Delay Approved in Collin Richards’ Murder Trial

The trial of the man accused of killing Iowa State University golf star Celia Barquin Arozamena will be delayed until September. The trial is scheduled to begin September 10th in Story County, just a week shy of the one-year anniversary of Barquin Arozamena’s death.

Because it is not a crime to be homeless. Any American has a Constitutional right to be free from unlawful detention. You can' be rounded up and thrown in Jail for not having a roof to call your own. Here in America you have a Constutionaly protected right to live on the street, or Golf course, if you want to. The trick is to not break any laws that you can be arrested for. Though in New Orleans you could be arrested for "obstructing the sidewalk". A great catch-all charge for when the Police want to arrest you, but don't quite have anyone one thing to pin on you!

However, better Social Services coordination with Police and Jails might provide for placement in shelter, or group homes, or Shelters, or subsidized housing to reduce the problem. If you can't jail 'em, you need to house 'em. Of course, some municpaliites give the homeless $20 and put them on a Bus heading out of town.

I agree with you the only exception is you do not have a right to trespass on private land to live there.

Thank you for the link to the article; a very good, thought-provoking piece, indeed. However, I couldn't hold back the tears as I read about Celia. Such a wonderful young woman and such a preventable tragedy! I can't imagine how any mother, regardless of how terrible her child's behavior, just kicking him out of the house at age 14. Collin likely needed some kind of residential treatment program; instead, he was left to wander the streets homeless, spiral even farther downward, and become other people's problem? Reminds me of people who dump their unwanted pets in another part of town. Sadly, his situation is not unique. MOO.

The homeless man accused of killing a former Iowa State University golf star wrote a letter to the judge indicating he may plead guilty.

"I would like to take care of my case, I would like to do whatever it is to move forward ending the case ple of guilty if it takes that thank you & sorry," Collin Richards wrote in the letter, which included spelling errors. "I do plead guilty."

Prosecutors fighting motion to move trial for man accused killing ISU golfer
[...]

The Des Moines Register reports that Collin Richards, who is charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing last September of Celia Barquín Arozamena, is seeking to have his trial moved to another county. His attorney says in a motion that pre-trial publicity would keep Richards from getting a fair trial in Story County.

Prosecutors filed a response Tuesday saying Richards couldn't show that coverage of the crime was prejudicial.

A hearing on Richards' motion has been set for May 6. His trial is set for September.

Change of venue granted for trial in death of Iowa State golfer

AMES, Iowa (KCRG) - The defense in a murder trial for the killing of an Iowa State golfer was granted a change of venue request today by a judge.

The trial of Collin Richards, 22, was moved to Winneshiek County today after defense attorneys successfully argued that pre-trial coverage of the crime he stands accused of would have tainted the potential jury pool.

Richards faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of Celia Barquin Arozamena on September 17, 2018. She was playing a round of golf at an Ames golf course near the Iowa State Campus when she was stabbed to death. Arozamena was a stand-out golfer for the university's golf team.

Prosecutors fought to keep the trial in Story County, arguing that Richards hadn't shown coverage of the crime was prejudicial. The judge disagreed.

Richards' trial is set to begin September 10.

I know why we have rights to a fair and unbiased jury at trial. But 's like this that take the life of a promising young woman who had very high life goals and had done all the things necessary to achieve those goals. Really pisses me off, all for his own evil fantasies, he ambushed her and snuffed out her bright light.

I'm still seething mad over this murder....grrrrr

I guess I don't see the obvious link as to how a residential treatment program would have prevented him from deciding to rape and murder an attractive female.

Yes, he had drug problems, was homeless, had problems adapting to his mother's rules. But he didn't kill his drug suppliers, his fellow homeless, or his mother. He killed an attractive female.

I don't think it's a fair assumption that if a man is clean and sober, has a home and a decent connection with his Mom, he will never kill an attractive female. Because they still do it. It happens over and over and over again.

"Nine-months after attacking and stabbing a former Iowa State University golfer to death on an Ames golf course, Collin Richards admitted his guilt in court on Friday. Richards entered a guilty plea to a count of First Degree Murder for the death of Celia Barquin Arozamena...

Earlier this year Richards sent the judge in his case a handwritten note asking to change his plea to guilty. The judge didn't accept that plea but urged Richards to meet with his attorneys. Today at a hearing in Nevada, Richards entered a formal guilty plea. He will be sentenced on August 23rd. He faces a mandatory sentence of life with the possibility of parole."
