said Selena Ashby, who attended Robert's funeral.
"I was hopefull that it wouldn't come to this I wanted the little boy to be found and returned home I didn't want to see this," said Michelle Clifford who also attended the funeral.
To symbolize his spirit, Robert's loved one's released solid white doves. Then led a procession to the burial site where Robert's ashes will lay just above his grandfathers.
"We promise you that Robert will never be forgotten that's a guarantee," said Suezette Maderi who attended the funeral.
While many are calling this funeral closure for Robert Manwill, the investigation into his death is far from over. In Rober'ts Father's letter he expressed a need for justice...to find the person responsible. For now there are no suspects, although police have called his death a homicide.
Citizen volunteers train for emergencies in Pocatello
In the last few weeks thousands of people helped search for Robert Manwill, the missing 8-year-old Boise boy.
As part of an on-going training program, citizen volunteers in Pocatello were taught what they could do to help if a similar tragedy struck the Gate City. Brent Dustin, a new CERT Team Member said, "It can happen anyplace, anytime."
The mock emergency happening Tuesday is that a plastic baby is hidden somewhere in this field.
Members of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) are learning how to search a large area for clues. Judy Harris, a third-year CERT Team Member said, "You can learn so much out of a book, but you really need to do it to get the feel of it and the practice."
And the exercise was a success. The CERT team found all nine hidden items; including a handgun, knife, baby clothes, and victim. Dustin said, "The more training you have the better job you can do. You learn your teammates, your squad, what you're doing, and you have some idea of what to start on."
So far the CERT team has not been called out during an emergency, but the Police Department is confident team members are prepared if the need arises.
To become a member of the CERT team you need to pass a criminal background check.
Volunteers Train With Pocatello Police Department
Trained volunteers with the Pocatello Police Department were busy searching a field for evidence related to a crime Tuesday afternoon. Luckily it was only a training exercise.
The Pocatello Police Department has hundreds of volunteers that are part of their "CERT" program, or Community Emergency Response Team. The volunteers are trained in a number of different tasks to help the Pocatello Police Department in any different type of situation, from a missing person to a natural disaster.
Kim Ellis, Pocatello Police Department: "They're an invaluable asset. We could pay officers to come out here and sweep this field, or we could have them do the same type of sweep much easier and a lot less expensive to train them to augment and assist us."
The volunteers do this type of training every quarter.
DANIEL EDWARD EHRLICK (DE's Uncle!) #33510
Date of Birth: 11/09/1972
Discharge Date: 03/11/2002
The first one is DE Sr. - whatever case that he got sentenced to prison for does not come up on the Idaho Courts online search, presumably because the case is too old. So, I have no idea what crime he committed.
DE's was from his Felony Grand Theft. The Discharge date is the date at which they finished everything - prison time, parole and probation, etc.
There is also a David Ehrlick (discharged in 1995) on there, DOB 6/13/1955. I think he must be the Sr.'s brother, so DE's uncle. I'm pretty sure David Erhlick, the brother to DE, is younger than DE and is the one in the court records whose year of birth is 1979 and his middle name is Jonathan (and is also apparently the only Ehrlick who has thus far avoided prison)
Neighbors long to know about Robert Manwill investigation
Posted: Aug 17, 2009 10:14 PM EDT
<snipped>
The body of eight-year-old Robert Manwill was found August 3rd.
Now just a few weeks later, still nothing from Boise police as to a potential suspect in his murder.
And now some people in the neighborhood where the boy originally went missing are growing concerned.
"I think everyone's wondering what's going on with the investigation," said Megan Egbert.
Egbert lives just a few blocks away. She's hoping that soon there will be some news from police, if nothing else, but for a little piece of mind.
"The not knowing what happened and especially being close to here -- wanting to think our neighborhood is safe," said Egbert.
Others say they'd like to know, simply because of what they've already been through as neighbors. Many have been personally affected by the ongoing investigation.
"Yeah, it was kind of hard to deal with just because we kept having police come to our house. And like I said, we got searched twice, and the garage and everything. It was fine, we were willing to help and everything, so it was fine, but it was just kind of crazy for the last couple weeks," said Tana Loan, another neighbor.
But so far, detectives are keeping anything they might know very close to the vest.
What they have said has been scant -- that Robert was murdered, that it happened at the hands of someone he knew, and there were signs he was injured at his mother's apartment.
With nothing more to go on, the community is getting restless, and speculation is running wild.
"I think everybody has their ideas. There's a lot of speculation about the family environment -- previous charges," said Egbert.
"I think it should be dealt with, with the family and the police. And once they want to release a story, then they should," Loan added.
Father says son arrested in connection with Robert Manwill disappearance, death
Daniel Ehrlick Jr. has been arrested in connection with the disappearance and death of 8-year-old Robert Manwill, according to his father Daniel Ehrlick Sr.
Ehrlick Sr. said he doesn't know what the charge is or if anyone else has been arrested. Boise Police Chief Mike Masterson said he didn't have any information when contacted just before 6 p.m. Boise poice have planned a news conference for 7 tonight to announce a "major development" in the case.
Manwill's mother, Melissa Jenkins, has been staying with her sister and brother-in-law, Trish and Kyle Burrill, on and off over the past couple weeks. Kyle Burrill said Tuesday he has been at work and doesn't know where Melissa is.
Robert Manwill lived primarily with his father, Charles Manwill, and stepmother, Afton, in New Plymouth.
He was visiting the Vista Avenue-area apartment of his mother, Jenkins, and her boyfriend, Daniel Ehrlick Jr., when he went missing on July 24. Police, Idaho National Guard members and thousands of residents searched for the boy.
As days passed and Robert wasn't found, the Statesman reported that Jenkins and Ehrlick had lost custody of Robert's infant half-brother after Jenkins was convicted of fracturing the baby's skull. Neighbors said they saw Ehrlick home the night Robert disappeared.
Ehrlick has been convicted of burglary, battery and possession of drug paraphernalia, and he is banned by the courts from being alone with Robert's half-sister.
Police seized vehicles and evidence from the apartment home, saying it appeared Robert was the victim of a "tragic event." Police also extensively searched the yard of a South Boise home rented by a friend of Ehrlick's family.
Robert's body was found Aug. 3 in the New York Canal near Kuna.
The Ada County coroner's office said Robert's death was a homicide, and Boise police officials said the boy had not been abducted by a stranger.
Boise Police say the mother of Robert Manwill has been charged with first degree murder.
Authorities made the announcement Thursday evening at a press conference with Treasure Valley media.
Melissa Jenkins and her boyfriend, Daniel Ehrlick, was charged with murder as well. Daniel Ehrlick, 36, was also indicted for first degree murder and failing to report a death to law enforcement.
The 8-year-old boy was last seen outside the apartment where his mother lives in Boise on the night of Friday July 24. There's no evidence, police say, that Robert was abducted by a stranger.
His body was pulled from the New York Canal about 14 miles away Aug. 3. It was then when police say the case was now a murder investigation.
The Ada County Coroner's office said forensic dental information helped to positively identify the body found in the canal.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday evening, Boise Police Chief Deputy Jim Kerns said "Justice will not be denied for Robert," Jim Kerns, Boise Police deputy chief said earlier this month.
Police: Mother & boyfriend killed Robert Manwill
07:18 PM MDT on Tuesday, August 18, 2009
<snipped>
BOISE – Police say they know who is responsible for killing Robert Manwill: his mother and her boyfriend.
Melissa Scott Jenkins, 30 and Daniel Edward Ehrlick, 36 were taken into custody Tuesday afternoon – both are charged with first-degree murder. Ehrlick is also charged with failure to report a death to law enforcement, while Jenkins is charged as an accessory for failing to report Manwill’s death to law enforcement.
Manwill’s body was found in a Kuna canal on August 10th. Police said the boy was a victim of homicide and vowed to find his killer.
“Probably no other case in Boise history has touched so many people,” Boise Police Deputy Chief Jim Kerns said Tuesday night.
The boy was reported missing to police on July 24th. The community quickly responded, with posters featuring the boy’s face popping up all over town, and volunteers spending spare time searching for the child.
The boy’s date of death may now be in question. Kerns asked for the public’s help offering any details of the activities of Jenkins or Ehrlick in the week leading up to July 24th. Kerns did not take questions at the news briefing, which did not give the media a chance to ask follow up questions that may better illustrate particulars of the case – including why they believe Ehrlick and Jenkins are responsible.
The case started to rapidly change on Thursday 30th. That night, police began searching the Jenkins' Boise Bench apartment, removing materials from the home, including cabinets, computers and more. Police also towed a vehicle from the complex.
The pair has now been indicted by an Ada County grand jury, and are being booked into the Ada County Jail on the charges. Ehrlick will be held without bond, while Jenkins will be held on a $2 million bond.
Ehrlick and Jenkins appeared behind Kerns at each news conference until the day after Jenkins’ home was searched. Ehrlick has not been seen in public since. Jenkins was at the boy’s funeral and at a news event the day her son’s body was identified.
Jenkins has a past criminal history that involves hurting children.
On October 19, 2008 police said a baby boy had been injured. Jenkins was arrested and charged with felony injury to a child. The child suffered serious head injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The child was taken into the custody of the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.
Court documents say Jenkins hit her 9-month-old son's head on a surface. The infant suffered a fractured skull that caused not only physical pain, but mental suffering as well.
Since the boy’s disappearance and before his arrest, Ehrlick had been in and out of the hospital for unspecified treatments, according to family.
Kerns said the investigation into Manwill’s death continues – and says if anyone has information that may help them, to call Boise Police Dispatch at 377-6790.
Robert Manwill's mother and her boyfriend were arrested today in connection with the child's murder, Boise police announced this evening.
Deputy Chief Jim Kerns said Melissa Scott Jenkins, 30, and Daniel Edward Ehrlick, 36, are both charged with first degree murder.
Ehrlick also faces a charge of failing to report a death to law enforcement. Jenkins faces a charge of accessory to that crime.
Kerns did not discuss a time or cause of death.
Manwill, who lived with his father and attended school in New Plymouth, had been missing since July 24. His body was discovered in a Southwest Ada County canal Aug. 3.
Both Ehrlick and Jenkins were indicted on these charges today by an Ada County grand jury, Kerns said.
Ehrlick is being held on the murder charge without bond. Jenkins is jailed on the murder charge with a bond amount of $2 million.
Robert had last stayed with his mother and her boyfriend at an apartment near Vista Avenue on the Boise Bench.
The night he disappeared , the boy was visiting his mother, Melissa Scott Jenkins. The boy's father, Charles Manwill, has had custody of him since 2008.
Detectives ask that anyone with information on Robert or the suspects, particularly about their activities during the week leading up to the boy's disappearance, contact police through Crime Stoppers at 343-COPS.
The defendants will be arraigned at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday before 4th District Judge Deborah Bail.
"In the interest of a fair trial for those accused, we at Boise police now put Robert's case in the competent hands of the Ada County prosecutors," Kerns said.
Every law enforcement agency in the Treasure Valley, along with other Idaho agencies, the FBI and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children assisted in the 10-day investigation of the boy's disappearance.
Thousands of community members also joined in the search for the boy, last seen at his family's apartment complex in Boise. The case garnered nationwide attention.
Kerns said local, state and federal agencies invested 9,000 man-hours in the search.
"Probably no other case in Boise history has touched so many people," Kerns said. "The turnout of volunteers to search for young Robert was unprecedented in this community."
Boise Mayor Dave Bieter commended the work of the law enforcement agencies involved.
"While the presumption of innocence must be maintained, I hope and have faith that justice will be served in this case and that our citizens — who have shown incredible compassion in the face of tragedy — can begin to mend from the loss of Robert Manwill," Bieter said in a prepared statement.
Mother and Boyfriend Arrested For Manwill Murder
Updated: Aug 18, 2009 09:36 PM EDT
<snipped>
Robert Manwill's mother and her boyfriend have been arrested in connection with his murder. Here is a copy of the statement made by Deputy Chief Jim Kerns:
"Robert... as we all know.. is the 8 year old boy first reported missing from his mothers apartment on Cherry Lane in Boise, Friday night July 24th.
Probably no other case in Boise history has touched so many people.
The turn out of volunteers to search for Robert was unprecedented in this community.
The law enforcement effort to find Robert was equally massive and unprecedented.
9,000 man hours were logged by Boise Police, agents with the FBI, Idaho Probation and Parole agents, and other local, state, and federal police agencies... between the time Robert went missing July 24th to the time he was found ten days later.
When Robert's body was found, Monday, August 3rd... just over two weeks ago...the case went from a missing child to a homicide investigation.
At that time... I sent a strong message on behalf of Boise Police and all those in this community who were touched by the tragic, untimely death of this little boy...
that justice would not be denied Robert Manwill.
And now I can announce... that late this afternoon...
Boise Police arrested Daniel Edward Ehrlick, age 36, of Boise on a charge of First Degree Murder for the death of 8 year old Robert Manwill.
Daniel Ehrlick lived with Robert and his mother Melissa at the time of Robert's death.
Daniel Ehrlick is also charged with Failing to Report a Death to Law Enforcement.
Also... this afternoon... Boise Police arrested Robert's mother, Melissa Scott Jenkins, age 30 of Boise for First Degree Murder, in the death of her son, Robert Manwill.
Melissa Jenkins was also charged as an accessory for failing to report her son's death to law enforcement.
Both Ehrlick and Jenkins were indicted on these charges today by an Ada County Grand Jury.
Both are now in police custody and being booked into the Ada County Jail...
Neighbors Long to Know About Robert Manwill Investigation
Boise, Idaho -- The body of 8-year-old Robert Manwill was found Aug. 3. And just a few weeks later, there's still nothing from Boise police as to a potential suspect in his murder.
Now some people in the neighborhood where the boy originally went missing are growing concerned.
"I think everyone's wondering what's going on with the investigation," said Megan Egbert.
Egbert lives just a few blocks away. She's hoping that soon there will be some news from police, if nothing else but for a little piece of mind.
"The not knowing what happened and especially being close to here and wanting to think our neighborhood is safe," said Egbert.
Others say they'd like to know, simply because of what they've already been through as neighbors. Many have been personally affected by the ongoing investigation.
"Yeah, it was kind of hard to deal with just because we kept having police come to our house. And like I said, we got searched twice, and the garage and everything. It was fine, we were willing to help and everything, so it was fine, but it was just kind of crazy for the last couple weeks," said Tana Loan, another neighbor.
But so far detectives are keeping anything they might know very close to the vest.
What they have said has been scant -- that Manwill was murdered, that it happened at the hands of someone he knew, and there were signs he was injured at his mother's apartment.
With nothing more to go on, the community is getting restless, and speculation is running wild.
"I think everybody has their ideas. There's a lot of speculation about the family environment -- previous charges," said Egbert.
"I think it should be dealt with the family and the police. And once they want to release a story, then they should," Loan added.
