I don't think it is a prank. There are feral chickens all over Key West ~ and they've got a mean streak.

IMO, someone is trying to save them, at the risk of some nasty pecks.

It is better than drowning or being pummeled to death by debris.

Thanks for your input too, bluedivergirl. I'm not from Florida, so I had no idea there were feral chickens all over Key West.

So bless whomever went out of their way to try to save some of them, even if their methods seem weird. It was something I had never seen before, or even thought about, to be honest.

Hope the chickens make it okay...

Local forecaster (Jacksonville) was just asked by someone who evacuated to Tallahassee if they should we come back home.

His answer: Yes. Head back now.

Tallahassee is where our IT guy at work headed to with his 3 little ones (single father, joint custody) I hope he and his children stay safe

Thanks for explaining the chicken picture. I'm sure it's uncomfortable for them, but once they are released they will forget. It's truly is awesome that a person cares enough to try too save some of them, even if it looks freaky to us.

It looks like they are wrapped in newspapers then taped. I hope they don't get too hot.

You know it is awful when a category 3 hurricane doesn't sound so scary. I hope everyone stays safe and warm and dry.

So many people did. That was the advice being given.

But, I really question the suggestion they should get on the road again.

Doesn't sound like it will be that great here. Major rain fall with flooding and wide spread power outages still forecast.

The NHC forecast has shifted further west, with two landfall in Florida: Naples area and Tampa area. It is possible to bring major hurricane winds into GA.

Even Key West's famous chickens are leaving town ahead of Hurricane Irma, according to locals.

A photo posted on the Key West Finest Facebook page shows roosters and chickens wrapped in newspaper "burritos" and placed in the back seat of a car.

Dubbed by locals as “gypsy chickens,” the free-roaming birds are former backyard chickens and roosters who were released when *advertiser censored*-fighting became illegal in the area. While some locals may find them to be an annoyance, for tourists, they are part of Key West's charm.

I don't understand those people! Yes, the weather is interesting. But watch it from shelter, on a webcam of which there are many!

Anyone know what the chances are for Irma to head further west into the Gulf? TIA

I had read that the cranes would be free swinging like weathervanes. They had been reinforced at the base but the arm would feel swing. Going to look for that article.
