In every case, there are one or more people who just can't resist talking to the media. Or who are too polite to say "no comment" when approached by the media.
You can't infer how important a witness is by their willingness to talk to the media. While LE may not like it, in most cases they cannot forbid a witness from speaking to the media (free speech rights).
My guess would be that Mr Carpenter may not be a crucial witness since his account is so vague as to time. TG may or may not be an important witness; it's too soon to say with the information available to me.
