The investigation into the disappearance of nine year old Maëlys on Sunday 27 August from a wedding party, must shed light on a number of obscure or contradictory points in the suspect's successive statements, who was indicted on 3 September for "kidnapping, sequestration or arbitrary detention of a minor."
"According to his lawyer Bernard Méraud, the man was present at the wedding party in Pont-de-Beauvoisin (Isère), where he admits to having "supplied some drugs to some of his friends during the evening," according to the lawyer to "Libération".
Here are the points that need to be sorted out:
Who's the other kid that would have gotten in the car?
Confronted with the discovery of the girl's DNA on the dashboard of her car, the suspect, a 34-year-old man who was imprisoned and indicted on Sunday after being held in police custody on Thursday, admitted that Maëlys did come into his car, an Audi A3 - after first saying she hadn't been in it.
He says she went in with a little boy on the evening of the wedding, Saturday, August 26, to find out if the dogs of the man - a former military dog handler - were there, while he smoked a cigarette in the parking lot of the party hall. The three would then have returned to the hall. The gendarmes are looking for this little boy, unknown at the moment.
Why was the vehicle cleaned?
The cleaning of the car on Sunday afternoon, August 27, by its owner, initially considered suspicious by the investigators, was due, according to him, to the fact that he was to sell it within a week. "The buyer has been identified and confirmed that this sale was going to take place," his lawyer told the "Le Parisien". The daily notes that "the gendarmes recovered from a bag that was used to clean the car, objects that arecurrently being analyzed."
Where are the wine stained shorts?
Living with his parents in the hamlet of Domessin, eight minutes by car from the party hall, the suspect said he went back there during the evening to "change his shorts stained with wine". These were so dirty that "he made the choice in the very moment to throw ithem into the garbage," his lawyer said to "Libération".
The thirty-year-old then returned to the party hall. The gendarmes are looking for the garment, which remains untraceable.
Where do scratches come from?
The gendarmes noticed when they first arrested him that the suspect had scratches on his arm and knee. The man explained that these had happened to him while he was gardening in raspberry bushes. The disadvantage,"Le Parisien points out," is that the mother of the thirty-year-old said during questioning that her son is not a gardener..."
What happened with the phones?
This is one of the points that quickly caught the attention of the gendarmes: the suspect's mobile phone was stopped at the approximate time of Maëlys' disappearance. "This phone is defective, according to my client, and has already had problems before when it went out," says Me Méraud.
"However, the suspect had concealed the existence of a second telephone, found in his home", notes Le Parisien. According to the man, this second telephone was "being terminated".
