2004 article, but well worth the read. Some Russian Bride/Mail Order Bride operations are believed to be a form of Human Trafficking. Such a scheme is one of the aspects WSrs have toyed with as a POSSIBILITY in the case of Mariam Makhniashvili, missing from Toronto since September 2009 after immigrating to Canada from the Republic of Georgia:

Two dozen volunteers from around the country gathered inside a Miami conference room earlier this week to prepare for the Super Bowl.

They're not here for the game, though, but to spend several days fanning out through the city to rescue underage girls who have been trafficked to South Florida as sex workers.

``The Super Bowl is obviously a really big deal for prostitution,'' Sandy Skelaney, a program manager at Kristi House, a program for sexually abused children, told the group. ``We have a bunch of girls being brought down by pimps.''

Just as police, hoteliers, restaurateurs and retailers have prepared for the big game, so too have children's advocates. For weeks, volunteers have printed fliers, prepared scripts and organized outreach teams in an effort to identify -- and, with luck -- rescue girls who are being forced into prostitution.

Last year, when the Super Bowl was held in Tampa, the Florida Department of Children & Families took in 24 children who were brought to the city to serve as sex workers, said Regina Bernadin, DCF's statewide human-trafficking coordinator.

The Olympics are starting in British Columbia in a few days, and other than some minor articles on the potential for HT, haven't really seen anything major as to how Vancouver is addressing the issue. I mean, couldn't they at least publicize a number for people to call if they suspect something unusual?

I did see that they are making thousands of condoms available for the World's biggest sporting event. How nice is that, eh?

FWIW, on a personal note, I know a gorgeous 16 y.o. girl who was "invited" to spend a week at Whistler during the Olympics. Of course, her eyes lit up as she was excitedly telling me all about the invite. Needless to say, she will NOT be attending after ol' spoil sport here told her all the ins and outs of HT and the Olympics, and how she was very likely being roped into a bad situation. The creep who "invited" her was a male of questionable rep who has been on my radar for a while in relation to organized crime and HT.

Thanks for that nmk !! I had used that quote when discussing the HT issue a couple of days ago. Sickens the heart, doesn't it?

In researching these cases/issues, I sometimes find myself reduced to a sobbing mess at my desk when I type their names or see their faces ... other times I simply want to rage against the world ... so I can really relate to the responder who said:

"Sometimes I just want to be an ostrige and sometimes I want an AK47."

I did not know how common this was in the USA until Shaniya's case.

There is one in NYC early October (I sent an e-mail to them) I think I will try to raise funds and do this walk.
I have to see what shows up with family. but a walk in NYC for a good cause is the least I can offer them.

Shaniya is not the only child in the world who has been sold. It happens everyday. I mentioned Shaniya because that case made me more aware of this going on so often in our country. Before Shaniya, I had no idea.

As for where it could go, I'll look around and get back to you.

IMO it could go in The Spotlight Forum - For Your Immediate Attention!!! Issues and Cases that NEED your Help Now!!

Or, it could go in The Current Events Forum - there is a great thread there for Bullying. We could have one called Human Trafficking Awareness there.

I just think it is a really important topic that could use more awareness by everybody, not just members. Our guests could see this thread if it were not in a private forum.
