Authorities also revealed there almost was another victim, but that person might not have showed up.

ndicted on 6 counts of murder each -- how do you get 12 charges of murder with deceased person-- by stabs???

Lathem lured Cornell-Duranleau to his River North apartment, where video showed them going into the building together, Toller said. After Cornell-Duranleau went to sleep, Lathem sent a text message to Warren telling him it was time to kill Cornell-Duranleau and that Warren should come over, according to Toller.

Warren went to the apartment and, after Lathem ensured Cornell-Duranleau was sleeping, Lathem joined Warren in a bathroom and they removed a new knife from its packaging, Toller said. Lathem asked Warren to record the slaying on a cellphone.

Cornell-Duranleau woke up, Toller said, and started screaming and fighting back. Lathem asked Warren for help and Warren put his hand over Cornell-Duranleau's mouth. The man bit Warren, Toller said.
Warren then hit Cornell-Duranleau with a "heavy metal lamp,"

Warren is accused of retrieving two knives from the kitchen and bringing them into the bedroom.

had both cut themselves during the attack.
The two tried to clean the apartment before setting off

used a rented car to travel — when in the timeline?

Police found Cornell-Duranleau dead about 8:30 p.m., laying in his underwear on the floor.

The death wasn't an accident, Toller said, according to prosecutors, and he told his family Cornell-Duranleau had trusted him and felt safe with him and he "betrayed" that.
Cornell-Duranleau had "no idea" what was coming as he slept,

This is beyond horrifying. Too bad they did not commit suicide.

But the fact is that there is ZERO evidence of sexual assault or sex between the killers following the murder.

Literally nothing sexual involved.

Just because there wasn't an actual sexual assault, doesn't mean violence isn't sexually motivated. If these two suspect were into S&M, then they presumably would get their kicks out of violence. From what is being reported, killing someone was a part of their sexual fantasy.

Sexual fantasy involves some sort of sexual component. Based on what is known as of now you have two people with a mutual murder fantasy who happened to meet in a dating forum.

Does the other planned victim even know at this piont that he or she was the target and came within minutes/hours of being killed?

Ex-Northwestern University professor, Oxford employee face hearing in Chicago stabbing

An ex-Northwestern University professor and an Oxford University employee are expected to enter not guilty pleas in the July stabbing death of a hairstylist in Chicago.

Lathem and Warren are charged with first-degree murder in the death of 26-year-old Trenton James Cornell-Duranleau.

Oxford University worker and US professor plead not guilty to murder

A former Northwestern University professor and an Oxford University employee have pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges in the stabbing death of the professor’s boyfriend.

Wyndham Lathem, 46, and Andrew Warren, 56, stood quietly in separate Chicago court hearings on Thursday as their attorneys entered pleas on their behalf. Both men spoke little during the hearings, only briefly answering when Cook county judge Ursula Walowski asked if they understood the charges.

Warren, a resident of Faringdon, Oxfordshire, has been suspended from his job as a senior treasury assistant at Somerville College, Oxford. Lathem, a microbiologist, was fired from his job at Northwestern University on 4 August.

A British man accused of butchering a Chicago hairstylist as part of a twisted sexual fantasy with a Northwestern University professor has accepted a plea deal and will testify against his co-defendant in exchange for a 45-year prison sentence, prosecutors said.

Andrew Warren, a onetime Oxford University financial officer, was set to go on trial next week alongside his co-defendant — former Northwestern microbiology professor Wyndham Lathem — in the July 2017 stabbing death of Lathem’s boyfriend, 26-year-old Trenton James Cornell-Duranleau.

But Warren, 58, agreed Monday to plead guilty in the horrific slaying of Lathem’s boyfriend, who was nearly decapitated and found stabbed 70 times at the professor’s apartment in Chicago.

Warren also agreed to testify against Lathem, who has pleaded not guilty in the slaying. His trial date has not yet been set.

The court documents allege that Warren and Mr Lathem began communicating online in the month before the murder, after which Warren flew to the United States to meet Mr Lathem.

Around three days later, in the early hours of 27 July 2017, Warren came to Mr Lathem's apartment in Chicago. The pair went into the bathroom where Mr Lathem described to Warren his plan to murder Mr Cornell.

Warren then agreed to video the attack, assistant state attorney Craig Engebretson told a US court on Monday.

The state alleges the pair went into the bedroom where the victim was sleeping. Mr Lathem began to stab him in the face, while Warren allegedly covered the victim's mouth, hit him with a lamp and stabbed him in the chest.

I really never understood why this murder happened. Does anyone have any insights? It seems so outlandish, and the perp(s) didn't have a history or trail of past clues where you'd guess something like this might happen. I don't get it.

Had he maybe murdered before, and no one put the pieces together? Were there prior crimes? I can kinda see the Brit going along with it, but the prof just....I can't figure it out.

So, I had to satisfy my lack-of-street-smarts mind and look up murder and sexual fantasy.

I can share these links:

Lust murder - Wikipedia

I'm still reading the latter....

But all this begs the question...This is a serial murder type thing. Has Lathem killed before? Are there more murders in his orbit that are still unsolved?
I think there's a bit of a new phenomenon I've noticed, of 'respectable' middle aged men in their 40's, becoming sexual serial killers or being caught after their first sexual serial-type murder.

I'm thinking of Col. Russell Williams in Canada (started by stealing young womens underwear in his mid 40's), Rocket Peter Madsen in Denmark (murdered and dismembered a young woman when he was age 47), Bruce McArthur, who began murdering men during sex in his mid-50's, tho he'd been arrested after a similar assault 10 years earlier.

Criminal profilers are shaking their heads over these cases, since the typical serial killer starts out young.

It doesn't seem impossible to me, anymore, that a man who held this type of violent secret fantasies, and who was able to bury them in his youth, might begin to explore them after he'd followed a straight path. Possibly, the internet encourages that. Or some kind of 'mid-life crisis', and a desire to take risks, who knows. ETA, or maybe the fantasies only emerge in midlife, and some have suggested pharmaceuticals might trigger some cases.
