I realize this has nothing to do with what's being discussed, but I've been pondering the lack of known social networking sites for SM. I was just thinking that sometimes people who are avid gamers will have their social networking site under an avatar's name. I know a number who do.

Unfortunately I don't know anything about which game(s) were played or avatar names in this case, but maybe someone else does.
How about Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty? Just a wild guess because gaming is so not my bailiwick.

Gaming is not my forte either, but I don't think this is the one because it was produced in 2001 and it's a single player game. Most people don't play Playstation 2 games anymore. If I had to guess, it would be something like Halo, Call of Duty or Medal of Honor (all online, multi-player shooters). Especially if he was cussing up a storm in the apartment. I have heard some ppl doing the same when my husband plays these (you can talk to other players).

What's the Walmart scuttlebut?

I don't know...I just know Walmart was mentioned early on and I was hoping we would be seeing a video as so often happens in these cases, of someone buying something unusual...I will try to search the forum and see if I can find why it was mentioned.

Hopefully, someone with apartment complex management experience will answer this question. Can apartment complex master keys be copied? The place where I work has keys which cannot be copied on a regular key making machine. Something about an extra protrusion on the key allows it to be uncopyable. To replace a lost key, you have to either buy a device to make the key from the lock company (heard it costs dearly) or order and buy another key from the lock company. If the master key that was found in SM's apartment is of the type that cannot be copied, I would think this means the owners have an unaccounted for master key.
That's consistent with my experience over the years. Something new I learned from reading the warrant is that he not only had a master key to all of the apartments, but also a key to LG's apartment. Now, did he have it prior to the crime? Or did he take it from her key ring after the crime? I'm thinking about the missing persons report that stated her keys were on the sofa. Did anyone check to see which keys? And if he had a master key, why did he need her key?

So many questions.

Ah! That makes sense. Thank you.

What's the Walmart scuttlebut?

From a post on another thread:

did it say somewhere when he put it in the garbage or that he held on to her body? i must have missed it if it did.
and i want to see the walmart video too!
some questions i have are;
i wonder if he held lauren alive for sometime?
did he write the email about the macon hoodlums?
what day was her torso put in the trash bin?
how long had it been out there?
why did he talk to the media? (in one report i read it says that was when the police first became suspicious of him)
and what did he do with the rest of her?
and my biggest question is why he did it?

i doubt they will ever get a confession or answers with him being a law student. he probably knows to keep his mouth shut, just like he has all along.

I found this post....

Their probe also includes the discovery of purchases McDaniel made at a Wal-Mart store, but police will not say whether they think those purchases have any bearing on the Giddings investigation.

Maybe a "trophy"? Also possible I think -- although I know that it is hard to go here, after all that has been done and said -- that at some time in the past, Lauren might have given him one, as neighbors often do. You know, maybe she was going out of town for the day somewhere she couldn't take Butterbean, her dog, and asked him to look in on the dog, or feed it or something.

Do you know if any of the news reported what the group of friends who entered Lauren's apartment to look for her did with the extra key she kept outside when they left? I don't remember reading this info. In order to get our key at work, we had to sign that we received it. The paper has a number on it that is the same as the number on one side of my key. I am assuming this would be the number used to order another key from the lock company. If SM did infact plan this murder, he could have gotten the master key number or Lauren's key number and ordered one from the company.

McDaniel talked about getting away with murder, says Giddings slaying warrant
Scratches on McDaniel's torso when arrested, sources say
By AMY LEIGH WOMACK and JOE KOVAC JR. - Telegraph staff

A dismemberment slaying that has generated near-unprecedented publicity in Middle Georgia continued to fascinate Thursday with the revelation, among others, that the accused killer is said to have once claimed he knew how to get away with murder.

The arrest warrant charging 25-year-old Stephen Mark McDaniel with murder includes details not previously divulged in the more than monthlong investigation, including word that at some point in the past McDaniel allegedly said “he could commit murder.”

When Macon police crime scene specialists and workers from the city’s Public Works Department removed the bathtub from Lauren Giddings’ former apartment at Barristers Hall on Georgia Avenue on Thursday afternoon, one side of the tub was taped and covered.

The warrant says he mentioned “details of methods to avoid detection” that are, the warrant states, “similar to the facts and circumstances surrounding the killing of Lauren Giddings.”

The Telegraph seems to be patting itself on the back a few times in that most recent article, IMO. That's ok though -- guess they've done a pretty good job.

Doesn't name a source for the scratches info, but must feel pretty confident about it. I know the "rumor" version has been floating around a while.

Trophy...maybe. More likely, he had it previously. It's not far-fetched to think she might've given him a spare key at one time. It's been my belief from the very beginning that she saw him as harmless and trustworthy. A neighbor she'd turn to for help. And if she was trusting enough to leave one outside and tell a friend(s) where it was, then why not leave one with the nice little guy next door. Poor girl. :(

I don't recall reading anything about the whereabouts of the key that was hidden under the planter after she was determined to be missing. Good point about McD ordering a key if he plotted the murder in advance. But still, why not just use the master key? I think it makes more sense that she gave him one as a back up in the past.

The Telegraph has also learned that authorities found what resembled fingernail scratches on McDaniel, two sources familiar with the murder investigation say. Police found the marks on McDaniel’s torso when he was booked into the Bibb County jail on burglary charges.
Kudos to Oldercitizen for sharing that rumor earlier.
RUMOR--RUMOR(I think that is how it is done)

I think we will soon hear about some unexplainable scratches on SM side or torso, just my belief.

I wish some of the local media would jump on the "maintenance man" thing. I want to know whether someone somewhat answering the description even exists or if it is pure fiction.

They may be working on it, even as we post, I guess. I do see several things that could be problematical with it for a reporter. But I think SmoothOperator was right -- BB at the apartments would be a good place to start...

After the murder, he may have taken her keys and had a copy made.
There may be a surveillance video of this somewhere,
or someone may remember making it for him.

As for master key duplication, this will depend on the lock.
More than likely, he could have purchased/obtained a master blank for those locks.
I can think of several ways he could have gone about this,
but the best scenario I can come up with would be to simply
ask the MM to borrow the key real quick to go unlock your door.
Press it into some silly-putty to get the pattern. Return the key.
Then, just file the master blank yourself.

Wow. How did we get from "foot long scratches like on a cutting board" to:
Police declined to say why the cast-iron tub was taken out, but a source familiar with the investigation referred to the edge of the tub as a “butcher block” because, on close inspection, it appeared to have been marred with cut marks similar to those left by a saw

The Wal Mart issue came up several weeks back when it was reported that LE had gone thru MCDaniel's recent Wal Mart purchases from the store there in Macon.. No one, to my knowledge knows what those items were but wonder if they mave have been items such as tools to dismember and products used for the clean up were a few of the ideas we thought of..

Now in seeing the arrest warrant that there has been found a particular brand hacksaw with Lauren Giddings DNA on the blade and the packaging for that identical type saw was found in SM's apt.. Thus further fueling the "scuttle butt" of could it have been one of the Wal Mart purchases..

HTH! :)
