Horry County police chief gives update on probe into Heather Elvis disappearance

A task force of at least 15 local, state and federal investigators has been called into the search for Heather Elvis, who disappeared some time Dec. 18, according to Horry County police investigators.

Police have executed more than a dozen search warrants, administered polygraph examinations and fielded hundreds of tips from the public, investigators say.

Although police chief Saundra Rhodes said Thursday that the investigation remains "very active," she said police still lack any probable cause to make an arrest.

TONIGHT AT 6 - Exclusive new details in the Heather Elvis disappearance

WMBF News has exclusive new details into the case of missing 20-year old Heather Elvis. Heather disappeared on December 17, and her car was discovered at Peachtree landing in Socastee.

Heather's father, Terry Elvis, has been at the center of a massive search effort both on foot and on social media. However, those efforts have not always gotten the blessing of the Horry County Police detectives investigating the case.

Horry County police says harassment reports sidetrack from Heather Elvis search

As the search for missing person Heather Elvis nears the two-month mark, Horry County police chief Saundra Rhodes is asking the public for cooler heads to prevail.

Since Elvis, 20, disappeared from her Myrtle Beach area apartment in the early morning hours of Dec. 18, Rhodes said county police have fielded hundreds of tips, many of which have been helpful.

But police have also had to respond to a rash of harassment complaints that she says "sidetracks" investigators from the primary goal, which is finding Heather Elvis.

“That has been frustrating," Rhodes said of the harassment complaints. "It does not hinder our investigation, but it sidetracks it.”

Exclusive new details on Heather Elvis case come out

WMBF News is revealing new details about the search for missing 20-year old, Heather Elvis. As we discovered, the exposure and response to this missing person's case has taken even the Horry County Police Department by surprise. We've discovered social media may have cursed this investigation from the start.

Never before in Horry County has a single missing person's case generated as much attention as the case surrounding the disappearance of Heather Elvis. Since Elvis went missing on December 17, the case has gained local, state and national media exposure, a Facebook account that has attracted more than 45,000 followers, a reward pot that seems to grow by the week, and people so moved by the family's plight, they've risked their own freedom to continue the search, even if it means bending or breaking the law.

The image of Heather's face on billboards, posters, and fliers on thousands of storefronts are unavoidable from one end of the Grand Strand to the other, and nearly two months after Heather Elvis' disappearance, a simple call to supporters for another search or fundraiser, and hundreds still show up to collect donations and get the word out.
