Braunschweig (dpa) - In the rape trial against the suspect also in the Maddie case, a former fellow prisoner is to be heard as a witness by Christian B. The Criminal Chamber will probably comply with a corresponding request from the public prosecutor's office, announced the presiding judge in the Braunschweig Regional Court. The prosecutors had requested the interrogation of the man the day before because the defendant in prison is said to have talked to him about several rapes in Portugal.

According to the court's previous planning, the man could be heard by the criminal chamber at the end of September and thus become one of the last witnesses in the proceedings, which is in the home straight. The previously known program for the trial against the 47-year-old German is coming to an end, the taking of evidence could be closed in the coming weeks. With regard to the possible witness, the question of his credibility should be in the center. The probative value of narratives behind bars is also likely to be questioned above all by the defense.

The sex offender, who has been convicted several times, is accused of three rapes and two cases of sexual abuse of children, which he is said to have committed in Portugal between 2000 and 2017. However, the trial is rather attentive because the accused is also suspected of murder in the case of three-year-old Madeleine "Maddie" McCann, who disappeared from a Portuguese holiday resort in 2007. The Maddie case is not the subject of the current proceedings. The presumption of innocence applies.

As one of the final points for the proceedings, a psychiatric expert began his report on Friday. The witness first generally gave general terms such as pedophilia, sadism and masochism. He has not yet established any connection with the accused. He is currently still in prison for the rape of a 72-year-old US-American woman in Portugal in 2005. The prison sentence for this he had served in the spring of 2025.“

From that report it seems uncertain whether or not the witness will be allowed to testify

From this -
With regard to the possible witness, the question of his credibility should be in the center. The probative value of narratives behind bars is also likely to be questioned above all by the defense.
- it suggests that he will only be allowed to testify if the credibility of his testimony passes the smell test, the primary one being, when and to whom did he make his official statements regarding these alleged conversations.
