Waller has a pair of designer jeans— Rock Revival brand— that Doty was wearing when he was arrested. A witness said she recalled seeing Doty wearing similar jeans. She also so Doty take Tyshawn's basketball and lead the boy toward the alley where he was shot.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 13h13 hours ago
Doty's DNA was found on Tyshawn's ball, raising the very topic that Doty's lawyers complained about, but seems to be phrasing the "probablistic" nature of the evidence more explicitly than during Morgan's closing.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 13h13 hours ago
Now playing tape of Doty talking about dribbling the ball after taking it from Tyshawn. Again, the audio is unintelligible to me over the courtroom loudspeaker, but jurors will have a transcript and the option of playing the tape over and over.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 13h13 hours ago
Waller has moved on to GPS data from the black Ford Edge used as the getaway car, posting a map on the screen showing the car circling the area around the park the day of the shooting, then heading to co-defendant Corey Morgan's house.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 13h13 hours ago
The car also had traces of Doty's DNA on the driver's side door, steering wheel and the gear shift, Waller said. The car appeared to have been wiped down, but Doty must've driven the car to where it was dumped in a Dolton neighborhood— but didn't wipe it down before he got out

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 13h13 hours ago
"Fortunately, we are not dealing with a criminal mastermind here," Waller adds. His colleague, Craig Engebretsen, made a similar joke in Morgan's closing.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 13h13 hours ago
Waller plays recording of Doty talking to the informant about killing Tyshawn, going into detail about walking the boy back to the alley, shooting him— and providing sound effects:
"BOP BOP BOP BOP BOP BOP, I'm laughing."

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 13h13 hours ago
Waller's next clip is Doty rapping about the killing. I can't make out the lyrics.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 13h13 hours ago
Waller borrows his closing line from from Engebretsen's closing for the Morgan jury: "There cant be a happy ending in this case, but there can be a just one." Overall, this was an abridged version of Morgan's closing. Then again, Morgan not on tape bragging about the case.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 13h13 hours ago
Morgan's lawyer, Danita Ivory, steps up. "What do you say to a jury that has just sat thru three weeks of trial about the murder of a 9-year-old child? What do you say to a jury that may find it difficult to look over at the defense table and look at Mr. Doty."

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 13h13 hours ago
"Justice does not mean convicting the wrong person," Ivory says. "Justice does not mean convicting someone because they're 21 years old an find self in Cook County Jail, 5-9 tall and 150 pounds, and finds oneself surrounded by people the likes of Demetrius Murray."

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 13h13 hours ago
Murray was a high-ranking Gangster Disciple had been convicted of shooting someone— and stands 6-5, about 300 lbs. Recently convicted for shooting someone, Murray agreed to carry a USB drive-shaped recording device to tape conversations with Doty. He got a 10-year sentence.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 13h13 hours ago
Ivory tackles testimony from witness who ID'd all three defendants as being in the park. Said he saw Corey Morgan on the basketball court, and noticed he had a gun. "The Morgan Bros. The ones with all the motive in the world. He’s on the basketball court and he’s got that gun."

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 12h12 hours ago
Ivory on to DNA evidence. Doty's DNA was found— after the State Police used a new software package they'd never used before— on the basketball found near Tyshawn's body and in the getaway car.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 12h12 hours ago
"Illinois state police can’t date DNA. They can’t say when it got there, they can’t say how it got there." Ivory notes that other people's DNA also was identified in the car, but they weren't investigated seriously.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 12h12 hours ago
Ivory says Doty was trying to impress informant Demetrius Murray, hoping to get protection from the much larger, higher ranking inmate. But, she points out, Doty's version of events was consistent with information that had been in the news, and messed up details.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 12h12 hours ago
Doty claimed that the motive for the shooting was the killing of "his brother," Tracey Morgan and his mother. But Doty is not actually Morgan's brother. Doty also said he fired a dozen shots; 7 shell casings were found at the scene.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 12h12 hours ago
Ivory points out that one conversation with Murray started with Murray telling Doty that there were members of Tyshawn's father's gang in the jail, and that they were interested in Doty. "Mr. Doty did what he thought he had to do to survive, and that’s to make up a lie."

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 12h12 hours ago
The murder weapon turned up 18 months after Tyshawn was killed. Police rolled up on a vacant lot where 20-50 people were filming a rap video. The group scattered, and police found five guns on the lot, including the .40-caliber that killed Tyshawn.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 12h12 hours ago
Two people were stopped, but defense lawyers didn't know anything about it, because prosecutors didn't find reports that referenced the stop until midway through the trial, Ivory points out.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 12h12 hours ago
She's using the fact that cops made no attempt to contact these guys, even after they found out they'd been at or near the scene when the gun was found.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 12h12 hours ago
Doty's lawyer is now making the case against Corey Morgan, who she's holding out as the more likely suspect in Tyshawn's murder: all the data showing Morgan's phone was near the park, GPS showing the getaway car going to and from his house.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 12h12 hours ago
I wonder if the Morgan jury will reach a verdict before we get to the end of the Doty closing

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 12h12 hours ago
Doty's lawyer has had a picture of Corey Morgan on the courtroom monitor behind her for the last 15 minutes.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 12h12 hours ago
Ivory notes two images likely burned in jurors' brains: Tyshawn smiling in his school uniform and backpack, and lying on a slab at the morgue. "I’m not saying ignore those pics you saw, not saying put Tyshawn out of your mind. I am asking you to think critically about this case

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 12h12 hours ago
We're on a 10-minute break while we get ready for the state's rebuttal.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 12h12 hours ago
We're back. ASA Tom Darman will handle the rebuttal for the state.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 11h11 hours ago

Darman tells jurors they've been presented with a "mosaic" of evidence, "that paints a picture of the criminal responsibility" of Doty, Morgan and Edwards, and defends the investigation. "We don't have tunnel vision... That’s not what we do."

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 11h11 hours ago
He's leading with the testimony of Jaylen Anderson, who identified all three defendants as being in the park— though Darman said he didn't ask him to ID him in court. "He was scared up on that witness stand. And no... I didn’t ask him to look the child killer in the eye."

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 11h11 hours ago
Darman talks about Demetrius Murray, the hulking gang leader who recorded the much smaller Doty bragging about the killling: 'I'm no asking you to take him home for Thanksgiving... I'm asking you to push play" on the tapes.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 11h11 hours ago
Doty's rap about killing Tyshawn misstated the number of shots fired at the fourth-grader (16 instead of 7) because of "meter and timing." "It's not meant to be God’s honest truth. It's meant to be his celebration of killing Tyshawn Lee."

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 11h11 hours ago
On the subject of the DNA software used to ID Doty's DNA on the basketball, which was used for the first time by the State Police lab for the first time in this case, Darman points out the software was already in use by the FBI and US Army.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 11h11 hours ago
The black Ford Edge, which turned out to be a gold mine for the investigation, was a lucky get, Darman said. Police interviewed his brother, found out he'd called police to have his brother ticketed for blocking their driveway. That gave them a plate number.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 11h11 hours ago
"Dwright Doty took Tyshawn Lee's baskeball and lured that 9 y/o into that alley. He kidnapped him, by deceit. He fired shot after shot after shot... Tyshawn saw his end coming He saw the barrel of the gun and that guy," Darman said, pointing to Doty.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 11h11 hours ago
Darman winds up, projecting a few quotes transcribed from Doty's jailhouse recordings:

"I’m lookin' at him, we’re walking. He hit the ground (laughs) BOP BOP BOP... I'm laughing."

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 11h11 hours ago
Another quote from the recordings, on why Doty killed Tyshawn: "So they"— Tyshawn's family— "feeling the pain I feel when they shot mom and killed my brother."

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 11h11 hours ago
Darman wraps up: "(Doty) cannot escape what he did. For the execution of Tyshawn Lee Doty is as guilty as they come... for executing a 9-year-old child, he is as responsible as they come." Rebuttal is done. Judge Wilson reading instructions to the jury.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 10h10 hours ago
We have two questions from the Morgan jury, which began deliberating around 1 p.m. Nothing substantial: They want help opening some computer files from the evidence; they need a smoke break; they want copies of a map timestamped with some of the GPS location data.

Breaking: Jurors have reached a verdict in trial of Dwright Boone-Doty, alleged gunman in the murder of Tyshawn Lee

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 8h8 hours ago
Doty's jury went out at about 6 p.m., so we're talking about a little more than two hours of deliberations before reaching a verdict.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 8h8 hours ago
Co-defendant Corey Morgan's jury went out at about 2 p.m. and has sent out a couple of questions for the judge.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 8h8 hours ago
Boone-Doty faced a lot of damning evidence: his DNA was found on a basketball that lay just a few feet from Tyshawn Lee's body, and in the SUV used as the getaway vehicle. Perhaps worse still for Doty, a jailhouse informant secretly recorded him bragging about the murder.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 8h8 hours ago
Doty is bobbing softly in his seat beside his attorneys as he waits for the jury to return to the courtroom to read off the verdict. For several weeks before the trial, Doty had insisted he wanted to represent himself.

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 8h8 hours ago
Judge Wilson has called the case. Jury went out at 5:15 and had reached a verdict by 8:17.

Jury finds one of two men accused in the killing of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee guilty of murder (with clip)

October 4, 2019

"Chicago (CNN)One of two reputed gang members accused of luring 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee into a Chicago alley to kill him as revenge in a dispute between two gangs has been found guilty of murder by a Cook County jury.

Dwright Doty, 22, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the 2015 shooting that left Tyshawn's small body crumpled on the concrete in the alley, a gunshot wound to his head.

"Even at a time when we've become nearly numb to headlines about violence, this case shook us to our core," said Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx in a statement after the verdict.

"While we await the second verdict, we are pleased with the first outcome of this case," she said. "We hope that this verdict brings some measure of closure and peace for the family of Tyshawn Lee, whom we will never forget."

The other man, Corey Morgan, was tried in the same courtroom but before a separate jury. That panel was still deliberating when Doty was convicted...."

Gunman Convicted In Murder Of Tyshawn Lee, 9

The jury in the Corey Morgan case resumed their deliberations this morning at about 9:40 a.m. Morgan was the alleged "driving force" behind the murder of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee in 2015.

Megan Crepeau‏Verified account @crepeau 3h3 hours ago
Jurors are set to resume deliberations this morning in the case of Corey Morgan, who is accused of orchestrating the revenge killing of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee. They went for more than six hours yesterday without returning a verdict, and were sequestered overnight. Stay tuned...

Megan Crepeau‏Verified account @crepeau 3h3 hours ago
Jurors are back at the courthouse and have been instructed to resume deliberations.

Matt Masterson‏ @ByMattMasterson 3h3 hours ago
During closing arguments yesterday, both prosecutors and defense attorneys played for jurors video clips of witnesses ID'ing Morgan and convicted gunman Dwright Boone-Doty.
Those clips were broadcast as part of extended media coverage of the case.

Matt Masterson‏ @ByMattMasterson 3h3 hours ago
Now Judge Thaddeus Wilson is ordering those specific clips be destroyed following "possible death threats" that have apparently been made against witnesses in the cases.

Megan Crepeau‏Verified account @crepeau 1h1 hour ago
The Morgan jury has sent up a question. At this point they've been deliberating for more than eight hours in total.

Megan Crepeau‏Verified account @crepeau 50m50 minutes ago
Jurors want to know whether two special allegations in the charges -- being armed with a firearm and killing a person under the age of 12 -- apply just to Morgan or also to a person for whom he is legally responsible.

Megan Crepeau‏Verified account @crepeau 48m48 minutes ago
Morgan is not alleged to have fired the bullets in this case - he is charged under a theory of legal accountability. I think you can guess how prosecutors and defense each want the judge to answer the jurors' question.

Megan Crepeau‏Verified account @crepeau 45m45 minutes ago
Jurors likely don't get to those matters until they've decided on the underlying question of whether he's guilty of first-degree murder. So perhaaaaaps a verdict is close.

Megan Crepeau‏Verified account @crepeau 35m35 minutes ago
Another question came in a minute ago: "Can we have a dictionary?" "The obvious answer to that is no," Judge Wilson says.

Megan Crepeau‏Verified account @crepeau 34m34 minutes ago
Defense arguing that since prosecution defined the word "abet" in closings, it would be fair to give them a dictionary. Judge is adamant that they are no way, no how, getting anywhere near a dictionary.

BREAKING - jurors have reached a verdict in Corey Morgan’s case.

Matt Masterson‏ @ByMattMasterson 24m24 minutes ago

Decision comes after about 9.5 hours of deliberations over two days.

Morgan didn't shoot 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee himself, but prosecutors alleged he targeted the boy as revenge for a previous gang-related shooting that left Morgan's brother dead and mother wounded.

Megan Crepeau‏Verified account @crepeau 19m19 minutes ago
By my count, this verdict came after about 10 hours of deliberations. Could be a while until it's read, but stand by ...

Matt Masterson‏ @ByMattMasterson 7m7 minutes ago
Court's back in session now. Just waiting on the jury to enter

No reaction from Corey Morgan, who is seated beside his lawyers. None of Tyshawn's relatives are in the courtroom today— they left the building in tears last night after the guilty verdict against gunman Dwright Boone-Doty

Andy Grimm‏Verified account @agrimm34 3m3 minutes ago
Otherwise, the courtroom gallery is less than half-full, including a small group on some sort of field trip and a collection of staffers from the State's Attorney's Office.

Matt Masterson‏ @ByMattMasterson 3m3 minutes ago
Jury deliberations began Thursday at 1:52 p.m. and went until 8:14 p.m. They resumed today at 9:40 a.m. and went until a verdict was reached at 1:07 p.m.

Matt Masterson‏ @ByMattMasterson 1m1 minute ago
No reaction from Morgan here in court. Lee's family is not present in the courtroom today

Megan Crepeau‏Verified account @crepeau 4m4 minutes ago
With these verdicts, all three co-defendants have been convicted in Tyshawn's murder. Corey Morgan and Dwright Doty were found guilty by juries; Kevin Edwards pleaded guilty right before trial.

Megan Crepeau‏Verified account @crepeau 2m2 minutes ago
Morgan faces a sentence of up to 100 years in prison.

Both Corey Morgan and Dwright Boone-Doty are due back in court for a status hearing Oct. 28.

Second man found guilty in the murder of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee in Chicago

Oct. 4, 2019

"CHICAGO — A second man was found guilty Friday in the killing of Tyshawn Lee, a 9-year-old boy who was executed in a 2015 Chicago gang hit that shocked the nation for its brutality.

Jurors found Corey Morgan, 31, guilty of murder in the first degree....

While Boone-Doty's jury took just over two hours to reach a verdict, Morgan's jury deliberated for nearly 10 hours and was sequestered overnight.

Morgan's jury appeared to have several questions throughout its deliberation process.

The jury seemed unsure of whether it could find Morgan legally responsible for murder with possession of a firearm, as it was Boone-Doty, not Morgan, who allegedly shot Tyshawn. The judge clarified language for the jury, saying that the term “defendant” means the defendant or one for whose conduct he is legally responsible...."

Tyshawn Lee murder trial: Chicago jury finds Corey Morgan guilty

I'm so happy they were both found guilty.

Rest in peace beautiful Tyshawn.

Thank you @YESorNO for bringing all of the tweets over to this thread. I sincerely appreciate it!

A Cook County judge on Wednesday found Tyshawn Lee's father, Pierre Stokes, guilty of gun possession and aggravated battery. The charges stemmed from a 2014 argument in which witnesses said Stokes flashed a gun at a woman. At the time, the 29-year-old Stokes was barred from owning a firearm because of a robbery conviction.
Father of 9-year-old murder victim guilty of weapons charges

Tyshawn Lee, 9, was shot and killed Nov. 2, 2015, near 80th Place and Damen Avenue in Chicago's Gres

Hours after chilling details of the slaying of his 9-year-old son were revealed in court, Pierre Stokes encountered the girlfriend of one of his son’s killers, prosecutors alleged Wednesday, then looked straight at her, threatened her and fired six shots.

Stokes, 33, is accused of shooting and injuring the woman and her two adult nephews in March of 2016 to avenge the brutal killing of his son, Tyshawn Lee, that November. He began standing trial last week on charges of attempted murder and other felonies.

A jury began deliberating Wednesday afternoon after hearing more than a week of testimony in the case.
