This Monday in Chambery the trial of Adrien Bottollier began. He is the alleged murderer of Mostapha Hamadou, murdered with 28 stabbings in Parc Verney. This is not the first drama that affects the Hamadou family. The brother of the victim, Ahmed, is one of the men missing from the Fort de Tamié.

The trial of Adrien Bottollier began this Monday, before the court of assizes of Savoy. He is being tried for murder and attempted murder. The 24-year-old psychology student is accused of having murdered with 28 stab wounds Mostapha, who was living on the street, in May 2015 at the Parc du Verney in Chambery. He acknowledges these facts but denies having stabbed another man seven months later in Thonon-les-Bains.

This Monday, the court will consider the psychological profile of the accused. In the courtroom, Mostapha's sister Aïcha is present, as a member of the family. A difficult ordeal for her, especially in the statement of the details of the facts. "I who refused to read the order ..." she explains, thinking about what her brother endured. "He agonized. He bled to death. I could not imagine such atrocity." Aisha admits her hatred for the accused, her sadness too.

"I finally saw the face of the person who murdered my brother," she explains. She sees him and learns about his past. Adrien Bottolier broke contact with his father, who mistreated him, cut himself following a chaotic love affair. "I see today that he's a sick man," says Aïcha. But there's no question of her feeling sorry for him: "I'm waiting for him to have a heavy sentence. I refuse to have him committed to psychiatry. Or else that he should be monitored, but in prison."

Aïcha explains that this tragedy has destroyed her family, "we're all so hurt... we're all in pain." This is not the first tragedy the family has faced: "we are cursed." Mostapha was also the brother of Ahmed Hamadou, one of the men missing from Fort de Tamié, a case in which the family suspects the possible involvement of Nordahl Lelandais.

10:11 am: Nordahl Lelandais, the alleged murderer of Maëlys, was taken into custody on Friday, February 7. According to initial information, this police custody is part of the complaint filed by one of his cousins in spring 2018. In her statement, the girl had testified that she had been assaulted by her older cousin, Nordahl Lelandais, in March 2017, a few months before the assassination of Corporal Noyer and the murder of Maëlys.

More precisely, the facts denounced allegedly took place on the day of the funeral of the father of the young girl, then aged 14. The teenager then pushed away Nordahl Lelandais, when he was forcing himself on her. Frustrated, the thirty-year-old from Domessin had then intimidated his cousin, threatening her with death if she spoke out.

Following a complaint lodged by this young girl who was then living in the Ardennes, the investigation was initially entrusted to the gendarmes of the Criminal Investigation Department of Reims.

11:29 am: According to information from the Dauphiné Libéré, Nordahl Lelandais was extracted from his cell in Saint-Quentin-Fallavier to be taken to the La Verpillière brigade, where investigators notified him of his placement in police custody. According to the Dauphiné Libéré, the police custody is expected to continue for part of the day.

Nordahl Lelandais has just left La Verpillière's unit under very heavy police escort. In a few minutes, he should be back in his cell at Saint-Quentin Fallavier. His custody has lasted about four hours.

For the time being nothing has filtered out as to the content of his statements. Nordahl Lelandais can only be put under investigation in a second phase, either during a further police custody, or during a second extraction with a presentation before the judge in charge of this case in Charleville-Mézières.

The investigating judges have closed their investigation into the death of Arthur Noyer. The prosecutor's Office in Chambéry. From now on, the prosecutor has a period of one month (11/1/19) to make his requisitions, the most likely being that the latter would request referral to the Assises Court. During this period, each party may also make requests or submit motions.
10/31/19 Update: The Grenoble Chamber of Investigation handed down a long-awaited ruling on Friday [Thursday, 10/31/19] in the Maëlys case: it did not grant Lelandais' lawyer's request to cancel a damning testimony for his client. This testimony on file is that of the former prisoner of the Saint-Quentin-Fallavier prison who, in isolation, was near the cell of the alleged murderer of Maëlys. This man had assured him that Lelandais had told him how he had raped and killed the little girl, with many details. "The investigating chamber considered that the psychological expertise remained on file but that certain passages should be cancelled, i.e. deleted. It also found that the hearing of the detainee implicating the defendant remained on file. The investigating chamber also annulled the prosecutor's supplementary indictment requesting the indictment of Lelandais for the rape of Maëlys and rejected all the other requests of the defence. The public prosecutor is studying the consequences to be drawn from this judgment" according to the public prosecutor of Grenoble, Eric Vaillant.
11/4/19 Update: Prosecutors appealed decision on not charging NL for rape that the Grenoble investigating chamber annulled (10/31/19) this request. Maëlys' parents and their lawyer Fabien Rajon demanded that NL be sent back to the criminal court for "assassination" and not for "murder", which would expose him to a heavier sentence: life-prison without any penalty adjustment [parole].
1/3/20 Update: NL is being prosecuted by a judge in Grenoble for the kidnapping & murder of Maëlys in August 2017, and by a judge in Chambéry for the murder of Corporal Arthur Noyer in April, 2017. Neither of the two Courts of Appeal in Grenoble or Chambéry wish to answer the question of a possible trial before the Assize Court this year. The idea of a single trial for both cases seems to be disappearing. Noyer's parents are firmly opposed to it. A first trial on the death of Noyer would be more likely. The parties are awaiting the conclusions of the examining magistrate of Chambéry. If they arrive at the beginning of the year, a trial is possible in Chambéry in the autumn. In Grenoble, the examining magistrate still seems far from giving his conclusions, which are indispensable for a referral of NL to the Assize court. Because there are more appeals in this case: there is the appeal of the defense, which has partly challenged the conclusions of the psychiatric experts, but also the testimony of a former co-detainee of his client. He (NL) lost that battle. There is also the appeal of Maëlys' parents who want NL to be indicted for rape & murder, and no longer for kidnapping & murder. The same request from the Grenoble public prosecutor's office, which was unsuccessful in its appeal to the examining chamber of the Court of Appeal & is now asking the Court of Cassation to arbitrate. The stakes are enormous for NL, the sentence being much heavier, but also for his lawyer. The conclusions of the Grenoble examining magistrate will therefore not be issued immediately. A French cour d'assises or Assize Court is a criminal trial court with original and appellate limited jurisdiction to hear cases involving defendants accused of felonies, or crimes in French. It is the only French court consisting in a jury trial.

Maëlys case and suspicions of sexual assault: lawyer for the little cousin of Nordahl Lelandais wants a single trial

The lawyer for the alleged victim will file a formal appeal to link this case to the Maëlys case. In addition, she believes that a single trial for all the cases in which Lelandais is involved would be more consistent.

This is yet another charge against Nordahl Lelandais. Voices are being raised in favour of its inclusion in the case of the murder of the young Maëlys, for which the former dog handler is the main suspect, in the same way as in the case of the murder of Arthur Noyer. A little cousin of Lelandais, Charlotte*, has filed a complaint for sexual assault for alleged facts dating back to the beginning of 2017, when she was 14 years of age.

Her lawyer, Me Caroline Rémond, who was invited this Sunday on Affaire Suivante, believes that the two cases should be linked. "In my opinion, he is more of a sexual predator than a serial killer," she said.

For the time being, and despite the fact that Nordahl Lelandais is a common denominator, this new sexual assault case remains dissociated from the Maëlys case. The reason for this is the geographical distance between the two cases: Charlotte's accusations are said to have taken place in the east of France, while the case of the girl's murder is being investigated in Grenoble, in the Isère region.

Moreover, the investigation into Maëlys' death is almost complete, and the addition of a new file could delay a possible first trial. However, certain details of the alleged attack may well be included in order to better identify the suspect's personality.

"I wouldn't understand if the two cases were not linked and I'm going to make a request for a formal indictment. We shouldn't have to delay the trial (Maëlys, editor's note), but today we know that appeals in cassation have delayed the end of the investigation, and Nordahl Lelandais won't be tried before 2021, which gives us time to add this case," the lawyer said.

Lelandais was held in police custody for several hours on Friday after Charlotte's accusations, but has not been charged. "This should be done in the coming days," predicts our guest.

With regard to the idea of a single trial that would bring together all the cases in which Lelandais is involved, Me Caroline Rémond believes that it would be a "coherent project".

"The expertises are the same, the course is the same, the sentences will be the same, there's no point in having several trials. We should be able to join the Noyer case with the others, Charlotte's case as well, and finally the judges should decide to do only one trial," she says.

Still on air, Me Caroline Rémond explains that Charlotte has very clear memories of her assault, which took place only a few months before that of little Maëlys.

"It was the day of her father's funeral, she was smoking in secret, hiding from her mother. Nordahl Lelandais tells her that he's coming to smoke with her. He has a sexualized behaviour with her, he touches her chest and then her buttocks before insistently touching her chest again," she explains.

Threats are also mentioned. "If you say anything, I'll kill you," Lelandais is said to have told her shortly after the attack.

"He sends her several text messages that are inappropriate, we are talking about his young cousin, she's 14 years old. She's afraid he'll come looking for her, so she replies to him. She's walled in silence, there's a family omerta. It is only when she discovers that other little cousins have been sexually assaulted that she decides to talk," according to the lawyer, who also defends the other two cousins in question.

The complaint that gave rise to this new case, and a potential indictment, was finally filed a few weeks ago.

The trail of Nordahl Lelandais has been ruled out in cases of unexplained disappearances in the Morgon and Jabron in the Hautes-Alpes and Alpes de Haute-Provence. According to several judicial sources, the extensive investigation carried out by the Ariane cell, which cross-checked all cases of unexplained murders, disappearances or "suicides" in France that could have been linked to the alleged serial killer, has yielded nothing as far as the Alps de Sud are concerned. It is known, however, that suspicions were strong, due to the geographical proximity and mobility of the former soldier. The two disappearances that could have suggested the involvement of Nordahl Lelandais were those of Monique Thibert and Kévin Fauvel. Monique Thibert disappeared on 2 June 2015 in the Morgon massif above Savines le Lac. Aged 65, she was hiking in this area and it was while descending from the Morgon peak that this mother of 3 girls, 7 times grandmother, simply disappeared. No body, clothing or bag has been found for the past 5 years despite the extensive searches that had been undertaken at the time. Kévin Fauvel disappeared during the night of 1st to 2nd April 2012 in Châteauneuf-Miravail in the Jabron valley. For 8 years now, the family has had no news of Kévin who would now be 37 years old. He was part of the Jansiac community above Sisteron where members live in autarky and reject the monetary system. On the day of his disappearance, he was supposed to hitchhike to Bretagne as he used to do. The fact remains that even if the trail of Nordahl Lelandais is definitively closed for these two cases, we still do not know what happened to Monique Thibert and Kévin Fauvel. The families reported failures in these investigations, yet they remain open despite the length of time they have been missing.

Nordhal Lelandais intended to kill Arthur Noyer at the time of the events, but he had not premeditated his action. This is the conclusion of the Chambéry public prosecutor's office, which has requested that Lelandais be tried before the Savoy Court of Assize for murder and no longer for assassination.

Earlier this week, the Chambéry prosecutor's office requested that Nordahl Lelandais should be indicted for murder in the case of Arthur Noyer, and no longer for assassination.

Initially indicted for assassination in December 2017, the 36-year-old defendant had admitted in March 2018 to a fight between him and Arthur Noyer that resulted in the death of the 23-year-old corporal, a member of the 13th Battalion of Alpine Hunters.

According to him, the events took place in Saint-Baldoph, near Chambéry, during the night of 11 to 12 April 2017, after taking the soldier from Bourges, for a ride outside a nightclub in downtown Chambéry.

The public prosecutor's office of Chambéry therefore considers that Nordahl Lelandais had an intention to kill Arthur Noyer at the time the events took place, but that he had not premeditated his action.

If the investigating magistrate follows the prosecution's final indictment in charging Nordahl Lelandais with murder before the Assize Court of Savoy, then the maximum sentence incurred will be reduced from life imprisonment to thirty years in prison.

Nordahl Lelandais is also being indicted for the murder of little Maëlys and for sexual assault on two little cousins.

The lawyer of Arthur Noyer's family said he was "surprised by the eagerness of the public prosecutor's office" to communicate its requisitions, according to France Bleu Pays de Savoie on Friday 14 February. The public prosecutor's office in Chambéry requested at the beginning of the week that Nordahl Lelandais be brought before the Savoy court of assizes for murder in the Arthur Noyer case, rather than for assassination. If the judge follows these requisitions, the notion of premeditation would disappear.

"I knew that with justice, you can expect anything...", Maître Bernard Boulloud, Arthur Noyer's family lawyer, reacts. "We learned [Thursday] the content of the requisitions from the public prosecutor's office and we are more than surprised by the eagerness of the prosecutor's office to make clear what the content of these requisitions is," he told France Bleu Pays de Savoie.

It is now up to the investigating judge to decide on the charge. If he decides on the murder charge instead of the assassination charge (which includes the notion of premeditation), Nordahl Lelandais will no longer face life imprisonment in this case, but a maximum of 30 years in prison.

"We have confidence in the investigating judge who knows the case perfectly well and who may perhaps have a different opinion from that of the prosecutor's office," says Boulloud. The lawyer announced a press conference in Bourges on Thursday 20 February to explain the family's position on the dismissal.

Corporal Arthur Noyer disappeared in Chambéry in April 2017. Nordahl Lelandais admitted to a fight that led to the death of the 23-year-old soldier. He was first indicted for assassination in December 2017. Nordahl Lelandais is also still under indictment for the murder of little Maëlys and for sexual assault on two young cousins.

The lawyer says that the family can live with the idea that after examination, the Courts decide that there was no case of assassination but 'only' of murder. Instead, if NL is tried for murder and not for assassination, the latter option will not be taken into consideration at all and THAT is unbearable for the family.

A little frustration, please bear with me.

I was checking names from what we here at WS call Niner's list (kudos, Niner!) in the hope to find any progress in the many unexplained disappearances and deaths that may or not may be related to NL.
There hasn't been a lot of progress these last 3 years: two of the missing have been found dead, the cause was suicide. One has quietly returned home, and his name was wiped from the internet. Nordahl Lelandais had nothing to do with either three.
No progress has been reported in any of the other cases, and no call for witnesses has been made in the two mystery cases of Edwige Ukundirwase and Pierre-Alexandre Seenyen. No pictures, no nothing. If anyone misses them, they are extremely quiet about it.

So I was checking names, going through virtual newspapers and all of a sudden I read that TWO of the missing have quietly returned home. The report did not mention who nor where nor why... not even the list they would have been on.

And I clicked on the next report, and now, for the love of mud, I cannot find the report where I read this.

The one person who returned home safe and sound is Sidney Font.
The other person who has returned home is not one of those who is still being sought actively. Not Eric Foray, Adrien Fiorello, Malik Boutvillain, Lucie Roux, Nelly Balmain for instance.

The other option is that the report that I can no longer find was referring to the Ariane list of 40 persons, and before that list was published, the investigators had already established that two of the alleged missing had in fact returned home, namely Alexis and Dogan. They simply hadn't informed the police.

This Thursday morning, the family of Arthur Noyer gave a press conference in Bourges following the request of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Chambery to reclassify the charge of Nordahl Lelandais from assassination to murder. Arthur Noyer's parents responded to questions of the Dauphine Libéré.

The family initially said they were "angry and confused" after discovering the direction of the final indictment in the press. The family's lawyer, Bernard Boulloud, said: "It is not in the code of criminal procedure, of course, but it was possible to warn the family by telephone given the media coverage of this case."

In his final indictment, prosecutor Pierre-Yves Michau said there was not enough evidence to support the assassination.

The prosecutor also believes that the lies of Nordahl Lelandais during the investigation do not support the theory of the assassination.

Arthur Noyer's family explains that they have a very different view of the case and are still certain that there was premeditation.

For Cécile Noyer, Arthur's mother, "with this turnaround, they' re rolling out the red carpet for Nordahl Lelandais".

The Noyer family is still astonished by this decision since it was the public prosecutor's office and its former prosecutor, Thierry Dran, who had initially opened the investigation for assassination.

Arthur Noyer's parents finally speak of a feeling of injustice since they have no legal recourse to appeal against this decision.

"We hope that this eagerness on the part of the prosecutor's office to change the characterisation is not linked to a question of legal timing," they said.

Cécile and Didier Noyer spoke this Thursday morning in Bourges, after the request of the prosecutor of Chambéry to judge the alleged killer of their son for murder and not assassination. They said they felt devastation, anger and then incomprehension. They announce that they want to propose a bill to give more prominence to the victims in the judicial proceedings.

"We went from devastation to anger, then to incomprehension. We do not understand the decision of the prosecutor of Chambéry." Cécile and Didier Noyer, the parents of Arthur, murdered in 2017 in Savoy, held a press conference this Thursday morning in the garden of Prés-Fichaux, in Bourges, in reaction to the demands of the prosecutor of the Republic of Chambery, Pierre-Yves Michau, who asks for the referral of Nordahl Lelandais to a criminal court for murder and no longer for assassination.

The first, voluntary homicide without premeditation, is punishable by a maximum of 30 years' imprisonment; the second, voluntary homicide with premeditation, by life imprisonment.

"He could be out in 20 years", Cécile Noyer said, not wishing to rely on the Maëlys case in the hope for a life sentence for Nordahl Lelandais, who is indicted in both cases, and presumed innocent.

A sentence in the prosecutor's indictment caused great pain to the Noyer parents, who live in Bourges. We were able to consult it:
"The evidence in the file do not make it possible to establish premeditation with certainty, the lies of the accused being insufficient to characterize this evidence."

"The lies of the alleged culprit mean that the assassination is not recognized," Cécile Noyer said. "We're rolling out the red carpet for him! It's up to us to fight and prove that it was an assassination. I've read the file, I believe there are facts showing premeditation."

Didier Noyer, who does not wish to go into too much detail, mentions videos from the Chambéry CCTV cameras where "we see a predator hunting a victim. A social predator hunting his prey. His fixation unfortunately fell upon Arthur. He needed to satisfy his instincts. In my opinion, this means premeditation."


Contacted after the press conference of the Noyer parents, Pierre-Yves Michau, prosecutor of Chambéry, confirms that Nordahl Lelandais "was driving around looking for someone, but that does not mean that he was looking for someone with the aim to assassinate him, that it was planned from the start. The position of the public prosecutor's office is to consider that the plan went wrong. The prosecution considered that it did not have all the evidence to argue that all was planned from the outset."

Concerning the "lies" of Nordahl Lelandais, Pierre-Yves Michau indicates that "it is not because Lelandais lied about a lot of things that we can accuse him of everything. It is true that Lelandais is lying, that he has given successive versions of which the falsity has been demonstrated. But we cannot deduce with certainty that he had premeditated his action. I understand that the civil parties misunderstood the meaning of this sentence in the indictment and I understand their immense suffering. But we are not giving Lelandais a gift. Our job is to prosecute criminals, but we rely with reason on the evidence."

Accompanied by their lawyer Bernard Boulloud, Cécile and Didier Noyer took advantage of this press conference to present a bill to Ludwig Speter-Lejeune, parliamentary attaché of Loïc Kervran, the LREM deputy from the third constituency of Cher, a bill that aims to give more weight to victims in criminal proceedings.

In particular to allow them to appeal the terms of an indictment order before an assize court. The Noyer couple know that this will not change anything in their case, but hope that it will help other families. In the meantime, they say they "trust" the investigating judge in the Arthur Noyer case not to follow the prosecutor's demands and send Nordahl Lelandais back to the assize court for assassination.

When questioned, Didier and Ludwig Speter-Lejeune assure that their joint presence on the list of the outgoing MR mayor of Bourges, Pascal Blanc, during the municipal elections in March is not linked to the choice of Loïc Kervran. The Noyer couple indicate that they have established links with MP Kervran, who expressed his support for them since the disappearance of their son Arthur and then at the important moments of this affair, that has now become judicial.

For the first time, relatives of Nordahl Lelandais testify their own child is also a victim of the ex-military.

"It's a blow with a sledgehammer, I feel betrayed." These words are spoken by a relative of a Nordahl Lelandais. For a long time, he believed in his cousin's innocence. Until overwhelming evidence was gathered and until the ex-military confessed to the facts.

During the night of 26th to 27th August 2017, little Maëlys mysteriously disappeared from a wedding in the town of Pont-de-Beauvoisin in Isère. It was only a few months later that Nordahl Lelandais confessed to having killed the girl. According to him, the act was involuntary. He would have suddenly slapped the child and the blow would have been fatal.

Among those who defended him for a long time were his cousins. In an interview with our colleagues from France 2, they testify. Filled with guilt, they say they saw nothing. "I feel so betrayed, so bad. There's this shame that I have been able to defend him," one of them explains. When the case broke, his relatives were convinced that Nordahl was in fact a victim.

"For us, it wasn't possible. It had to be a mistake. He was the scapegoat. We needed to imagine that," they explain.

Yet a few days before Maëlys' murder, Nordahl Lelandais was sexually abusing their young daughter. It was the police officers who, by examining the ex-dog handler's phones and computers, discovered the crime. "We did not want to see the video, but we saw photos on which we identified our daughter. She was four years old at the time," the couple confided to the microphone of France 2.

Nordahl Lelandais, aged 36, is being indicted for the murder of little Maëlys (end of August 2017 in Isère) and the sexual assaults committed on two young cousins a few weeks earlier, aged four and six at the time of the events.

The relatives of the former soldier have decided to testify in order to support the parents of the little Maëlys.

In a few months, Nordahl Lelandais will be brought to trial before the assize court for the case of Maëlys, a 9-year-old girl who disappeared during the night of 26-27 August 2017, during a wedding party in Pont-de-Beauvoisin (Isère). He is also suspected of the murder of Corporal Arthur Noyer, who was reported missing on 12 April 2017. There have been numerous disappearances in the region and families are brought together in an association headed by two commissioners. What if Nordahl Lelandais is the new French serial killer?

All the "cold cases" have popped up in the search for connections: "The link between all this is already proximity," according to Philippe Folletet, vice-president of the association Assistance and Search for Missing Persons (ARDP), for the magazine "13h15 le dimanche" (replay)." He points to a large number of points marked on a large map, citing the names of people who may have had a direct or indirect link with Nordahl Lelandais: "This is quite a wealth of elements."

"We have 21 cases of disappearances in the time space from 2002 to 2017 that can be analysed in more detail, according to certain timetables," says Bernard Valézy, president of the ARPD. "Leads that could also point to a different person. From the outset, we have always said that we should not focus solely on Lelandais' involvement and that there could also be other people of the same type operating in that region."

Under pressure, the gendarmerie decided to create the first national investigation cell to carry out cross-checks, the Ariane cell: 900 files came out of the closets, 450 were examined, about 40 were passed on to investigators and judges. "What the gendarmerie was interested in was making sure we didn't miss anything," explains General Jean-Philippe Lecouffe, deputy director of the judicial police at the national gendarmerie. "From Nordahl Lelandais or someone else... We asked ourselves: isn't there a link that can be made between the different cases?"

Nordahl Lelandais, alleged murderer of Maëlys and Corporal Arthur Noyer, could be indicted for a fifth time coming Thursday, February 27.

According to information from the Dauphiné Libéré, the thirty-something man from Domessin was extracted Wednesday 26 February at the request of the investigating judge of Charleville-Mézières, in charge of the investigation for sexual assault on a 15 year old minor of which a cousin of Nordahl Lelandais would have been a victim.

According to the testimony of this teenager, aged 14 at the time, the events took place on the day of her father's funeral in March 2017. On that day, after the ceremony, when the girl had stepped outside to smoke a cigarette, her cousin, Nordahl Lelandais, approached her, forcing himself upon her. The girl would have immediately pushed him away. Frustrated, Nordahl Lelandais would then have threatened her with death if she revealed the facts. It wasn't until the summer of 2018 that the teenager finally confided in her mother, when she learned that two very young cousins had been sexually assaulted by Nordahl Lelandais, shortly before Maëlys' abduction and murder.

Believing the evidence to be sufficiently conclusive, the investigating magistrate of Charleville-Mézières therefore ordered the extraction of Nordahl Lelandais in order to have him presented this Thursday. A presentation that required an extraction as early as Wednesday, in order to travel the 600 kilometres to reach the Ardennes from Saint-Quentin-Fallavier. On the other end of the journey, a cell is waiting for Nordahl Lelandais on Wednesday evening in a secret location. According to information from the Dauphiné Libéré, the thirty-something from Domessin left the Saint-Quentin-Fallavier prison under a very strong escort, a convoy made up of several prison vehicles.

Nordahl Lelandais mis en examen pour agression sexuelle sur une petite cousine

Yet another indictment for Nordahl Lelandais. Already suspected of the murder of little Maëlys in 2017, of that of Corporal Arthur Noyer (in April of the same year in Savoie) and accused of sexual assault on two young cousins (aged four and six years at the time of the events) just before the death of Maëlys de Araujo, the former dog handler is once again facing justice.

Nordahl Lelandais, 37 years old, was taken from his cell in Saint-Quentin-Fallavier (Isère) on Wednesday morning and is once again charged with the sexual assault of another young cousin, who was 14 years old at the time, in 2017. It was an investigating judge in Charleville-Mézières who served him this indictment, after he spent the night from Wednesday to Thursday in an undisclosed location.

"This is the logical next step," Caroline Rémond, the teenager's lawyer, told Le Parisien. "This new indictment will make it possible to make the connection with the Maëlys file but also with those of the other cousins who were attacked," the lawyer continues. She also represents two other young cousins of Lelandais.

At the beginning of February, the gendarmes of the Reims search section had questioned Lelandais in police custody as part of a judicial investigation opened after the 14-year-old cousin's complaint accusing Lelandais of sexual assault. The facts denounced by the teenager date back to March 2017, i.e. one month before the assassination of Corporal Arthur Noyer (in April 2017 in Savoie).

In a video broadcast in the summer of 2019 by BFMTV - in which she appears in the shadows without being recognised, her voice having been altered - she tells of having been touched by her "big cousin" on the day of her father's funeral. The accused allegedly then threatened to kill her if she said anything. Two years later, the girl filed a complaint after confiding in her mother.

"In essence, this indictment adds a little more colour to the true portrait of Nordahl Lelandais," according to Caroline Rémond. "It also gives another idea of what he was like in 2017." For the investigators, this first attack against his cousin would be the starting point of several months of horror in the journey of Lelandais.

Me Caroline Rémond also reminds us that the teenager "is the only person of age who can testify about what Nordahl Lelandais was like" during the period leading up to the night of August 27, 2017, when Maëlys was murdered.

Out of 900 cases studied, some 40 unsolved homicides and disappearances have come to the attention of investigators because they may be linked, in some way, to Nordahl Lelandais. These are the results of the Ariane cell, set up to retrace the path of the presumed killer of little Maëlys.

The Ariane cell is made up of "7 permanent gendarmes who are from the criminal intelligence service in Pontoise, and has the support of all the investigative sections involved in the files in question," according to General Jean-Philippe Lecouffe, deputy director of the gendarmerie's judicial police, a guest of RTL. It was created in January 2018 following the two cases involving Nordahl Lelandais (the murder of Maëlys and the disappearance of Arthur Noyer).

"Many of the victims' families wanted to know if their cases had anything to do with this criminal," the general said. That's why they "reviewed all the cases in a quarter of the French departments over a period of about 20 years". These are unsolved homicides, worrying disappearances and cases of unidentified corpses.

To go through these cases with a fine-tooth comb, the unit "decided to rate them according to 4 main criteria: a criterion of time, place, type of victim and sensitivity - media or due to the investigator's eyes", explains Jean-Philippe Lecouffe. Out of the 40 cases retained, the gendarmes are thus trying "to find answers for the families of victims," without necessarily aiming to pinpoint Nordhal Lelandais.

The Ariane cell does not do the investigations. "Once we selected these cases, we went back to the investigators and magistrates who were in charge of them," the general said. "They are the ones who decide when to inform the families," he says. "Investigators will re-explore these files, see if there are things that have been forgotten and see if things can still be done or not."

This cell could work for another "3, 4 or 5 years". At the moment, it is still open.

I was surprised to hear in the interview that the Ariane cell does NOT focus exclusively on Nordahl Lelandais. It was created AFTER the murders of Maëlys and Arthur Noyer, but apparently, tracing Nordahl Lelandais' whereabouts during the recent years is only part of its tasks.

Did I miss something in translating earlier reports about the Ariane cell? They most definitely excluded Nordahl Lelandais in the disappearance of Lucas Tronche, and others.

Upon the whole, I'd say this broader task is good news for families of the missing.
