I don't think they lock you in, maybe close the doors. It would be a fire hazard to lock people inside, besides, smokers need access to outside the shelter.

I think you are right. Ive been trying to find the rules about leaving and there is hardly any information about it. I did find one shelter that said they discouraged people from leaving during the storm. So I think you may be right that they probably cannot force people to stay. Which is a good thing because it would add to stress.

Great advice and information. So many things they list that I would have never thought about.

Im wondering if they also lock you in and wont let you leave for certain periods of the storm when its really bad. So you have to be prepared for a long stay in case they dont let people leave.

During the hurricane last year in Florida, it was a big deal to have a place for the smokers to go. It was quite a big deal!

Is it my imagination or is there less interest here this hurricane season? With powerful storms approaching Texas and Florida last year, these threads were humming with activity and discussion. By all accounts Florence could be as bad as last season's big storms so where is everybody?

I've noticed the same thing with the fires out west. I don't mean on WS, but in general.

I think with all the difficult news (without getting into the politics of that....just stating we have a lot of difficult news lately no matter what "side" you're on) makes people tired of difficult news? There is only so much that can be absorbed?

IDK, but I've noticed too.

When people are told to evacuate, how far are they told to go? And also, are there shelters set up for people who don't have family/friends to stay with? I recall the stadium in New Orleans for Katrina (not good memories of that disaster) - are there places inland for Florence evacuees to camp out for awhile or is everyone on their own for finding shelter?

I'm on the east coast but not on Florence's projected path. Everyone who is in the path is certainly on my mind.

The shelters are there - which is awsome in a wind event .

This is gonna be horrible - inland flooding makes the shelters useless

and i think the biggest fear is FEMA funding was slashed so I am not sure what we are gonna see for these poor people

look at what a mess sandy is and we had more money boy oh boy

I agree i think as a nation we are spent -- we are news junkies; for the masses they have zoned out a long time ago

Were going down the tubes - and they are on their cell phones or playing with machine gun videos thinking about sex and career and what to post

but it does seem like we are pretty powerless these days

- sad really

I think it’s hard to fathom the devastation from a hurricane for people unless they have experienced it for themselves.
People were surprised when I told them Harvey’s devastation hit many places other than Houston and they were shocked when they saw the pictures.
I hope everyone makes it safe.

let me just tell you a thing a two!

During Irma if you tried to mess with me about smoking during Irma -- you would be dealing with a cat 6 hurricane named CARIIS --

he can make Irma look look like a tropical depression!

Do not thread carefully -- swim carefully !

and I think in a lot of peoples minds we tend to focus on wind event

as the climate gets worse we are seeing more flood events after landfall

but the first thought tends to be wind destruction

I wish people would go either north or south depending on where they are as opposed to IN

IN is where hell is going to be get out of IN if your in go more in

if your near actual landfall bands go up or down

the folks in the typical flood areas are used to running in and that helps

but the stall is going to be the real disaster

go more in or up or down

they already had a couple shelters ready and then learned about the stall and had to shut them
