Absolutely surprised and pleased with the judgement.
My opinion only...
Carl's generation didn't have wealth, didn't have many choices, could not afford to choose any career they want. Carl's only opportunity to get ahead was to be an entrepreneur and work hard. Carl's love of his child, Wayne, was expressed with money. Money gave his child, Wayne, something Carl himself never had.
Wayne got a guaranteed path to a career, and he did not have to slave night and day. Wayne took advantage of the opportunity and become a pilot. Wayne lived a luxurious life, earned a good living. While he had the world by the tail, he still had his father Carl's example - he knew that his father worked for all he had, and a bit of that rubbed off on Wayne, so while he lived in luxury, he was still somewhat frugal.
Like his father Carl, Wayne also gave his son, Dellen, material comfort without requiring work in return. Dellen was not worried about finances, and did not learn that money comes from hard work and devotion. Rather, Dellen learned that money is an entitlement. Dellen never had a father figure that worked for his money, but rather a father figure who had whatever he wanted, by family fortune alone.
Dellen, by virtue of family money, was able to do whatever he wanted in life, without working for it. Education and career choice was secure, if he wanted it, but also, anything else he wanted. If he chose to not apply himself, and without education or a career, he could have a helicopter, boats, sea-doos, Baja race trucks, dating multiple women at the same time, on and on, he was spoiled rotten. So he chose to live which delighted them. Drugs, money, sex, power and control. Whatever he wanted, he got, or took.
People fawned over him, he could have parties, and be respected by everyone, by virtue of the family wealth and the toys. He could control others. What a rush this was, the ultimate puppet master, pull the strings and watch them dance. His assemblage of friends were all similiar, with money and drugs, he could control them, and they would allow him, never challenging him. He could cheat on his girlfriend, she would allow it, as he had money. He was addicted to the admiration and respect that this control seemed to bring.
Mother Madeleine - further encouraged Dellen. My little golden child. How precious you are. Despite Dellen's loser existence, his mother continued to hold him in a position of esteem. After all, since Wayne and her split, Dellen was essentially the only true family she had. So she doted on Dellen.
At some point, it seems that Wayne realized his son was wasting his life away. The entitlement and arrogance was not what Wayne wanted in his son, but rather, Wayne desired the family legacy passed to Dellen, as MillardAir was passed to him.
And so, Wayne ressurected MillardAir as an MRO, and he tried hard to bring this new business venture to fruition. This was essentially Wayne's way of teaching his son how to earn his money, and in so doing, pass the family business to Dellen. However, Wayne's poor choices earlier in life, and Madeleine's continued doting, both assisted in the molding of a Dellen who was entitled, arrogant, and narcissistic. So, try as Wayne might, the MRO venture was essentially doomed to fail once Dellen got control over it.
Dellen, viewed the MillardAir MRO with disdain. How dare Wayne leverage the money and have it tied up in a business. Dellen, with his entitlement, felt the money was to be his, and Dellen wanted to do whatever he wanted with it. Problem, the money belonged to Wayne, and the MRO in Waterloo simply was not Dellen's decision. Wayne was moving forward with his plan, and Dellen needed to fall into line.
Falling in line, and recognizing the authority Wayne held, was intolerable to Dellen. He does what he wants, when he wants, and the world owes him. He was, in his own mind, "Heaven Sent" and "Don't you dare forget" (OR ELSE)
At some point, Dellen decided to murder Laura Babcock. He wanted to impress CN, so he mapped it out, and then dulled all that he had as a conscience, and completed the dreadful deed of murdering Laura. Interesting, afterwards, he felt not guilt, but an adrenaline rush. This was the ultimate power trip, the power of life and death. Dellen felt God-like. What a trip.
Now, the biggest payback of all. He could take the business, the homes, and live a life of extreme luxury. All it would require, is offing his father, and everything would be his. What a perfect plan. And so, with no semblance of conscience remaining, he planned, then proceeded in his second murder, and boom, instant control of the family fortune. He could dismantle the MillardAir MRO, use the hangar as a chop shop, make lots of money, and kill as he pleased.
The lesson so far? He could kill with impunity, he could control everyone around him, and he could do whatever he wanted. Sights on other targets.
Like most drugs, the euphoria dulls with the conscience over time, and eventually, he wanted another hit of it. So, Tim Bosma became his third target, and like Laura's murder, another euphoric buzz. He felt incarnate. All the worldly posessions he wanted could be his, he could simply kill and take. Lesson learned, he can control and murder and gain both a high, and profit financially from it.
when the police were closing in on him, his arrogance and narcissism overcame his fear. Once incarcerated, he again proceeded to control and manipulate Noudga and his mother, into beating the charge by lying and witness tampering. The puppet master still felt the control buzz, even while awaiting trial for murder. After all, he had gotten away with it twice already, third time - walk in the park.
I am convinced, to this day, some things have not changed, and they never will.
(1) Dellen felt entitled to be free and wealthy, and get whatever he wants. And he still feels the same.
(2) Life in prison will consist of more attempts to control and manipulate others. If not fellow prisoners, then his mother and the guards.
(3) Dellen will never feel remorse for his crimes, he is Heaven Sent, his narcissism and psychopathy are incurable.
(4) Wayne and Dellen would have been so much better off, had Carl never seen wealth.
(5) Carl controlled the money, Wayne enjoyed the money, and money controlled Dellen.
What a sad ending. Many lives lost and shattered, including his own family.
