Unlike others, though, I'm not giving Jake a pass just because he was in the military.
There are troubled people both in the military and in the general population as well. I believe that there is a certain group of people attracted to the military for the violence (not presuming Jake is one of these!), and, there is a group of people who are changed by their experience in the field of battle (even though they are good people to begin with). Let's face it, most of us could not imagine what they experience and how difficult it must be to cope with those memories. (And, of course there are those that come out of the arena of war unscathed. Bless their souls.)
I personally wouldn't find it shocking to find out that he was implicated in Jessica's death. Yes, it is possible that he is a sad victim in this case, but I'm just not feeling it.
It was stated that Jake took a gun along for protection while they were camping. I know it might just be a cultural thing, but that would be a very rare scenario where I live. Most people wouldn't go camping with firearms.
In the end, I don't think there is a "good" outcome in this case. If Jake is the perpetrator, then that is incredibly sad. If he is a victim, then that is equally disturbing.
I pass along my deepest condolences to both Jessica's and Jake's loved ones.
