I imagine that the reporter extrapolated from D’s confused idea that someone was playing with the dog, upstairs. But I agree that the reporter should have stayed with known facts—there’s at least 3 ways to interpret what D said.

MOO

Thinking about it now I would image he did check that closed door(dog) whether it was before or after?

I think there is some educated guessing going on in that account, but it seems reasonable to me. I feel like there are more specifics (time) re: the Door Dash delivery that we haven't heard.
It definitely seems reasonable, but I don't like reporter speculation without it being identified as such. If they felt they had to include that, they should have included a qualifier like "he COULD HAVE checked on Goncalves room at this time". But being stated like a fact in a purported timeline of facts rubs me the wrong way, and makes me less likely to trust the rest of the article. The only reason I picked up on that is because I read the PCA. If I didn't know as much about the case, I would assume that was a known fact.

Would he have a private orientation scheduled just for him or a grad student orientation?
The orientation would likely be for all the students in his department, together. Or the orientation could have been with the College of Graduate Studies (whatever it is called at WSU). If it was the latter, it would be a larger group and for graduate students from a number of departments/colleges across the university.

And it could have been both (one orientation for the department, and the other for the Graduate Studies College). In my experience, they are usually scheduled close to the start of the semester (one week or two weeks before the semester officially begins) in order to give everyone time to arrive, not everyone will arrive in June or July.

Even new faculty orientations are usually held just two weeks before the fall semester begins to allow for everyone to arrive in time. New faculty orientation is held by the Provost's office two weeks before the semester begins, and department/college meetings one week before semester begins. JMO from my experience.

EBM to add some info

Maybe I am getting my east and west mixed up? I thought east bound was from King toward those apartments next to the house. JMO

I think you're correct. King runs North/South and Queen dead ends into King; a car going west on Queen would have to turn one way or the other on King; a car on King that turns onto Queen would be going east for sure (towards the apartments).

Maybe he was excited to arrive early, (July,) be on his own, maybe for the first time in his life, make a few friends, find a few girls to stalk, learn where the best vegan restaurants were.

MOO
Yes, just the normal stuff. whew! :)

I checked on google maps. I can't see past houses and trees the direction he was driving. Unless there is some clear spot along the way? On the other side of the housing is the highway. Google maps gives a street view and you can turn it in the direction of travel. Cool. JMO

Hi, Nila.

Someone may have already answered this question for you. I'm always behind in the threads.

I moved your map's point of view down the road a little ways. Where he may have been was in the clearing that overlooks the Police Dept in the valley down below.

Google Maps

The odd things just keep adding up. But, I can't figure out what they add up to. Going so fast (to me) seems to indicate trying to meet a preset deadline.

I haven't read that it was a *great* rate of speed, just that the Elantra was "speeding." To me, that means anything over the speed limit (which was 30 or 35 mph IIRC for that stretch of road). He would have been coming in from a section of road that had a higher speed limit, IMO. I assume he's going maybe 40 mph, just as an hypothesis - we do not know from the clerk's statement that he was super speeding.

I do think he had a timeline for himself, though. He may even have decided that 4 am was the right time to start ("Witching Hour").

Back to a couple of ideas we have discussed: that this doesn’t seem like the acts of a first-time killer and that universities seem like good places for stalking (we’ve talked about how college students can be a bit clueless and how there a lot of people coming and going on college campuses), I wonder if there have been any unsolved attacks/stalking incidents maybe (nothing as severe as this) at any local colleges/universities in PA where BK came from.

Now that I’m writing this, I’m thinking that it’s probably not likely…. So did he move across the country because he knew he would have the anonymity he needed to pull this off? Did he have a plan in his mind even before he moved?

It does make me want to do some digging about crimes around nearby PA colleges/universities though.

Here's the part about possible stalking from the affidavit. I'm far from a cell data expert but to me it reads that LE estimated that his cell phone pinged off the same tower/s that residents of 1122 would utilize. Would that be considered stalking? idk

https://s3.documentcloud.org/docume...hibit-a-statement-of-brett-payne_redacted.pdf (page 16)

On December 23, 2022 pursuant to that search warrant, I received historical records for the 8458 Phone from AT&T from the time the account was opened in June 2022. After consulting with CAST SA, I was able to determine estimated locations for the 8458 Phone from June 2022 to present, the time period authorized by the court. The records for the 8458 Phone show the 8458 Phone utilizing cellular resources that provide coverage to the area of 1122 King Road on at least twelve occasions prior to November 13,2022. All of these occasions, except for one, occurred in the late evening and early morning hours of their respective days.

One of these occasions, on August 21, 2022, the 8458 Phone utilized cellular resources providing coverage to the King Road Residence from approximately 10:34 p.m. to 11:35 p.m.

I don't think that someone in and out that quickly would have time to remove listening devices so would you speculate that they are currently in the hands of LE?

If he did put a listening device, I'd assume retrieving it would be one of the first things he did in the house.

Not that we know that he had one. There could be evidence at his apartment (videos) of its use, if there is one. Which somehow wouldn't surprise me in this case.

Would he have a private orientation scheduled just for him or a grad student orientation?
To me, if he had a private meeting with a professor, that would be an appointment with a professor.

Graduate student orientation is usually done as a group and introduces everyone to each other, but also such issues as where to go to get forms to change one's program of study; how to answer the questions at registration time and how to register; how to get a parking permit, etc, etc.

I've never heard of anyone getting this information doled out to them individually. Usually, there's a student handbook passed out and everyone is told to read it.

Orientation usually includes the Admin Assist for the department in question (a person all grad students will get to know very well) and the professor who is assigned the responsibility of overall grad student relations in the department.

It can obviously include others, such as previous years' grad students.

RBBM
What difference would it make if he took responsibility? Outcome is likely the same.

IMO,<modsnip> he is unable to feel anything a normal person feels. I don't think a man who acts out in this way because of perceived slights or wrongs by biology (VS ), inability to connect meaningfully with others/bullying & whatever other "reasons" is a man who is capable of seeing any real truth about himself.

I think there is serious mental illness at work in this man's life from an early age. That is tragic but doesn't reduce his culpability.

Any plea he make will only be strategic as to what he thinks serves him best. All those he has victimized (4 dead, their families & friends, the larger community) do not matter to him at all & never will.

JMO & harsh assessment
<modsnip> my post was MOO. It was expressed as a hope not a prediction. I feel that if BK truly did take responisbility for his crimes (if he is guilty) that would not only help him but also the surviving victims/families of the deceased. That's MOO.

Edited, spelling

Oh, also, just an interesting observation:

IMO, in all of the discussions back in the day about how come they rule the exes and whonots out so quickly, none of us ever suggested that they might have an eyewitness. I know they strongly suggested the roommates were asleep, but it could have also been, say, a neighbour. I cannot recall this idea ever being thrown out there.

MOO. I might be mistaken.
IIRC, no one was allowed to speculate anything about the surviving roommates. They quickly became off limits.<modsnip>

Totally MOO from watching the threads.

Given his phone pings put him in the area at least 12 times before the actual murders I don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility that he scoped the house out thoroughly and was aware of entrances/exits. IMO he did not just show up there that night and not have a plan on how to get in/out - he already knew.
Exactly. In his casing of the home, I bet during one (or more) of his visits he parked his car and walked around the area. Lots of people live there and since it's a college town, it wouldn't be odd to see someone his age walking around late at night. If anyone saw him, they'd likely think he was a resident of the area just heading home for the night.

I hope the house gets torn down tbh

There was much discussion about a house in Calgary where several college students were stabbed to death at a house party. The owner couldn't afford to lose the value of the property because of a mortgate, the city wasn't interested in buying the property and the community couldn't round up funding.

The owner did sell but insisted that the murders be fully disclosed to all potential buyers and ultimately, a young Christian man bought the home and has used the property to house young people needing a new start in life. Initially, people focused on the ugly history of the property but over time, the focus has become about all the lives that a young man was able to save by purchasing a large home at a very reasonable price.

He seemed to be driving around like a fairly normal person up to the point in the PCA where he "speeds off." I think his car is his sanctuary.
Sorry, my point was more about why would he not sit still and stalk the house if he was waiting for lights off to attack. This driving around could make him miss important details (like, say, someone coming over), exposes him to cameras, makes noise and therefore might expose him to witnesses - and I cannot figure out the benefits. All MOO.
and makes me less likely to trust the rest of the article
There are at least a few factual mistakes there: once they use D-s last name for BK and there was a typo in at least one time on a graph (IIRC it was 1:20 vs 4.20). I think I caught one more.
The DoorDash time (4:00) is stated in the PCA.
I don't think it is. Page 3:
"This is with the exception of Kenrodle, who received a DoorDash order at the residence at approximately 4:00."
Could be anything from 3.45 to 4.15 for all we know.

I hope so too and while I can't speak of the other case, the knife in this case isn't intended to give victims much time or opportunity for defence.
I certainly understand that, but we do know that at least one victim, and perhaps more than one, had defensive wounds, implying that they were able to at least get a hand or hands up perhaps. I am inclined to believe that perhaps two victims may have been awake enough to offer some resistance, but that is jmo. DM described the man leaving as wearing dark clothes and a mask that covered his mouth and nose, but she never mentioned that he was wearing gloves. Was he? I think many of us assume so, but we do not know that. He may have had them on initially, and may have taken them off to better grip the knife when attacking. The assailant could have left skin cells on victims, or if not wearing gloves, could possibly have left some of his own blood, if he happened to nick himself. Considering the sloppy mistakes that we have already learned that he made, I would not be at all surprised to find that he left his DNA on a victim and elsewhere in the house. JMO

Whatever is going on there, and I have no idea what it is, it's more than just waiting for the DoorDash guy to leave. This is what the PCA says:

His initial three passes by 1122 King Road began at 3:29, long before the 4:00 DoorDash delivery. His fourth pass began when he:
  • Entered the area at 4:04
  • Proceeded east on King Road, past 1122
  • Stopped and turned around at 500 Queen Road #52 (those long apartment buildings)
  • Drove back, stopped in front of 1122
  • Tried unsuccessfully to park or turn around there
  • Proceeded back westbound to the corner intersection
  • Did a three point turn
  • Drove back eastbound toward 1122
  • Next seen leaving the area at a high rate of speed at 4:20
This is not only driving like a crazy person, it compresses the timeline to a mind-boggling degree. Between 4:04 and 4:20 he did all that crazy driving - driving past, stopping, turning around, driving back, stopping, trying to park, trying to turn around, aborting, driving to the end of the street, three point turning, driving back, finding somewhere to park, going inside, murdering four people, going back to his car, and driving away. All in 16 minutes or less.

And he couldn't have made himself more conspicuous if he tried.
Sounds frenzied, right? Desperately on a mission.

I don't think it is. Page 3:
"This is with the exception of Kenrodle, who received a DoorDash order at the residence at approximately 4:00."

They interviewed the driver. There is no reason to suspect they didn't have the time pinpointed fairly accurately. At any rate, the poster I was responding to suggested we had not heard the 4:00 time before it appeared in that article. Obviously the writer of the article got the time from the same source we did - the PCA.
