There were 2 arrests? Both the 17 and 14 yr olds? Would 14 yr old be in juvenile?

It worried me that mom stated she looked over photos at the police station and identified one of the suspects. THEN the police told her they already had him in custody. wth?

She had already given them a description---then the cops went to the local schools and asked who was absent that morning. From there they probably went out to find the absentees.

From looking at the FB, it seems likely that if the cops stopped by that kids home they would find something illegal, like drugs, so they could bring him in for a chat.

At that time he was put in a picture line up and mom picked him out. JMO

Yes, as I understand what the chief said in the presser. The 17 year old is considered and adult but the other a minor.

I believe the 14yo would 100%. The mother thought he was much younger.
I believe he was a small guy.
At 17 you go to the BIG house.
He is probably isolated from other prisoners.
NOT even hardened killers like a punk that kills a baby.

pick on someone your own size... sorta

Killing the baby in front of the mom won't cushion him any.

Someone also mentioned this above. I considered one of Demarquise's FB friends "ZF" could be the younger accomplice, but ZF commented on an image earlier today to the effect of "leave his cousin alone" so if there were actually 2 arrested it seems he would not be one of them.

Sheesh or you could be right, just checked the articles and they are pre 2005.

Regardless the kid is an idiot and will likely plea.

BTW the Supreme Court made a bad decision.

I believe the confusion about this comes in when juvenile defendants are tried as adults.

While a juvenile can be tried as an adult and convicted, they can not be sentenced to death if they are 17 or younger when they commit the crime.

In 2005 the Supreme Court ruled it violated the 8th amendment which prohibits cruel and unusual punishment.

I don't think De'Marquis was enrolled in school. He had recently moved to Brunswick from Atlanta. His sister said he walked to her house frequently in the morning and they went out to breakfast together. (It sounds like she took him out to Denny's or somewhere. Going out to a restaurant for breakfast frequently isn't something most kids in school do, IMO. This takes a lot of time. It's also unpredictable for how much time is required. )

where's the nod in agreement smiley? [ETA he was who I was thinking about as well] although he does seem to look up to his cousin. :( ]

What the mrs said.

I am not sure they would have pictures of every black kid that missed school that day. Probably only the ones who had a history of trouble etc. jmo

I used to work in the office of a middle school. We would occasionally get visits from the cops about who was absent during certain outside incidents. [ never murder thank goodness.]

But there were sometimes local home burglaries that were usually traced back to kids. And sometimes they would steal from the local stores while being truant.

The cops would come and look at the list of absentees, then look at last years yearbook and or our official student packets, which include the pictures of each student.

I doubt, in this case, that they went to every single home of all absentees that day---but they did have the full list. And I bet that the administration could have easily pointed them in the right direction. If these kids were capable of shooting a baby in the face, they were already well known by the office staff, imo. JMO

When we were having that rash of local burglaries the cops were able to narrow down the absentees to about 40 students. There was a general description of two brown haired light skinned males, one tall and lean and one much smaller. We knew pretty much which kids to narrow it down to and gave them the top 10 to interview. We were right. LOL It was a set of cousins who had been on suspension at the time for fighting and stealing.

Atlanta is about 5 hours from Brunswick.

Brunswick is south of Savannah...

eta: in GA kids can "drop out" of school at 16... legally

But they probably got a lead on the 14 yr old that way, and figured it out from there. JMO

Okay, so to clarify... we cannot post any facebook pages?

I thought we could post the named suspect, but saw that a post with the link to his facebook was deleted
in the last hour, a couple pages back (page 16 or 17 I believe) when I went back to find it.

So is his off limits even though he has been named?

<deleted> nevermind. I guess I'm tired, I didn't realize the name wasn't right.

Thank you, mrsu, for this very informative article!

Elkins aligns himself with the Bloods gang. The use of 5's instead of the letter S was obviously deliberate- "Writing the number 5 very large and/or BOLD, this shows respect for the gang." Also, he shows hand signals and wears red in most of his pics- more Bloods affiliation.

Or.....

remember today the mom said that a she knew a neighbor had witnessed it. But LE refuted and said that only mom saw what happened. Could it be that there was, in fact, a neighbor witness - and could it be that this 17 yr old was already known as a gang banger so LE would everything they could to protect the neighbor witness - BUT that neighbor witness ID'd him - either from previous mugshot or even in a line-up?

I do believe they have the right kids. I said this morning, after I first saw mom interviewed that I didn't see any deception in her and I didn't - still don't. She is a poor broken woman but she was telling the truth. Such a sad story.

And I still bet the 14 yr old has rolled over on the shooter. 14 is young - those big bad LE cops can sweat it out of a 14 yr old - especially one that just had the "chit" scared outta him and saw what he did. Horrible. They both should fry - IMHO

The bottom article is the most bizarre thing I've ever read. None of this makes sense to me. None. Including the statements made within the article itself. Why wouldn't the dad stay with the mother for a few hours? He scoops up toys and hits the road? Why does she only have one friend visiting? Coffee and a fruit basket? Where's the neighborhood?? Why would you elaborate you spent all your money on the baby when explaining why you didnt have money for the robbers? Many other oddities.. I'm just saying I have more questions than answers at this point and I am hoping there is a lot more to this story.

The link is still here.

I know it is.
However, there was a link put up in the last few hours that was deleted and it was a link to HIS facebook.
So I thought perhaps they had changed the decision to allow it and were going back to delete them all.

The rules are different on every case and I want to make sure we know what they are on this case.
The post wasn't offensive or attacking the victim, so I didn't see why it'd be deleted otherwise, since it was his facebook.
