Found Deceased GA - LaTania 'Janell' Carwell, 16, Augusta, 17 April 2017 *mom & stepdad arrested*

Sheriff Roundtree said it began as an investigation to locate an alive Ms. Carwell, they are now in recovery mode for her remains. It is considered a homicide.

No physical evidence of crime at the State Road home. They will revisit and re-assess evidence of that home.

Investigation shifted based on interviews conducted by ?.

They don't know if there are other people involved, they believe they have the two primary individuals in custody. This is clearly a homicide investigation.

It's so sad that Janell KNEW something was going to happen, based on her actions in her classroom and comments to her friends. I can't even imagine what she was subject to in her home. I know we can't sleuth her sister, but I wonder if the sister has helped the investigation and if that sister is in a safe place and getting some counseling.

I am now considering a possible pregnancy by the stepfather .... It sounds as though there was something going on for a while, and those in the know -TT and LT- were trying to figure out what to do. I wish LaTania would have been able to talk to one of her teachers or a school staff, but who knows what she might have been threatened with (abusers often do everything they can to keep everything behind the door in order to protect themselves).

This beautiful young woman had so much potential and to offer to the world, only to be destroyed by those who should have been protecting her. I am thoroughly and completely disgusted.

The aunt who has taken the sister in has sent messages to the Facebook group I'm in, the sister is safe & getting help (though I don't know if that includes counseling specifically). The child arrived in their home with literally the clothes on her back. I know the community is helping with clothes & gift cards to get her a bed and toiletries and stuff. There is a local minister who (at the prayer vigil on Friday) mentioned a fundraising page that will be started. I don't have further info on that.

I too think its possible she was being sexually abused by step daddy and became pregnant. how disgusting of a can her mom be that she would hide that "for her man" ..... on her 16th b day no less heartbreaking, poor Janell

I was really hoping this wouldn't be the outcome. She appeared to be a really good girl with a lot to offer the world. These sorts of situations are really hard for me to wrap my mind around. There isn't anyone or anything that could make me hide my child being hurt or partake in hurting them. A mother is suppose to be that safe place for her children. My heart is so heavy hearing this news.

LaTania seen at church hours before disappearance, search for body ongoing

Investigators interviewed a person connected with this case on Friday and that is why it was upgraded to a homicide. As they look for the body of LaTania we continued to narrow down who saw the teen last and we confirmed she was in church Easter morning, hours before she was reported missing.

More than 50 searchers from various Richmond County agencies began the search for LaTania Janell Carwell’s body on Wednesday.



At a news conference Monday, Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree said that the office’s main priority is to start searches solely in the Augusta area and, if need be, expand to other areas. Roundtree said his office considered the case of the missing 16-year-old to be a homicide.
“We had a search team in the metro Atlanta area come out this weekend and conducted multiple searches in the area and we will go out again this week conducting additional searches based on forensic evidence that we gathered but we have not yet located the particular area which we feel the remains are,” he said.

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - UPDATE: The search for Latania has been suspended at the Tate Rd. site. Officials are calling this 'Phase 1' of search efforts. This included searching yards, wood lines, shed, and inoperable vehicles. Searchers also went door to door in hopes of leads from residents. Authorities say that they are looking clothing, remains, recently disturbed soil, unmarked or shallow grave sites or any other place Latania could be. Officials tell FOX 54 that some clothing was found however they can not confirm if it is related, but that potential evidence has been sent to a forensics lab. There are more than 50 searchers involved from several agencies.

Operations have moved to a second location which will be 'Phase 2' at a location that will not be disclosed to the public at this time. Those efforts will begin at 1 p.m.
