Sidney Moorer, Tammy Moorer to be charged with murder in Heather Elvis case

Sidney and Tammy Moorer will be charged with murder in connection with the Heather Elvis case.

At a press conference Monday, Horry County Police Chief Saundra Rhodes said due to the two month investigation and the recent search of the Moorer's property, police will charge the couple with murder.

Horry County Solicitor Jimmy Richardson said the charges stem from direct evidence found at the scene and circumstantial evidence from the entire case.

The Moorers will have a bond hearing for the murder charged the week of March 17, according to Rhodes.

Couple to face murder charges in Heather Elvis case

Few details of Elvis’ whereabouts or how she was killed emerged from a press conference Monday at the M.L. Brown Public Safety Building in Conway, but the information released painted a picture of the Moorers being suspects from the start, being followed as the two left the state, keeping Elvis against her will and charging the Moorers with murder without having a body.

Social medial also played a large role in keeping the community informed of searches and vigils for Elvis as well as details about the couple and their interactions with the young woman. Elvis also was the subject of a segment on HLN’s nationally televised program hosted by Nancy Grace and her family appeared on several other national television shows making pleas for information regarding her whereabouts. Large posters, billboards and paper-sized flyers can been seen for miles around Myrtle Beach featuring the woman’s smile, a contact number to help identify her whereabouts and a reward that has reached $30,000.

“Throughout the process of the investigation, when the Moorers did leave the area, we were very much aware of where they were at all times, so we were coordinating with other agencies throughout the course of the investigation,” Rhodes said.

In a Facebook posting on Jan. 17 by Tammy Caison Moorer, which has since been made private, the 41-year-old woman said that her husband had an affair with Heather Elvis and reported she was being harassed by Elvis’s family members about the affair

“We’ve got enough to charge them with murder without a body,” Richardson told The Sun News after the press conference. “It’s always easier if you have a body, but we’ve tried cases several times without a body. The main thing about getting a body now is more about peace for the family.”

Elvis family attends vigil held Monday for missing Heather Elvis

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A prayer vigil was held Monday night for Heather Elvis, the same day that Sidney and Tammy Moorer were charged and accused of murdering the 20-year-old woman who has been missing since mid-December.

Solicitor says releasing more information could harm Heather Elvis case

"We understand and sympathize with the public's desire to know more information about this tragic case. But the fact remains that while the Moorers have been charged with obstruction of justice, indecent exposure, kidnapping and the murder of Heather Elvis, this investigation is ongoing. In the interest of justice for Heather, her family and friends, and the entire Horry County community, we simply cannot risk jeopardizing either the current investigation or future prosecution at this time," the statement reads.

"The 15th Circuit Solicitor's Office commends the work of the Horry County Police Department and the many different law enforcement agencies who have worked tirelessly in this case. We also appreciate the interest and cooperation of the public as we continue to work together with law enforcement. As soon as we are able to release more information without the risk of jeopardizing either the investigation or prosecution, we will do so, as we know it will help answer questions and provide some degree of closure to a grieving family and community."

Texas donor helps pay for Heather Elvis search

Nicole Carney was heartbroken when she learned that Horry County police have charged two people with the murder of Heather Elvis.

Like thousands of others, she had held out hope that Heather Elvis would be coming home to her family.

Carney had played a major role in the search for Elvis over the last couple of months, even though she lives hundreds of miles away in Texas.

Monica Caison, founder of the CUE Center for Missing Persons, a Wilmington, N.C. group that’s assists in missing persons cases, said Carney has been the sole source of funding for CUE’s search for Heather

Murder Charges Filed in Case of Missing South Carolina Woman Heather Elvis

What happened to Heather Elvis?

Police and prosecutors won't tip their hand about what they know regarding the disappearance of the 20-year-old South Carolina woman, whose car was found Dec. 19 at a boat landing near Myrtle Beach, and whose cell phone records led them to a man with whom authorities believe she was once romantically involved with.

But they fear a bad end. Murder charges were filed Monday against that man, Sidney Moorer, 38, and his wife, Tammy, 41, adding to a list of earlier charges against the couple in the case that include kidnapping, obstruction of justice and indecent exposure.
