Add to this that there were no defensive wounds, no signs of a struggle; the three people initially suspected were cleared.

I have got to think that suicide has become the most likely explanation.

If, and this is a big if, this does turn out to be a suicide, I'm still very sad for the officer and his family. But I'm also a bit upset, thinking about all of the wasted resources, the chance that someone wrongly suspected could have been prosecuted or even convicted, etc.

Suicide is one thing, but I would have to take issue with all of the mischief that the cover-up has created. It is a serious problem.

Especially if it is linked to Death Benefits. No prosecution, but that is a fraud, and IMO anyone who may have tried to skew the details to get a homicide ruling, has abetted the fraud. We shall see.....JMO JMO JMO

Police from Fox Lake suffer PTSD?
I don't doubt inner city police have good reasons to develop ptsd.
But, Fox Lake LE, not as likely imo.

ABC is covering Joe Battaglia's court appearance.
His attorney claims he has no knowledge of or direct connection to the investigation. JB was just trying to provoke (my word) more information about the case (typical lawyer comment).

Filenko was in court today but didn't talk to reporters.
Investigators he leads do not have results from ballistics, gun shot residue, or "significant dna" recovered from the scene of CJG's death.
All theories being discussed are still open.

Judge refused a bond reduction for JB.

Yeah that's just an average- I'm sure much lower or non-existent in instances of a more cushy detail.

Thanks for the court update- so he has not bailed out yet... Why are they holding him?

I also have to think that, were it a suicide, death benefits would have been the main (if not only) motivation, though (just speaking hypothetically here) one might have thought that death in the line of duty would seem more honorable, if not outright heroic, so one's legacy could have also been a consideration.

It says Battaglia has no history of mental illness and no criminal history. He's divorced and supports three teenage children on his $3,100-a-month police pension. This makes no sense to risk loosing everything, unless he has info, or he is mentally ill even though there is no history of it.

I don't think he's mentally ill, but I do think he was drunk and angry!

Yes exactly- I totally agree with you here - if there were people involved in this cover up then they absolutely should see maximum penalty, dismissal from department, up to and including restitution, jail , etc.

The cost of everything- the manhunt, additional personnel, overtime pay, and money paid out based on fraudulent information.- I can only imagine what the dollar amount is at this point. Ugh.

I know you didn't ask me, but I think it was suicide, and there are others here that do too.

Thanks for your input anyway though. I guess it's just hard for me to to grasp- that other officers may have put so much on the line if they helped cover up a suicide all in the name of getting more money for someone else's family.

And if that is what actually happened here I may pass out from shock at how unbelievably stupid people can be- especially those we place so much trust in to keep our communities safe.

I haven't discounted the possibility that he may have had a medical diagnosis of lung cancer which was discussed a few days ago. In his mind, if this was a suicide, he was taking care of his financial obligations to his family, and preserving his legacy of heroism. I understand that. But if any of that is true, it was certainly a big risk that he wouldn't be found out. Now it looks like he may have caused more pain for everyone, which I really don't believe was his intention. http://abc7chicago.com/news/3-fox-lake-suspects-now-persons-of-interest/984475/

Nothing really new. Reporting that lab is slow despite asking for tests to be expedited and that 3 suspects downgraded to POI's and defines differences between the terms 'suspect' and 'POI'...

The fact about the suspects, who were cleared several days ago but are now back to being POI's, has me really scratching my head.

I sure hope the case doesn't take a turn for the worse ending up hurting even more people.
For some reason, the Sandusky case came to mind when Behan spoke at the funeral service.
Something like this sure would put a different spin on why there is so much mystery surrounding the case.
Bad police work alone isn't making sense to me.

We need to know more about the internal problems with the police department and if insiders didn't want CJG around anymore.
This theory causes my other nagging, dark thoughts.

This case is just awful no matter whether it was suicide or murder. I wish for his families sake there was no chance of this being a suicide. To me everything we've heard so far leads to suicide though, and I'll bet there's more than a few LE privately and maybe not so privately thinking the same thing. <Sigh>

I have been lurking as well and am curious about what appears to be a cabin located just over 100 yds almost straight south of the locked gate on Honing. I haven't seen it mentioned. I have attached 2 jpg's from GE from 4/2/13 that show it. Has this been discussed or identified previously?

I'm not sure that other officers did cover up....but all had to know what script the powers that be want everyone to follow. We are not privy to private conversations of his colleagues. I suspect that they have discussed this and it's ramifications quite a bit. JMO

Yep you're probably right. I have an inherent tendency to view law enforcement officers and the profession as a whole as all goodness and light (sans a couple rotten eggs, but mostly good and with the purest intentions to serve the commnity) because of my husband being one himself.

So it's not only hits close to home for me- but it's so frustrating, sad, scary, and a really dark aspect of the toll working in this profession can take on someone- and what lengths people will go to as a result of fallout.

And yet another reason why if this was suicide it's so infuriating. Did this hypothetical discussion of ramifications include the realization of how dangerous it already is for law enforcement officers lately with the current events, etc. and how much worse it could make things for officers if the truth came out? Because that is definitely a reality - it just would create even more of an anti police sentiment unfortunately :(
