He hasn't turned in any paperwork not that retirement takes more than five minutes but I dont think anyone else thought he was on his last few days so his days would have been no different on the job.
But he died a day before retirement. The last day he would have to turn in all his equipment, paperwork, etc. He might not even be on patrol? If he did plan on committing suicide after meeting with the mayor, the next day was likely his only chance.

He didn't die a day before retirement. See my previous post on the last page with comments from both the mayor and the former police chief regarding Joe's plans for retirement.

Yeah or your front yard like the chief would do at our home, (years ago) he would drink scotch & milk, no lie. Yeah the chief of police. jmo idk

Right. No paper trail. JMO My PERSONAL opinion is that the Mayor, in his grief, relayed the fact of a private conversation. JMO JMO JMO

He took the squad car home on the 31 august. Why? Where was his car? If he was not supposed to work on the1 Sept. It is weird that he took the squad car home. NOT, if he was supposed to work on the1st of Sept. He probably took his squad car home often, so that isn't strange, but what IS strange is why he did THAT night. JMO

JFox Lake Mayor Donny Schmit said Gliniewicz had planned to retire at the end of the year but pushed it up to the end of September. The pair met Monday for 90 minutes to discuss Gliniewicz's retirement. Schmit said Gliniewicz wanted to make sure the police department's Explorer Post 300 would continue after he left the job. The Explorer Post was something the officer had built for 30 years, and he didn't want to see it end, Schmit said.

The Fish Rots From The Head

I see no reason to have blind faith in Mayor Donny Schmit's account of the meeting or who he says requested it.

Or, even what they discussed. JMO

He was ELIGIBLE to retire the day BEFORE. That does not mean he intended to retire the day before. And he was still not retired the following day as he still was expected at work.
He might have decided to stay for months or years more.

He could have committed suicide anytime he wanted but to do it while on duty he would need to do it before retirement. But like I said he could have stayed for months or years longer.

I think that you are correct. If he had had an official retirement date ON PAPER, there would have been a YOOOOOOGE celebration and send-off, after 30 years of honorable service. So, he must have intended to work the next day, and it must have been expected that he would. JMO OK. disregard the squad car question..........maybe. JMO

True, but reportedly they were very good friends. JMO

Got to thinking with the good friends comment and stinking fish head comment that maybe Joe gave the mayor some sort of message or inside info that the mayor is keeping to himself. he sure was quick to tell us that meeting took place but only that Joe was concerned about the program when he was gone. Nothing else about that 90 minutes. Not even talking about high school football or anything???

It's like he threw us a bone to keep us quiet when he didn't have to mention it at all.

The kids in the Explorer program would have known ahead of time he was leaving as well if had an official retirement date.

Or maybe the mayor feels guilty about something he told Joe in meeting????

Yeah. I feel badly for the kids............JMO His death must have been terribly traumatic for them, and then, to not even be able to meet in their usual place? I really do hope that the program continues, and that someone realizes what a loss this is for them. JMO

I wonder what they think about all this talk that he was retiring soon when they obviously hadn't been informed he was planning to step down soon.

You would think he would have given them a heads up. Especially before the new school session started.

His entire retirement schedule just seems so all over the map.

Donny may have told his friend straight up what the deal was as far as he knew, with the PD investigations......... THIS IS SIMPLY A GUESS> Not to be confused with purporting a fact. JMO

I wonder where they ended up meeting? I am still trying to figure that out since I can't see how the Lions Club played into it. Maybe they have been told he went to the club house before his death and aren't sure what the circumstances were so to be safe they are moving kids somewhere else?

Our maybe they are just changing the locks to be more secure after this happened.

good point. So maybe he thinks something he said tipped him off?

He may have, and assured them that all is well. I do not doubt his dedication to the program, but if he was ideating suicide the last time he spoke to them, he MAY have tried to explain how things change, but all is the same. I hope he did, anyway. JMO

Aside from the talk with the mayor we just don't have much indication he was doing much planning in the way of retirement. His wife doesn't say anything different was planned. It is starting to look to me like he was putting off thinking about it it at all.

BBM

I understand your questions and I can only offer guesses about his possible motivations. I have to go out for a bit so maybe we can pick that part up later.

Before I go, though - I do have to say that I can't see how he thought he could get away with a faked KIA in the long run. He had to know there would be a much more intense investigation into an officer Killed In Action than there would be for a simple police action shooting.

I think that he had many issues converging in his life and was considering suicide that morning for the first time. Nobody saw the signs because he probably never seriously considered it in the past. That could be the reason he was on scene for 20 minutes prior to the shooting. It could also explain the lack of an elaborately staged incident/scene. The fact that he mentioned the 3 males that he likely saw walking along the road, (who were later cleared of any involvement) tells me that he did not have any plan thought out prior to leaving for work that morning. Once he made up his mind that he was going to commit suicide, he may have quickly come up with the idea to try to disguise the suicide for the sake of his family.

Since it it has been over a month and LE still hasn't been able to declare this a suicide or homocide, it seems that his actions, if this was a suicide, have introduced a significant amount of confusion and difficulty for investigators.

They should have some prints lifted from the last person to touch that gun. Even smeared they can usually tell which finger held the trigger. Palm prints will show the angle held.
I wonder if he shot the final shot with his left hand since it was to the upper left chest.
I wouldn't think he would have marks from the gun unless the slide action caught his hand in some way.

In addition to prints, there should be skin cells and dna from any perspiration on the gun as well.
