I can't remember exactly what was said in the hearing. I know SM gave permission the first time. Didn't Buford ask something about a special warrant was needed for dogs? Dang, I may have to listen to that hearing again.

I'm going to listen to the whole thing again pretty soon. There were several parts I didn't hear clearly the first time around. I'll keep an ear out for that part, too, as I don't remember.

Yes, he did. But which HRD dog? I think I counted four on her site with HRD training. Cody is the only one trained exclusively in HRD, but Cinco's credentials are mighty impressive.

I know there are video clips/photos posted on macon.com or perhaps other news sites that give glimpses of the dogs at some of the searches, but not sure which all ones. Maybe we can find some from the first search...? And see if we can ID the dogs.

Agreed -- all the dogs are pretty impressive!

Bessie are there pics of the dog on the searchers website?

Is the dog in the Macon photo Cody?

Good job team, that's Cody, I think! Nice sleuthing peeps.

She specializes in cadaver / human remains detection work, and is a great example of a service dog that gives her all in everything.

To me, that sure looks like Cody.

first dog on this page: http://www.k9sars.org/MoreDogs.html

(whoops, I see two of us were posting tentative confirmation at the same time!)

(Web site says Cody is currently working in Texas but it could be out of date, or Cody could not have gone to Texas until very recently.)

Oh yay!!! For Cody!!! :cheer:

Oh how I do hope it was Cody that did the first search because she is the one that is specifically trained in HRD/cadaver searches!! That IMO from what I've gleaned from Oriah would be the best case scenario with her searching since she is the only one trained just in the HRD!!

ETA: and wanted to add my cheers for my fellow sleuths, too!! You guys are some "Smooth" sleuthers!! Y'all make me proud to hang with you guys!! Go sleuthers!!:cheer:

From link upthread, here is some specific info regarding scent particles.

How do SAR Dogs work? All humans, alive or dead, constantly emit microscopic particles bearing human scent. Millions of these are airborne and are carried by the wind for considerable distances. Many air scenting dogs are also cross trained in body recovery........ Human Remains Detection Dogs are trained to detect and find the odor of human remains.... Air scent dogs range well away from their handlers and can cover huge areas in a much shorter time span than a typical man tracking search party. Using air scenting dogs has a much higher probability of detection rate than using a regular search party. The dog is not restricted to the missing person's track and can search long after the track is obliterated. Many air scenting search dogs are also trained in body recovery, and trailing/scent discrimination.

HUMAN REMAINS (CADAVER) DETECTION DOGS
are trained to detect and find the scent of human remains. Cadaver dogs are trained to find decomposing, skeletal, submerged, buried and/or scattered human remains in varied locations such as water, collapsed structures and wilderness areas. They are used for forensic detection such as finding trace evidence of blood, bone fragments, charred tissue and teeth in homicide situations.

arrow3.gif
TRAILING/TRACKING SEARCH DOGS
are mostly scent specific, meaning they are looking for a specific person's scent trail. They will follow one person's trail and totally ignore other individual's trail having been at the site before. The dog is presented with an article of clothing or anything the missing person had touched. The dog then will try to find the one scent in the area and follow it. The trails can be up to several days old and on varied surfaces such as dirt or on streets.

I love that little cheer smiley :loser:

I'm so tired tonight, I'm having trouble remembering why all the debate over the dogs even started, lol.

I just ran across this article that has some more details about the email. Wasn't sure if it has been posted.

She told Vandiver how much she had enjoyed Mercer and how wonderful Macon had been. Just in passing, without specifics, she told him that she thought someone had tried to break into her apartment recently. "Hoodlums," she surmised.
She told him she was happy. She told him how excited she was about the future, wherever it might take her.
And she was never heard from again.

I am past exhausted, but will try to look this over tomorrow. Looks like Oriah has been feverishly answering everything!

Yes, we have had that before -- the most I have ever seen on the email.

That's the same article that says the Zaxby's wrappers, etc., were found in her car -- rather than in her apartment, as we had always heard up until the time of that article.

Backwoods,
When you watch the hearing again. Watch Patterson when he is being questioned about the chloroform. I think you mentioned before you thought he was looking at Winters. During the chloroform segment he's cutting his eyes that way constantly.

Don't think it was me that mentioned that, but I will check it out when I re-watch.

I know this is not what is being discussed currently but I was thinking about this today as my mind was wandering at work...

So, it was stated the kid from Dublin who lived in the apartment under LG had moved out but had left a few things. Back then I assumed that for McD to have used it, he would have been certain that the guy had gone back home for awhile or was going on a trip so that it would be completely safe to use. But, as things have been clarified, that guy was just living across town with his girlfriend. That's pretty ballsy for McD to have used the apartment if he knew that the guy was still in town and could pop in whenever. So, maybe he had not really moved out much stuff at all...but he just bunked with his girlfriend most of the time and it had been awhile since he'd gone back over. I know lots of people who really don't live where they pay rent, just stay with their significant others.

But, what I'm getting at is that was pretty brazen for that residence to be used if the occupant was just "across town." Do you guys think McD would have known for sure or did he just take a chance and get lucky?

I agree - that's a huge risk to take not knowing 100% that he wouldn't drop in (of course, if it in fact turns out to be true that he was using that apt. for the crime).

Maybe he was that (falsely) confident that he would get away with it. We've read articles, most recently from TM, that McD thought alot of himself and his intelligence. Maybe he thought he was above getting caught?

All I've got to say is, it's very lucky for neighbor that he didn't come home. He would've probably been another victim if he had.

I got the impression that most of his things had already been moved
and he probably only had a few boxes and misc items to pick up.
I say this because BB stated he'd asked her to stay there with him
while he collected the remainder of his things.
I doubt BB would have hung around if he had more than would fit in his car or had any cleaning left to do, etc.
They probably weren't there more than 30 minutes - just my guess :)

You make a good point though. The risk certainly would have been higher
with him being in town instead of in Dublin. But, SM may have known he only
had his final checkout with BB left and those few things to pick up.
And if he knew (or it was obvious) he'd already cleaned up, then the risk
of him stopping by, or using the fridge for any reason, would have been fairly low.
