Jussie Smollett hires Michael Cohen's criminal defense attorney

Empire star Jussie Smollett has hired Michael Cohen's high-powered criminal defense attorney, as the police investigation into the attack he reported last month took a sudden shift amid allegations of a hoax.

Attorney Michael Monico, a former federal prosecutor in the Northern District of Illinois, revealed in a radio interview on Thursday in Chicago that he is representing Smollett.

Monico, speaking on WGN's The Roe Conn Show, did not reveal how long he has been representing Smollet or in what capacity. Monico last month took over as co-counsel for Cohen, President Donald Trump's former lawyer.

It came as police in Chicago suddenly released two Nigerian extras on Smollett's show, who had previously been described as suspects in the attack, saying that 'new evidence' had emerged in their interrogations that requires further detective work.

Um, the time is right NOW. This is starting to smell more and more like a big ol' publicity stunt! Stop the drama, we want the TRUTH!

My #CPD sources telling me the same: detectives r investigating the possibility that Smollett staged the incident w/ the help of the brothers, who according to their attorney know the actor from working on the show & also have spent time with him at a gym

The question I'm waiting to be answered is: staged by whom? By Jussie? His manager? I think we'll have the answer soon.

^^^this. This is why I believe that anyone who makes a false allegation, with the intent of inciting potential violence should be charged with a federal crime.

Now, Mr. Smollett is still considered a victim of a crime. That being said, why did he give interviews and try to make this a National political crisis? It was a situation in Chicago. That lasted less than 60 seconds. How did this become a media circus?

BBM. AMEN to this, and this has been my main point since the day this was first reported. The weather was so extreme that night that the odds of this incident happening as described are very low. I am not victim blaming. I am not saying it didn't happen (because we don't know the details just yet). I am saying the odds of 2 people hanging around on a bench just waiting for the victim (let alone the splashing of bleach and the pseudo lynching causing only bruises and a scratch) on this particular night are very, very low.

It’s a huge department, so it’s extremely difficult to keep the leaks at bay.

All these news organizations have sources, and in most cases, multiple sources within the department.

That’s why the leak that the investigation had turned, is likely true (this was suspicious from the get-go though).

If multiple trustworthy people are all saying the same thing, then these organizations would have no problem reporting something that the higher ups in the department are denying.
