Idaho Murder Suspect 'Complied Right Away' and 'Knew Exactly Why He Had Been Arrested': Source

Bryan Kohberger, 28, was arrested in Pennsylvania in connection with the killings of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves

"He complied right away," says a police source who was part of the extradition process. "He knew exactly why he had been arrested. There was no 'What did I do?' There wasn't any 'You've got the wrong guy.'"

Instead, the police source says, Kohberger largely remained silent, offering up few clues to his state of mind. "He made small talk, but nothing really of substance."

Kohberger was read his Miranda rights during his arrest, and cannot be questioned about the case without an attorney present. He didn't speak directly to officers about the case, but the police source says that he did make an offhand comment about it.

"He did say, 'It's really sad what happened to them,' but he didn't say anything more," the source says. "He's smarter than that."

The 911 call alerting law enforcement to the murders of the four University of Idaho students has long been shrouded in mystery after Moscow Police said that the caller initially reported “an unconscious individual” in the home.

[..]

Since then, questions have persisted around why the caller reported an “unconscious individual” when officials described the crime scene as one of the worst they had ever seen.

A potential reason for the mysterious 911 call has now been revealed in Air Mail’s article “The Eyes of a Killer”.

Civilian employees at Whitcom 9-1-1, an agency in Pullman, Washington, handle the 911 calls to the Moscow Police Department as well as several other agencies, according to the report.

The agency is severely understaffed to such an extent that the dispatchers’ guild has previously warned that “our ability to uphold public safety is at risk”.

Under standard protocol, when callers “are agitated” the dispatcher will often assign the call with the generic label of “unconscious person” rather than waste valuable time and resources trying to gather specific details.

ABC News correspondent Kayna Whitworth has extensively reported on the Moscow murder investigation. In an exclusive interview with 4 News Now, Whitworth said the 20/20 special will spotlight the victims’ parents, and include testimony from Madison Mogen’s father.

“When I sat with some of Kaylee and Xana’s friends the other night, there was a lot of laughing and shared stories, and there were a lot of tears,” she explained. “Steve and Kristi Goncalves have been at the forefront of all this. They’ve become pillars of strength in that community. Also, in our 20/20 special you’ll really hear from Madison’s father for the first time.”

Kohberger was a Ph.D. student in the criminology department at Washington State University when he was arrested. According to Whitworth, his educational background was not a surprise to investigators.

“It was really surprising to learn that he was so highly educated,” she said. “But one police source I spoke with said it wasn’t surprising to them as they were going through this investigation.”

[..]

Kohberger waived his right to a timely preliminary hearing at the Latah County Court on Thursday, Jan. 13. His new preliminary hearing date is now set for June 26 at 9 a.m.

This week's episode of 20/20 focuses on the case and all of the harrowing details that have been uncovered during the investigation. The special, titled "Horror in Idaho; The Student Murders," airs Friday, Jan. 13 from 9:01 – 11 p.m. ET on ABC and is available to stream on Hulu the next day.

Idaho murders – latest news: Bryan Kohberger’s chilling past comments come to light

Chilling online comments made by suspected killer Bryan Kohberger when he was a teenager have resurfaced, revealing how he felt “blank”, had “no emotion” and felt “little remorse” years before he allegedly murdered four University of Idaho students in a brutal knife attack.

Back in 2011, when he was 16, Mr Kohberger spoke about his mental health struggles in an online forum and described seeing “nothing” when he looked at his own family.

“As I hug my family, I look into their faces, I see nothing, it is like I am looking at a video game, but less,” he wrote.

Speaking to the New York Post over the weekend, Yachmetz said he believes the brutality of the murders and Kohberger's history of social challenges may point to a possible motive.

'I believe a continued stabbing of a victim indicates ... an uncomfortable rage ad extreme anger,' he said, noting that Kohberger has been descried as 'socially awkward with a long history of interpersonal problems.

'I think he may have developed an incel complex,' Yachmetz said, 'The murders may have ben an effort to assert some type of dominance.'

Murder victim Kaylee Goncalves didn't live in the three-story Idaho home the night she was brutally killed along with three others.

Kaylee, 21, had moved out of the off-campus home weeks before she was murdered, but returned to Moscow to visit her childhood best friend Maddie Mogen, also 21, and show off her new Range Rover.

The parents of Kaylee told Dateline that their daughter was set to graduate early and move to Texas for an IT job.

(NewsNation) — Some internet sleuths and social media influences have been helpful in finding information about the Moscow, Idaho killings, and one TikTok creator is using her platform to share the story of one of the victims.

Kaylee Goncalves, who was killed Nov. 13 along with three other University of Idaho students, was a fan of Olivia Vitale, a TikToker who reached out to the Goncalves family after hearing about the killings. The Goncalves family trusted Vitale to make a documentary that shares Kaylee’s story.

“This is a personal connection, and we’ve been in touch in the past few weeks and they’ve welcomed me into their home,” Vitale said Friday on “CUOMO.” “It’s been an honor to meet them and help bring awareness to their daughter’s case.”
