If he didn't die from his father's direct violence, he could have died from something like exposure. His father was sleeping outdoors. But I'm just speculating, I don't know any more than you do.

MOO
That's my point. It's quite different to murder his own child and to cause is death by neglecting him due to leaving him outside. Charges would reflect that but there are no charges for Zeke yet.

Adding to this: if he was high and/or in psychosis, he probably wasn't thinking ahead enough to make sure he had diapers, formula, etc, let alone a long-term gameplan to stay hidden. Zeke may have died from dehydration, starvation, etc.

Oh my goodness this article says she was also expecting a second child. :(
Did she know she was pregnant, or did they find it in the autopsy? ETA - I see now that she was 28 weeks along.

In Iowa, where I live, if a fetus of any age dies in the commission of a crime, even if the mother does not, the perp can be convicted of "nonconsensual termination of a human pregnancy."

That .

Count three states that Best killed 10-month-old Zeke Best by “inflicting an injury on Zeke Gregory Best’s neck using a knife and thereby causing his death.” It appears from the indictment, officials are unsure exactly when or where Zeke died

So, not neglect or hypothermia. He cut that baby's throat. Despicable.

I found myself feeling the smallest bit of empathy for Mr. Best, thinking oh my gosh, when he comes to himself he will be so upset that he has done this horrible thing. I am convinced he suffered a psychotic break either drug induced or not.

But now, knowing he cut little Zeke's neck . . . I just can't find even an iota of empathy. I hope he recovers his faculties and suffers horribly every day for the rest of his life with the knowledge of what he has done to his beautiful family.

I find myself incapable of empathy, as well. Even if he was crazy and even if he was unable to organize care for the infant, that was already bad enough. But now that we know these details, it's even worse and I devoutly hope that he is restored to sanity and has to face what he did.

We will likely never know if he had experienced brief psychotic reactions in the past, while in the company of family. Sounds like family annihilation to me. And many a "nice cheerful man" or someone with a reputation as a quiet, friendly guy - has murdered.

IMO

Below is the joint news release from the Teton and Bonneville County Prosecuting Attorney offices:

An indictment by a Teton County grand jury was unsealed Tuesday charging Jeremy Albert Best with three counts of murder in the first degree for the killings of Kali Jean Best, her unborn fetus and Zeke Gregory Best, as well as three enhancements for use of a firearm or other deadly weapon in the commission of the three murders.
The indictment supersedes the amended criminal complaint against Jeremy Best in Teton County case number CR41-23-0877, and as a result, there will not be a preliminary hearing.
Under the circumstances of this case, Idaho law allows Best to be prosecuted in Teton County for all three murders, even though one of the victims was found in Bonneville County.
Prosecutors and law enforcement in Teton and Bonneville counties, as well as the Idaho State Police and other law enforcement agencies, are cooperating in the investigation and prosecution of this case.
Prosecutors from Teton and Bonneville Counties ask the public to refrain from uninformed speculation regarding this case, including the Defendant’s mental state, the facts surrounding the killings, or otherwise.
“Misinformed or uninformed posts and articles can promulgate a prejudicial narrative among potential jurors and can become exhibits in motions to change venue,” Teton County Prosecuting Attorney Bailey Smith said.
According to Randy Neal, Bonneville County Prosecuting Attorney, “excessive pre-trial publicity can lead to changes in venue which deprive both the State and the Defendant from having an impartial jury of peers selected from the local community.”
“I understand that people want and deserve facts about what happened, but we implore the public to be patient and wait for facts to come out through the open court process,” Smith said.
The case will now be scheduled for an arraignment before a district judge; however, the date and time of the arraignment are not yet known.

I have major depression, no psychosis and after suicide attempts I was in for 2 weeks afterwards, even though I was completely coherent. I don’t understand how they think someone walking into a store naked was of sound mind….

Right? And even if they couldn't hold him because he was able to pull himself together enough at the ER, it was still a chargeable offense - and he should have gotten treatment at the jail psychiatric facility.

O.K. My comment: "Let's just get rid of him" was very uncharitable. But, I'm sorry. I do believe that he was under the influence of drugs, perhaps "self medicating". That is a choice -- a difficult one and beyond one's control, in some cases. And, like drinking and driving -- drugging and parenting don't mix. But, if you are under the effects and have no self-control, this is where all reasoning flies out the window. And, fertility knows no bounds -- and children can't pick their parents.

Walking into a store, unclothed, is not something that a person "in his right mind" would do. That should be a reason to take them to the nearest mental health treatment facility.

How incredibly sad to hear. I can't help but wonder if it was somehow an accident.

They have to be admitted by a doctor - so he was taken to the ER, where he probably pulled it together just enough to evade an involuntarily hold (which are difficult to get).

I feel like I posted this before - but I don't see my post (probably didn't hit post). Anyway, the alternative would have been to take him to jail (as indecent exposure is a chargeable offense) and have him be seen by the jail psychiatrist. That's how things work where I live (and in most places).

But that's not what happened here. He was criminally "holdable" (chargeable) but not psychiatrically holdable. Being naked is not "threat on the life of oneself or others." It can be a stupid, drunken prank. In this case, it was likely psychosis - but that's not a reason, by itself, to involuntarily put someone in a psychiatric ward (which looks just like a jail and keeps the person there for 72 hours - in jail, a person could be out again sooner, if psychiatrically sound).

So he was taken to the ER, but didn't meet the standard for a purely psychiatric admission. I can't even count how many times I've seen this or how many questions I asked. Merely shouting "I'm going to kill [myself] [someone else] is not enough for a 5150.

But it is enough for jail. And most jails have psychiatrists on call - although it might take a day to be seen. That's what should have happened, IMO. But for it to actually happen, police need lots of training. IME.

You're allowed to not be "in your right mind" without being taken to a mental health facility. If you're breaking laws, you should be in jail. But there's no reason to put every person who is acting odd in a mental health facility IMO

I’d really like to know what caused this to happen. It’s terrifying to me. If it was just a mental break, who’s to say it couldn’t happen to any one of us at any point? Of course we’d like to think we’d never do it, but I’m sure he didn’t either. Right? Ugh I don’t know. It’s terrible and terrifying. I will hope it was drugs, because at least then there’s a concrete reason. JMO

I'll tell this little story again.
Last January my 88 year old father stood up and asked my mother who the hell she was and what was she doing in his house? A switch was flipped in his head-he became violent, more verbally and emotionally abusive than normal, and did not recognize family. 911 was called. He needed restraints.
No neurologist or his bevy of other specialist doctors could diagnose anything.
For 2 weeks he remained in restraints on and off, recognizing some family, talking nonsense or about his working years in Philadelphia. He would call out to old coworkers.
It was exhausting.
Then, the fog lifted, and he came back to his old self. Completely.
When I hear the stories of a younger person where they are not in their right mind, I think drugs, too.
But you never know. Psychosis CAN happen to anyone.

And yes, I do believe he could have killed my mother that day.
And not remembered doing it.
