He knew he didn’t have the promotion several days before going missing, however the day he went missing he had a meeting with his supervisor telling him WHY he didn’t get the promotion. After that meeting he said he was ill. He hasn’t been seen after that.

Per the presser, there has been no activity on Tim's bank accounts. They are also checking to see if there's a mental health history.

No banking or credit card activity

This is so upsetting. I wish we knew what the supervisor told him. Tim is such a high achiever. I wonder if that conversation just devastated him and he broke down completely.

Per the presser, he told several coworkers he was upset that he didn't receive the promotion and that he had been expecting the promotion.

Per the presser, the CDC is being fully cooperative with the investigation. They are helping in every way they can.

It breaks my heart if he committed suicide based on not getting a promotion. I know many people who define themselves by their career status, and it's so sad, IMO. We're so much more than what we do to earn a paycheck, and so much more than how much we earn.

I just can't believe this bright, talented man would be so upset about not getting a promotion he would self harm. The problem with missing persons cases is there is so little information that we struggle to fill the vacuum with speculation.

Oh that does not sound good :(

(Thank you anonypotomous and liltexans for transcribing!)

He called in sick the 8th Thursday and the 9th Friday & went home the 12th sick early.
He also called his mom at 9:12am she was at the gym and missed his call. (NOT 5:12am)
However, his phone shows he made the call but her phone on a different carrier did not!
Hmm[emoji848]
All of his belongings are in his home.
They have not ruled out foul play, there is just nothing to indicate there is.

MOO

I completely agree. Even without a promotion, Tim had accomplished more than so many people, especially at his young age. And outside of his career, he's a human being with intrinsic value and worth. And his family obviously loves him.

Per the presser, he found out the previous Monday (2/5) that he didn't get the promotion. He went to work Tuesday and Wednesday (2/6 and 2/7) and called out sick Thursday and Friday (2/8 & 2/9). He went to work Monday and had a conversation with his supervisor about WHY he didn't get the promotion. Then said he was going home sick.

So, the topic of those conversations/texts/discussions he had with his family over the weekend that "didn't fit in with family culture and values" (or however the parents put it in their interviews) is super relevant, IMO.

Oh, I didn't realize he didn't get the promotion. I thought the early articles said he did. Must have been incorrect information reported. That really does put some context to his possibly seeming "angry".

Yes, it does explain his dad's comment about the anger. I wonder if he actually WAS sick on the days he called in ? If not, was he planning something during that time ? Not sure I completely believe the promotion issue being a cause of possible suicide. Tim has been involved in the Public Health field since he began college. He has sterling credentials. It would only be a matter of time before he rises up in the CDC. One thing I recall reading at the beginning : Tim's old supervisor had retired, and he had a new supervisor. Maybe a not so good fit for him ? But still, unless he has a history of emotional issues, I can't see this.

I'm hoping against the odds that Tim ran off in anger to take a much needed break somewhere far away.
Maybe he knew his family would come and take care of Bo.

In an earlier interview reported in the New York Times, his father said he had both personal and professional issues.

"Commander Cunningham had “a lot going on” personally and professionally, his father added, and his most recent conversation with his son had left him worried."

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/24/us/cdc-employee-missing.html?

I agree with the idea that the denial of the promotion -- and maybe some difference with the new supervisor (or with some change in the focus of his workplace) -- are probably the professional issues that disappointed him and that may have caused the anger mentioned in other sources (forgive me, can't find them now). I wonder whether Cunningham called in sick for two days the previous week because he was sick, or because he was disheartened. Of course, being really bummed out can also make you more vulnerable to actually getting sick.

At the same time, in the quote above, his father also mentioned that Cunningham had personal issues. So as others have speculated here, the personal issues could've contributed significantly to the situation. We haven't been told what the personal issues are and I certainly couldn't speculate about them here. Actually, based on the last couple of answers at the press conference, I'm not sure the police have been told everything about the personal issues either.

Not getting the promotion may have been the only thing he had ever failed at in his life.
How sad if this caused him to commit suicide. He must have done so much thinking in those days he didn’t go to work.
If only he knew how much he was loved and admired.
I’d love to have met him, there was something charismatic about him.
I don’t see anything sinister in comment to neighbour, except maybe a plea for help.

My apologies if this was said already. Could he have been struggling with a personal relationship too, maybe sharing alternative ideas of relationships.? Maybe, he was thinking about telling his family and then this promotion thing comes up. Not getting the promotion could be related to personal relationships at work, possible complaints, anything. A high achiever would take this to heart.

Also, I would like to say first this is no ill will towards his family. But was he intellectually different than they are? I am a doctor from a working class family. There are many times, that is not their fault, that I feel different or misunderstood. It can be lonely and very depressing. I hide it as he might too. This could have been enflamed by the lack of the promotion. I have been there.

My thinking is self-harm.

Sorry if this was already covered. Just catching up!

Maybe it was his dream job/position that was denied to him? Something he had worked towards for a long time?

Two years ago I was denied support for something that was my dream, something I really wanted to develop. I was devastated. Problems at home and health issues also emerged during that time. I was very depressed, sad, lonely and angry, and many times I just wanted to leave. I didn't because I also have dogs who would have not gotten the care they need. Nowadays I feel better but at that time I was at such a low point I could not see a way forward. I can imagine how Timothy must have felt when he was denied the promotion he had expected. When his boss told him the reason on the Monday he went missing, it must have been the last straw. He might have felt gutted and betrayed and saw no future that appealed to him.

I just hope he didn't harm himself but just took time for himself like I wanted to two years ago.
