Parents devastated, fear missing 15-year-old was human trafficking target

http://abc6onyourside.com/on-your-side/parents-speak-out-about-human-trafficking

I have removed the girl's name from the story in the quotes. I applaud her parents for speaking out to try to prevent this from happening to other teens, but IMO the media should have protected this girl's identity. This story is really eye-opening, especially the detail about the braces. JMO.
I agree. They also spelled her first name 2 different ways in the article. Smh

[h=1]8 dead, about 30 injured are found in hot semitrailer in Texas in 'horrific' human-trafficking incident[/h]
Eight people were found dead and about 30 others injured inside a brutally-hot semitrailer parked in a Walmart parking lot in San Antonio, Texas in what authorities are calling "a horrific scene."

Police described the incident as an apparent "human trafficking crime."

Authorities became aware of the truck overnight after a Walmart employee, who had been approached by someone who had been in the truck asking for water, notified police of the interaction, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said this morning at a press conference, alongside other officials from the city.

This was brought to my attention by another WS member, Balboa Moon. This case was actually initiated in December 2016. The information below is mixed between a combination of two different articles & http://ktla.com/2017/07/27/2-men-ar...fficking-probe-involving-at-least-13-victims/

A human trafficking ring in was busted by Los Angeles authorities, and they rescued 13 victims—some of whom were only 15 years old. There were 13 female victims—eight of them were juveniles. All of the victims in the case are from Central California.

An investigation was launched after Los Angeles County deputies were sent to an apartment in West Hollywood to follow up on a missing person’s case filed in Tulare County. A missing teen girl and two other adults were found, and the apartment was being used as part of the human trafficking ring.

“Detectives researched the suspects and worked tirelessly to document how they would traffic their victims in plain sight, using the internet and advertising to post their victim for sale on websites," McDonnell said. "In the end, the number of victims is staggering.”

The ongoing investigation encompasses one of the widest-ranging human trafficking cases ever prosecuted on the west coast, according to California Attorney General Xavier Becerra. In the seven months since the case was opened, a statewide coalition of law enforcement agencies has uncovered a conspiracy to exploit and sell young girls across the state on the internet while defrauding the victims, and using stolen identities to buy luxury cars to transport the victims throughout California and in some cases across state lines.

Much was not revealed about the victims, but Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux said comprehensive counseling and rehabilitation services are being administered.
Although Attorney General Becerra mentioned the case against Backpage.com his office is currently prosecuting, it was not clear where on the internet the girls had been advertised. One detective on the case mentioned the website and Craiglist along with popular social media networks Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Kik as making girls vulnerable to exploitation.

Criminals often lure young girls into a criminal network through coercion, threats, being drugged or raped, or "any number of things to basically psychologically control them,” McDonnell said.

The ring spanned three states: California, Nevada, and Texas.

Two people were arrested in the case. Quinton Brown III, 30, of Highland, was charged with 41 felony counts, including human trafficking of minors and pimping. Gerald Lavell Turner, 32, of Fresno, is facing six counts.

Police are still looking for a 32-year-old Los Angeles woman, Mia Maree McNeil, who is facing 12 felony counts including identity theft.

morning gig. can u please post this in Maris thread? Hopefully some of our girls were rescued!

[h=3]Myrtle Beach police arrest two in connection with human trafficking after online ad shows missing girl[/h]
Online records from the MBPD state that Lewis is charged with prostitution and trafficking in persons, while Riley faces counts of trafficking in persons and willfully resisting arrest.

Officers began investigating after receiving information that the family of a missing female juvenile, from North Carolina, saw ads on a social media site advertising the juvenile, according to Crosby.

Man charged in murder of Detroit Marine 'Chef Doug' and human trafficking of 17-year-old girl

Travun Eugen-Jani Baskerville, of Detroit, is accused of killing Calhoun June 1 when they got into an argument at Baskerville's home in the 14600 block of Burgess.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said Baskerville had been engaged in the human trafficking of a 17-year-old girl. That girl called Calhoun on June 1 and arranged to meet him at Baskerville's home. Calhoun went to the home, got into an argument with Baskerville and was killed, the Prosecutor's Office said.

Oregon Child Sex Ring Uncovered: “They’re Worth $5000 A Night”

Investigators in Oregon have discovered a massive child sex ring in which children were sold as sex slaves to high ranking pedophiles for as much as $5,000 a night.

Curry County residents Genevieve Wilson and Jackalene Antunes say they are working to help child victims of human trafficking in Southern Oregon, with very little help from the government.

“There’s not as much money in drugs anymore as there is in human trafficking. They take a young child and on a good night, can make $3,000 to $5,000.”

The young kids are often befriended by a man — although incidences involving women exist, as well — who eventually bring them in under their control.

They reassure a child’s insecurities, drive a wedge between them and friends and family, buy them clothes and ultimately bring them into the underworld of illegal sex trafficking. They keep the children there using threats and abuse.

“I moved her way out in the country or to another city,” one trafficker admitted on the Rebecca Bender Initiative website, where a Grants Pass trafficking victim is trying to educate people about the problem.

“At first, I felt excited to be in a new adventure, a new town,” his survivor said. “After a while, I felt I had no one to turn to, nowhere to go.”

Woman admits trapping missing teen in 'life of sexual slavery'

HACKENSACK - A woman who went by the nickname "China White" pleaded guilty Wednesday to prostituting a 16-year-old girl -- reported missing from Brooklyn -- in North Jersey motels, authorities said.
Jessica Copeland, 29, of Newark, pleaded guilty in Bergen County Superior Court to second-degree facilitating human trafficking, according to N.J. Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino.
Copeland acted as a boss over prostitutes in a ring, which offered escort services and displayed nude or semi-nude photos of young women on websites such as Backpage.com, Porrino said.

The teenage victim appeared on a Backpage.com sex ad with her breasts exposed, Porrino said.
"This defendant threatened a 16-year-old girl with violence to keep her trapped in a hellish life of sexual slavery," Porrino said in a statement.

Oregon Child Sex Ring Uncovered: “They’re Worth $5000 A Night”
I'm so happy to find this thread.
I'm actively involved in several organizations who hunt pedo's and send info of our findings to various agencies.
It is beyond sickening the level of demand and in your face advertising for this.

Such a sad story. :( The link keeps putting it in video mode...
U.S. and Mexican officials both point to a town in central Mexico that for years has been a major source of human trafficking rings and a place where victims are taken before being eventually forced into prostitution. The town is called Tenancingo.

Even though it has a population of about 13,000 it has an oversized reputation when it comes to prostitution and pimping, says Susan Coppedge, who is now the U.S. State Department's Ambassador at Large to Combat Human trafficking, and previously worked at the U.S. Attorney's office in Atlanta.

"That's what the town does. That is their industry," Coppedge says. "And yet in smaller, rural communities the young girls don't have any idea that this is what the town's reputation is, so they are not suspicious of the men who come from there. They think they have got a great future with this person. They think they love and it is the same story of recruitment every time."

When she was 12 she was targeted by a trafficker who lured her away using kind words and a fast car.

The time has come to open this thread. My hope is that more people are reading to discuss the reality of the horror that children are being "sold" to become slaves - not only in other countries - but our country as well.

To start, here is a snip of Marc Klaas' website:

It is estimated that 14,500–17,500 individuals are trafficked into the U.S. each year. However, these numbers pale by comparison to the U.S. citizen victims of Human Sex Trafficking.

* Between 1.6 and 2.8 million children run away annually in the U.S., half of which are girls.
* Within 48 hours of hitting the streets, one third of these children are lured or recruited into the underground world of prostitution or *advertiser censored*.
* The average age at which girls first become victims of prostitution is 12-14.
* For boys, the entry age is 11-13.
* Approximately 55% of street girls engage in formal prostitution.
* Of the girls engaged in formal prostitution, 75% work for a pimp.
* It is estimated that as many as 300,000 American children are working as prostitutes in the U.S.A.
* Many of these children are missing: many have run away or are throwaway children.

We have learned that the U.S.A. is as much a supply country as it is a demand country for human trafficking. In fact, we are supplying much of our own demand. President George W. Bush has committed the United States Government to lead in combating the serious 21st century challenge of Human Trafficking. The best way to lead is always by example. The best example that the U.S.A. can present to its own citizens and the world at large is to acknowledge the extent that human sex trafficking has affected our own society, and then repair the damage. We must seek legislative solutions and change society’s perception. We must impact the victim’s mindset as we rescue and recover them. Finally, we must identify and criminalize the traffickers.

[h=1]Smart speaks on human trafficking[/h]
If community awareness can lead to tips to prevent crimes against individuals, it can help “eradicate human trafficking.”

That’s why Elizabeth Smart and the Fight to End Exploitation were at Carthage College on Friday.
Smart, an American child safety activist and contributor for ABC News, started a conversation with several hundred members of the local community about human trafficking.

It was a discussion framed by the life experiences of Smart, one of the nation’s most high-profile child kidnapping victims in recent memory. She has lent her support and celebrity to help spotlight the dangers of human trafficking and how to begin fighting it.
The challenge can seem “overwhelming,” Smart said, but it has to start somewhere.

North Carolina teen missing for 2 months found during prostitution sting in Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Parents reported their teenage daughter missing two months ago in North Carolina, and now they’ve been reunited with the girl after she was found during a prostitution sting in Tennessee.

According to WLOS, police arrested three suspects during the operation: 27-year-old Timothy King, 20-year-old Jesse McMinn and 20-year-old Tabitha Banks.

Deputies from Tennessee’s Knox County made the discovery after responding to an ad on the Backpage.com website. An undercover deputy met the suspects at a Holiday Inn after making an appointment for the “two girl special.”
Investigators found the missing underage teen and took her to a juvenile detention center to be reunited with her family.

Her parents reported her missing two months ago and later told authorities that she’d run away.

King is charged with human trafficking. Banks and McMinn face prostitution charges.
